Abstract

Abstract

The Damarwulan–Minakjinggo story is part of the traditional Langendriyan art heritage and developed in Banyuwangi. This story depicts the conflict between Damarwulan and Minakjinggo. Historically, this story was used by the Mataram Sultanate to build political legitimacy by depicting Minakjinggo as rebels, while the Dutch adapted the narrative to stigmatize the Blambangan community. This study aims to examine the origins, transformations, and impacts of this performance in a political and cultural context, using historical methods with a deconstruction approach from Derrida. The discussion highlights how this story was transformed into a tool for political legitimacy, as well as how the Banyuwangi community reconstructed the story to strengthen local identity. The implications of this study indicate that the transformation of the Damarwulan-Minakjinggo story strengthens local identity and makes art a means of resistance to dominant narratives. In conclusion, this story reflects how art and historical narratives can adapt to social and political changes, and enrich understanding of cultural identity that is relevant to modern values.

Abstract

This research is entitled Intellectual Propaganda of the Indische Partij: Media and Education Strategies in Raising National Consciousness (1912-1925). Amidst colonial domination, Indische Partij faced significant challenges in fostering unity among a society fragmented by ethnic differences, social classes, and colonial political influences. This study aims to analyze Indische Partij strategies in utilizing media and education as propaganda tools to overcome these challenges and drive national consciousness. The historical method, which includes heuristics, criticism, interpretation, and historiography, was employed in the preparation of this article. Additionally, qualitative analysis and a historical approach were applied through an examination of archival documents, publications, and educational texts designed by Indische Partij . The findings reveal that media played a crucial role in widely and rapidly disseminating ideas of unity and independence, particularly through provocative articles criticizing colonial policies. On the other hand, education was used as a long-term strategy to shape national character by instilling values of justice, equality, and unity among the younger generation. These findings demonstrate that the combination of media and education as propaganda tools successfully influenced public discourse and laid the initial foundation for national awareness. Indische Partij strategies not only addressed the colonial challenges of their time but also served as an inspiration for subsequent nationalist movements in the struggle for Indonesia's independence.

Abstract

Abstract

History education has tended to focus on the transmission of a single narrative that is factual and chronological in nature, thus ignoring the critical and constructive dimensions of the historical thought process. This article proposes a mini-historiography approach as an innovative learning strategy that encourages students to not just memorize events, but to actively construct historical narratives based on data, sources, and interpretations. Through the practice of mini historiography, students are invited to trace traces of local history, conduct field observations, interviews, and document analysis, which are then constructed in the form of historical writings or presentations. This approach not only improves critical thinking skills, historical literacy, and empathy, but also provides space for students to play the role of knowledge producers, not just consumers. This study uses a qualitative study method with classroom observation and analysis of student documents in three high schools in South Sumatra. The results show that mini historiography is able to arouse students' enthusiasm, enrich their understanding of the local historical context, and strengthen cultural identity. In addition, this approach challenges the dominance of large national narratives that often marginalize community history. By involving students as young historians, history education becomes more democratic, contextual, and meaningful. This article recommends the integration of mini-historiography into the history curriculum as a strategic step in building a generation that is historically literate and reflective of the past.
