Abstract

Student politics play a significant role in shaping democratic values, leadership skills, and awareness among students. But it is being tainted, especially in university campus, by violence, party interests, and personal gains. Student politics has both negative and positive impacts. Based on primary data which have been collected from 100 respondents, this study aims to assess the role of student politics in Bangladesh from July, 2024 to the present, knowing the opinions of people about student politics, evaluating the impacts of student politics on academic activities and governance, and identifying the positive and negative aspects of student political involvement. A purposive sampling method was applied, focusing on students, faculty, and student leaders. Findings reveal a dual nature of student politics: while it fosters political awareness and leadership, it also contributes to academic disruptions, administrative conflicts, and campus violence. The research concludes by offering practical reform recommendations to ensure that student politics contributes positively to democracy and institutional integrity, emphasizing the urgent need for democratization, transparency, and accountability in student political practices.

Abstract

Social intercourse between European Christians and the Tamils was not easy yet, the converts dared to become Christians and associate themselves with the "foreigners." They have applied the passive approach of dialogue with other religious people regarding their beliefs and faith. Ziegenbalg corresponded with several scholars and practitioners of Tamil bhakti religions. Ziegenbalg and his successors gave them a Tamil version of the Bible, catechisms, theologies, songs, and other religious practices. The cultural adaptations helped Indian Christians establish themselves as an alternate community that is fully functional even now.

Abstract

The port of Alappuzha is a historic port that epitomizes Kerala's maritime legacy and economic development. The port, itself was planned and designed, drawing the attention in the late 18th century, when the Lord Raja Kesavadas was the able administrator, and got developed as the trade and finance centre for Travancore Kingdom. Thanks to a web of canals connecting the Vembanad Lake and the Arabian Sea, Alappuzha became an export hub for coir and coir products, pepper, ginger, timber and other commodities linked to the hinterland as well as global markets. This paper investigates the varied significance of Alappuzha Port in the economic, political and diplomatic history of Travancore, focusing specifically on the leading role played by the port in the development of the coir industry, one of the still vibrant pillars of Kerala economic identity. Tracing the twin narratives of a port flourishing due to a geographic advantage, administrative forethought and an open trade policy and subsequently declining with the emergence of Cochin Port, the breakup of coir production, and entry of modern transport networks, the paper compares and contrasts a range of factors responsible both for the success and the failure of Quilon. Based on historical records, archaeological findings, and heritage analysis, the study shows how the architectural and cultural remains of the port are being restored and reinterpreted through modern heritage practices. In Conclusion, the thesis stresses that Alappuzha is not just a historical marker in the maritime history of the state but also a living monument of Kerala’s industrial memory and argues for its preservation as a National Heritage Landscape

Abstract

This research article explores the intricate relationship between caste hierarchy, customary practices, and mechanisms of social control in rural Bengal during the colonial period. While colonial historiography has traditionally emphasized political authority, economic exploitation, and administrative transformation, the everyday social processes through which power was exercised at the village level have often remained underexamined. This study argues that caste and custom were not merely survivals of a pre-colonial social order but dynamic institutions that actively structured rural life and mediated colonial authority. Through the regulation of labor, gender relations, ritual practices, and access to resources, caste-based norms and customary rules functioned as effective instruments of social discipline. Colonial administrators, far from dismantling these indigenous institutions, selectively recognized and codified them to facilitate governance with minimal coercion. Drawing upon colonial census reports, district gazetteers, ethnographic writings, and modern historical scholarship, this article examines how caste and custom reinforced social hierarchy while simultaneously becoming sites of negotiation and resistance. By foregrounding social control as a key analytical category, the study contributes to a deeper understanding of the social history of colonial Bengal and highlights the complex interaction between indigenous society and colonial power.

Abstract

This book written by a former Japanese ambassador, Takeo lugchi, represents one of the first sustained academic efforts to re-examine the attack on Pearl Harbor through legal evidence and diplomatic records from Japanese perspective. Lguchi publication of the book aims at identification of the false ideas that has distorted historical facts. Therefore, the published work is driven by a stated commitment to correcting what he perceives as distortions in the historical records.  The author addresses the long-standing question of why Japan attacked the U.S. naval fleet at Pearl Harbour without declaring a formal war and how this action was connected to the simultaneous Japanese landing on the same day at Kota Bharu against British forces. Lguchi investigates whether the failure lay with the Japanese Navy, which preferred a surprise attack to ensure success. Given that the author’s father served as a subordinate official in the Japanese embassy, Iguchi appears inclined to defend the embassy’s role while placing primary responsibility on the military and the Foreign Ministry.

Abstract

Kamal Khan Dam is one of the most important water management projects in Afghanistan, located on the Helmand River in Nimroz Province, about 95 kilometers from Zaranj city in Chahar Burjak District. The construction of this dam has long been an aspiration of the Afghan people, particularly the residents of Nimroz, and it was officially inaugurated in 2021. This study examines the importance of Kamal Khan Dam and the influence of the Helmand River on political relations between Afghanistan and Iran. The research is based on qualitative analysis using library sources, including books, scholarly articles, legal documents, and online materials. The findings indicate that the dam plays a significant role in water management, irrigation of agricultural lands, electricity generation, and job creation in the region. Furthermore, the management of Helmand River water has long been an important factor in Afghanistan–Iran relations. According to the 1973 Helmand Water Treaty, Iran is entitled to an average flow of 22 cubic meters per second, with an additional 4 cubic meters under normal conditions. Proper management of the dam can therefore contribute to Afghanistan’s economic development while supporting regional cooperation through effective water diplomacy.

Abstract

The Boko Haram insurgency remains one of the most significant threats to Nigeria's national security since the country's return to democratic governance in 1999. Since its violent uprising in 2009, the group has caused widespread killings, kidnappings, destruction of infrastructure, mass displacement, and severe socio-economic disruption, particularly in North-Eastern Nigeria. The insurgency has also evolved into a transnational security challenge affecting countries within the Lake Chad Basin. This study examines the impact of Boko Haram on Nigeria's national security, focusing on its military, political, economic, humanitarian, and social consequences. A qualitative descriptive research design was adopted, relying on documentary analysis of secondary data from academic publications, government reports, policy documents, and international organizations. The study is anchored on Human Security Theory and State Fragility Theory, which explain how governance failures, socio-economic deprivation, and weak institutions contributed to the emergence and persistence of the insurgency. Findings reveal that Boko Haram has weakened state authority, disrupted education and agriculture, intensified humanitarian crises, increased internal displacement, and undermined regional security cooperation. The study concludes that sustainable peace requires more than military action and recommends integrated measures including intelligence strengthening, institutional reforms, socio-economic development, community engagement, deradicalization programmes, enhanced border security, regional collaboration, and long-term peacebuilding initiatives.
