Abstract

Modern Islamic reform is an intellectual movement that emerged in response to the decline of Islamic civilization, Western colonialism, and the advancements in science and technology during the modern era. The movement aims to return Islamic teachings to their primary sources—the Quran and the Sunnah—by strengthening ijtihad (independent legal reasoning), reforming educational systems, and adapting Islamic thought to the dynamics of societal life without compromising Sharia principles. This article examines the history of the emergence of modern Islamic reform, the underlying factors, and the contributions of reformist figures to the evolution of Islamic thought. The study employs a qualitative research method using a library research approach, involving the collection and analysis of data from books, scholarly journals, and relevant academic sources. A descriptive-historical analysis is conducted to explain the development of Islamic reform from its inception to its impact on the lives of Muslims. The findings indicate that modern Islamic reform has brought about significant changes in the fields of education, law, politics, and socio-religious life. Figures such as Jamaluddin al-Afghani, Muhammad Abduh, and Rashid Rida played pivotal roles in fostering an Islamic worldview that is more rational, open to scientific knowledge, and capable of addressing contemporary challenges. Thus, modern Islamic reform serves not only as an effort to revitalize Islamic teachings but also as a foundation for the development of Islamic thought that remains relevant to the needs of modern society.

Abstract

The growing Muslim population in Western Europe, driven by migration, family reunification, and refugee movements, has contributed to the development of Islamic education as a means of maintaining religious identity while supporting social integration in multicultural societies. This study aims to analyze the development of Islamic education among Muslim minority communities in Western Europe, the factors influencing its development, and the challenges encountered in its implementation. This research employed a qualitative approach using library research. Data were obtained from scientific journals, academic books, international organization reports, and relevant policy documents published between 2020 and 2025. Data were analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña, which includes data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. The findings indicate that Islamic education has developed through Islamic schools, weekend madrasas, mosques, and informal family-based education. A comparative analysis shows that the development of Islamic education differs across countries. The United Kingdom provides relatively greater space for organized Islamic education within a multicultural framework, while the Netherlands demonstrates a stronger institutional recognition of Islamic schools. France adopts a more secular approach that creates greater limitations on the public expression of religious education, whereas Germany provides opportunities for Islamic religious education through cooperation between Muslim organizations and state institutions, although implementation varies across federal states. Overall, the development of Islamic education is influenced by government policies, Muslim community awareness, Islamic organizations, digital technology, and stakeholder collaboration. Major challenges include Islamophobia, secularism, limited funding, and the need for professionally qualified teachers. These findings imply that context-sensitive policies, institutional collaboration, and improved teacher professionalization are essential for developing Islamic education that strengthens religious identity while promoting the social integration of Muslim minorities in Western Europe.

Abstract

This study examines the condition of Islamic civilization during the transition to the modern period, particularly in relation to the European Renaissance and Enlightenment, and analyzes the expansion and consequences of Western colonialism in Muslim societies. It employs a qualitative approach based on library research, drawing on relevant books and scholarly journal articles as primary sources of analysis. The study applies the historical method through the stages of heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography to examine historical developments and their broader implications. The findings indicate that the intellectual and scientific legacy of Islamic civilization contributed to the development of European knowledge, while Muslim societies subsequently experienced political fragmentation and increasing vulnerability to European expansion. Western colonialism was driven by interconnected economic, political, strategic, and religious interests rather than by a single set of motives, and its expansion significantly transformed the political and socioeconomic structures of Muslim societies in the Middle East, India, and Indonesia. These historical pressures also provided an important context for the emergence of Islamic reformist thought aimed at responding to internal decline and external domination. The study concludes that the transformation of Islamic civilization in the modern period resulted from complex interactions between internal dynamics and European colonial expansion, which subsequently created the historical conditions for various responses and ideas of Islamic renewal.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the relationship between religion and violence by examining the theological, sociological, and political factors underlying the emergence of religion-based violence in Indonesia. The study employs a qualitative descriptive approach using library research. Data were drawn from books, peer-reviewed journal articles, research reports, and academic documents relevant to religion, conflict, intolerance, radicalism, and religion-based violence. The data were analyzed through systematic processes of identification, classification, interpretation, and synthesis of relevant literature and cases of religion-based violence, with particular attention to the Shi'a conflict in Sampang and the incidents in Tolikara and Tanjung Balai. The findings demonstrate that religion-based violence cannot be explained solely in terms of religious doctrine; rather, it emerges from the complex interplay of exclusivist religious interpretations, the reinforcement of group identities, social tensions, and political interests that instrumentalize religious symbols and identities as sources of legitimacy. Although the three cases exhibit distinct configurations of contributing factors, they share common patterns, including increasingly rigid boundaries between groups, limited intergroup dialogue, and the mobilization of religious sentiments in conflict situations. These findings underscore the multidimensional nature of religion-based violence and highlight the need for contextual analyses of the intersections among theological, sociological, and political factors. Accordingly, strengthening religious moderation, promoting intergroup dialogue, advancing tolerance education, and implementing equitable public policies are essential components of comprehensive efforts to prevent religion-based violence.

Abstract

This study examines the divergent responses of selected Uyghur diaspora organizations and elites to the Hamas attack of 7 October 2023, with particular attention to statements condemning the attack amid growing expressions of solidarity with Palestine across various Muslim communities. Employing a literature-based study and historical method, the research analyzes statements issued by diaspora organizations, publications produced by advocacy institutions, and relevant academic literature. The analysis draws on the perspectives of transnational Islamic solidarity and Fiqh al-Aqalliyyat to explain the position of the Uyghur diaspora as a Muslim minority navigating advocacy imperatives within the broader constellation of global politics. The findings reveal a tension between transnational religious solidarity and the strategic considerations of diaspora organizations and elites seeking to sustain the Uyghur advocacy agenda. This study interprets this tendency through the concept of religious realpolitik, defined here as the pragmatic political strategy through which religious actors or minority communities negotiate religious solidarity against the imperatives of safeguarding security, communal continuity, and external political support. From the perspectives of Fiqh al-Aqalliyyat and Maqasid al-Shari‘ah, this tendency may be understood as a negotiation between solidarity with the wider Muslim community and considerations of Hifz al-Nafs under conditions of political vulnerability experienced by minority communities. The study concludes that the Uyghur diaspora case demonstrates that transnational Islamic solidarity does not necessarily produce uniform political positions; rather, it may be negotiated and recalibrated according to the positionality, vulnerabilities, and strategic interests of Muslim communities within specific geopolitical contexts.
