Abstract

This study aims to analyze the impact of social media usage on the interpersonal communication skills of high school students. The background of this research is the increasing use of social media among teenagers and its potential impact on various aspects of interpersonal communication. The research method employed is qualitative, with a survey approach. Data analysis was conducted using linear regression techniques to examine the relationship between the independent variable (the intensity of social media use) and the dependent variable (interpersonal communication skills). The results of the study show a significant influence of social media use on students' interpersonal communication skills. Students who use social media with high intensity tend to have better interpersonal communication skills compared to those who use social media with low intensity. Additionally, the type of social media platform used also affects communication skills. More interactive platforms, such as Instagram and WhatsApp, have a greater positive impact compared to other platforms like Facebook and Twitter.

Abstract

This study aims to identify and analyze communication barriers present in the IM3 "Nyatakan Silaturahmi" advertisement on YouTube, using a semiotic approach based on John Fiske's theory. This advertisement was selected for its representation of social communication phenomena within the Indonesian cultural context, which strongly values the concept of "silaturahmi" (maintaining connections). Through semiotic analysis, this research seeks to uncover hidden meanings within the ad and explore how it communicates social messages to its audience. Fiske's semiotic approach is used to highlight three levels of codes in communication: reality codes, representation codes, and ideology codes, allowing for the identification of various communication barriers in message delivery. The study results reveal communication barriers in the form of differences in perception, symbol interpretation, and cultural values presented. In conclusion, these communication barriers in the ad may affect the audience's understanding of the message, highlighting the importance of contextual and cultural considerations in conveying messages through digital media. This research is expected to provide insights into designing more effective communication strategies that are culturally sensitive and suited to diverse audiences, particularly in digital advertising.

Abstract

This study examines the application of risk communication in the socialization process of Deli Serdang Regent Regulation No. 6 of 2025 on waste management, a policy that emerges amid increasing environmental and public health risks in the region. Using a descriptive qualitative design with a case study approach, the research involves 12 informants consisting of government officials, community leaders, and waste-management stakeholders. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and document analysis, and were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify patterns in message delivery, actor involvement, and audience response. The findings show that although the regulation mandates collective responsibility, its communication strategy remains predominantly one-way and has not fully articulated key risk dimensions—particularly localized environmental and health implications. One notable finding is the absence of mechanisms for two-way feedback, which reduces community readiness to adopt waste-sorting practices. This article contributes to risk communication scholarship by demonstrating how regulatory socialization in decentralized regions must integrate contextualized risk framing and community-based dialogic models to increase policy acceptance. Strengthening message clarity, enhancing source credibility, and utilizing adaptive digital media are therefore crucial to improving public understanding and fostering collective participation in waste management.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the representation of contemporary colonialism in the documentary film Pesta Babi: Colonialism in Our Time by Dandhy Laksono and to explain how information networks shape the legitimacy of power within the context of Papuan politics through the Nexus perspective proposed by Yuval Noah Harari. The research employs a qualitative approach using Norman Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis method. The primary data were obtained from the documentary film Pesta Babi: Colonialism in Our Time, while supporting data were drawn from the book Nexus: A Brief History of Information Networks from the Stone Age to AI, scholarly articles, and other relevant literature. The analysis focuses on narratives, dialogues, visuals, and social representations related to development, security, Indigenous communities, and the exploitation of natural resources in Papua. The findings reveal that the film represents Papua as a contested space where national development interests, extractive economic expansion, and the survival of Indigenous communities intersect. The study further demonstrates that the legitimacy of state policies is constructed through information networks that produce narratives of development, security, and national integration. Pesta Babi presents an alternative narrative that exposes the impacts of militarization, environmental degradation, and the marginalization of local communities, illustrating that contemporary colonialism operates through the control of natural resources, living spaces, and information production.

Abstract

Generational differences between Generation X and Generation Y couples influence communication patterns in their marriages, primarily driven by technological advancements. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, this study explored this phenomenon in depth by selecting informants through purposive sampling. The study results revealed significant differences: Generation X couples tended to avoid incorporating social media into their marital dynamics. Conversely, for Generation Y couples, social media use was more likely to trigger conflict due to misunderstandings. Nevertheless, both generations prioritized face-to-face communication to maintain a strong relationship. Ultimately, harmony and minimal conflict in the marriages of these two generations depend heavily on openness, shared commitment, and an understanding of each other's differing communication styles.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of sleep quality and stress levels on students’ coping with learning during lectures. Good sleep quality and controlled stress levels are important factors in supporting students’ learning process in an academic environment. However, demanding assignments, busy class schedules, and academic pressure often lead to sleep disturbances and increased stress levels, which can impact concentration, learning motivation, and academic performance. This study used a quantitative method with a survey approach. The population was active students, and the sampling technique used was purposive sampling. Data were collected through questionnaires measuring sleep quality, stress levels, and students’ ability to cope with learning during lectures. Data analysis was conducted using statistical tests to determine the relationships and influences between variables. The results showed that sleep quality significantly influenced students’ ability to participate in learning. Students with good sleep quality tended to be more focused, active, and able to understand lecture material more optimally. Furthermore, stress levels also impacted the learning process, where high levels of stress can reduce students’ concentration and academic performance. Simultaneously, sleep quality and stress levels influenced the effectiveness of student learning during lectures. Thus, this research is expected to serve as evaluation material for students and educational institutions to pay greater attention to physical and mental health to support successful learning in higher education.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the relationship between the use of WhatsApp as a communication platform and the effectiveness of disseminating learning-related information among students at SMAN 1 Talawi. The study employed a quantitative approach using a survey method involving 186 respondents selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using a four-point Likert-scale questionnaire comprising 24 valid items following a pilot test conducted with 30 students. The instrument demonstrated good reliability, with Cronbach’s Alpha coefficients of 0.867 for the WhatsApp utilization variable and 0.824 for the learning information dissemination variable. The findings revealed a positive relationship between the intensity of WhatsApp use in interpersonal and group communication and the efficiency and speed of learning information dissemination. These findings indicate that WhatsApp serves as an effective digital communication medium that facilitates the distribution of learning-related information and aligns with the uses and gratifications perspective, which conceptualizes students as active media users who select communication platforms according to their specific needs. This study underscores the importance of optimizing WhatsApp as a learning communication medium to facilitate faster, more accessible, and more effective information dissemination within the school environment.
