Abstract

Nationalism is often raised in Arabic poetry, presented in various forms, to foster a spirit of change in current social dynamics. In this case, the Iraqi poem "Lianni Gharib" by Badar Syakir Sayyab also presents this through its content. This study aims to analyze nationalism in the poem "Lianni Gharib" using Roland Barthes' semiotic theory, focusing on three levels of meaning: denotative, connotative, and mythical. The method used is content analysis with a qualitative descriptive approach. The results of this study show that the poem "Lianni Gharib" represents Iraqi nationalism through the poet's emotions of longing. At the denotative level, this poem directly conveys the poet's longing for the homeland by evoking foreignness, longing, destruction, and the presence of symbols of stone, blood, and the abyss in its depiction of Iraq. At the connotative level, this longing turns into a complex emotional experience where the author suffers greatly from his unhealed longing for Iraq as well as his suffering from Iraq's very poor socio-political conditions. Meanwhile, in the mythical context, this expression of longing conveys an ideological message about the movement for change and improvement in Iraq, making it appear subtle and natural (non-political). This relates to his exile due to the political turmoil in Iraq at the time.

Abstract

The increasingly massive global ecological crisis demonstrates the need to strengthen environmental awareness and literacy in society. Various forms of environmental damage, such as the exploitation of natural resources, loss of biodiversity, and ecosystem pollution, are caused not only by technical factors but also by humans' anthropocentric perspective on nature. In this context, oral literature, particularly Nusantara legends, has the potential as a medium for ecological education because it contains local wisdom values regarding the harmonious relationship between humans and the environment. This study aims to describe the forms of ecological wisdom contained in Nusantara legends through an ecocritical perspective. The study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with a content analysis technique. The research data source is a collection of Nusantara legends compiled by Astri Damayanti in the book Kumpulan Legenda Nusantara. The research data consists of words, phrases, sentences, and discourses that represent the relationship between humans and nature, conservation practices, environmental ethics, and natural resource management. The analysis is carried out through heuristic and hermeneutic readings to uncover the explicit and implicit ecological meanings in the text. The results of the study indicate that Nusantara legends contain five main dimensions of ecological wisdom, namely: (1) integration of human and natural life cycles, (2) local conservation wisdom, (3) environmental ethics, (4) warnings against the destructive consequences of natural exploitation, and (5) knowledge of environmental management. These findings indicate that Nusantara legends not only function as cultural heritage but also as ecological educational media that build ethical awareness and human responsibility towards environmental sustainability.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the elements that form idioms and their idiomatic meanings found in the regional section of the Riau Pos newspaper. The use of idioms in mass media, especially newspapers, plays an important role in enriching language style and conveying information more expressively. However, idioms can also cause misunderstandings because their meanings cannot be understood lexically. Therefore, a study of idiomatic meanings is important. This study uses a qualitative approach with a content analysis method. The data source is news texts from the regional section of the Riau Pos newspaper, published from February 10 to March 10, 2025, in the form of words, phrases, or expressions containing idioms. Data collection techniques involve documentation, reading, and recording, while data analysis includes data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion. The results of the study show that there are 34 idiom data classified into seven constituent elements, namely body parts, five senses, colors, natural objects, animals, plants, and numbers, and idioms are also found that are formed from a combination of two elements. Furthermore, the idiomatic meanings found are contextual and cannot be taken literally; they must be interpreted based on the context in which they are used within the sentence. These findings indicate that idioms in journalistic texts not only function as linguistic variation but also convey messages more effectively, engagingly, and communicatively to readers.

Abstract

The research begins with the problem that critical discourse analysis in literary works often stops at the theme of gender inequality without dissecting the narrative mechanisms that produce it. This study aims to reveal patriarchy as a result of discursive work by integrating Fairclough and Sara Mills' discourse analysis in the short stories Dawir, Turah, and Totol by Ahamad Tohari. The method used is qualitative, with integrated critical discourse analysis, namely the dimension of discursive practice to read the social context, as well as the analysis of the positions of the narrative subjects and objects, and the reader's position to trace the mechanism of the narrative. Data in the form of narrative discourse units, dialogues, character descriptions, and narrative points of view were collected through reading and note-taking, then analyzed in stages. The results of the study show four main findings, namely the terminal functions as a social practice that normalizes power relations; Turah is consistently positioned as the object of the narrative while the authority of meaning rests with the narrator and male characters; the text constructs the reader's position to follow a masculine perspective; and patriarchy emerges as a result of the integration of the social context and the narrative structure. These findings emphasize that ideology operates through the structure of the text, not just its content. This study concludes that integrating Fairclough and Sara Mills effectively extends critical discourse analysis beyond linguistic aspects to narrative mechanisms and reader construction, and opens new ways of reading the representation of marginalized women in literature.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of the Deep Learning approach assisted by Powtoon animation media on the ability to write anecdotal texts of class X students of SMK Parulian 1 Medan. This study uses a quantitative method with an experimental design of a one-group pretest-posttest design. The sample in this study amounted to 26 students selected with certain techniques according to research needs. The data collection technique was carried out using an anecdotal text writing ability test given before treatment (pretest) and after treatment (posttest). In addition, the research instrument has gone through a validation process to ensure the feasibility and accuracy of the data obtained. The data obtained were then analyzed using a normality test to determine the distribution of data and a hypothesis test using a t-test to determine the effect of the treatment given. The results of the study showed that there was an increase in students' ability to write anecdotal texts after being given treatment using the Deep Learning approach assisted by Powtoon animation media. This can be seen from the comparison of the average pretest and posttest scores, which experienced a significant increase. Based on the results of the t-test calculation, the t-hitung value was 6.840 while the table value was 2.059 at a significance level of 0.05 with degrees of freedom (df) = 25. Because t-hitung > t-tabel, the null hypothesis (H?) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (H?) was accepted. Thus, it can be concluded that the Deep Learning approach assisted by Powtoon animation media has a significant effect on the ability to write anecdotal texts of class X students of SMK Parulian 1 Medan.

Abstract

This study aims to reveal the aesthetic elements of rhythm and ethics contained in Harits Al-Makhzumi's qafiyah lam poetry through the approach of arudh and qawafi science. The focus of this study includes the identification of arudh and qawafi patterns used by the poet, as well as the moral values contained therein. This study departs from the view that poetry not only contains the beauty of sound structure, but also contains ethics that reflect moral values. This study uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive analytical research method, by combining the arudh (rhythm) and qawafi (rhyme) science approaches in analyzing poetry patterns, as well as the ethical approach according to Ibn Miskawaih to reveal moral values in literary works. This approach was chosen because the study aims to describe in depth the aesthetics of rhythm (arudh and qafiyah forms) and ethics contained in Harits Al-Makhzumi's qafiyah lam poetry. The data of this research were obtained from the text of Harits Al-Makhzumi's diwan through the technique of listening and noting, then analyzed using the theory of arudh and qawafi, as well as ethics according to Ibn Miskawaih, to interpret the moral values contained therein. The results of the study show that the syi'ir ber-qafiyah lam by Harits Al-Makhzumi uses 5 types of bahar, namely: towil, basith, romal, kamil tam, and khofif with different variations of zihaf and illat, as well as the form of qafiyah found at the end of the verse of the syi'ir. From the ethical aspect, 4 moral values were found according to Ibn Miskawaih, namely hikmah (wisdom), syaja'ah (courage), 'ifah (self-restraint), and 'adalah (just). This research is expected to contribute to the development of Arabic literary studies. Especially combining the aesthetics of rhythm and ethics in syi'ir.

Abstract

The Brainrot phenomenon on TikTok has produced absurd linguistic forms not found on other platforms. This study aims to map absurd neologisms and identify their phatic functions and roles in constructing group identity in the Indonesian TikTok community. A descriptive qualitative approach was used with content analysis of 50 TikTok videos hashtagged #Brainrot and related hashtags, from March to May 2026. Data were analyzed using an expanded neologistic framework that included the concept of absurd neologisms and Jakobson's theory of language function. The results reveal five categories of absurd neologisms: extreme clipping (rizz, gyatt), pseudo-reduplication (cupapi munianio, tung tung tung sahur), absurd composition (skibidi toilet, sigma boy), absurd onomatopoeia/interjections (hawk tuah, bomblacat), and new productive suffixes (-core, -maxxing). Phatic functions take five forms: explicit markers of group boundaries (IYKYK, moots), absurdity as an implicit marker of membership, meta-content (Brainrot quiz), hashtags as markers of affiliation, and phatic greetings and closings. In conclusion, absurd neologisms and phatic functions mutually reinforce group identity, with TikTok's affordances (short duration, audio dominance, and the YP algorithm) as the primary explanatory factor. These findings enrich the study of neology and phatic functions in short video-based digital communication.

Abstract

This article aims to describe the denotative and connotative meanings in the lyrics of Bernadya's songs entitled Lama-Lama, Ambang Pintu, and Kata Mereka Ini Berlebihan, using lexical-semantic analysis based on Chaer's (2013) theory. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method because it focuses on the meaning of language contained in song lyrics. The data collection technique is carried out through the listening and noting method, namely by carefully listening to the song lyrics and noting words, phrases, and sentences that convey denotative and connotative meanings. The research data sources are three songs by Bernadya, chosen for their rich, meaningful lyrics and descriptions of emotional experiences in romantic relationships. The results show that the three songs tell the story of someone who makes various sacrifices to maintain a romantic relationship. These sacrifices include understanding one's partner, even though it is not the main priority; giving a second chance to repair a strained relationship; changing oneself to meet the partner's expectations; and sacrificing time, energy, and feelings. Denotatively, these lyrics describe real actions taken in a romantic relationship. Meanwhile, connotatively, the lyrics convey loyalty, sincerity, sacrifice, and hope for a lasting relationship. Thus, the language used in Bernadya's lyrics demonstrates a richness of meaning, conveying profound emotional experiences through simple yet meaningful word choices. This research is expected to contribute to the development of semantic studies, particularly the analysis of meaning in song lyrics.

Abstract

This study analyzes the main character's inner wounds in the novel Broken Strings using Sigmund Freud's psychoanalytic approach, focusing on the personality structures of the id, ego, and superego. The method used is a descriptive, qualitative approach with a literary psychology perspective. The research data consists of quotations from the novel that reveal the main character's inner wounds. Data collection was carried out through reading and note-taking. In contrast, the data analysis used content analysis, with the stages of identification, classification, interpretation, and conclusion drawing, based on Freud's psychoanalytic theory. The results show that an imbalance among the id, ego, and superego forms the main character's inner wounds. The id aspect appears in the form of spontaneous emotional responses such as fear, panic, anxiety, and the desire to avoid situations that trigger traumatic experiences. The ego aspect shows a weakened function due to repeated psychological pressure, leading the character to compromise, rationalize, and surrender to situations that are detrimental to him. The superego becomes the dominant personality structure through the emergence of excessive guilt, heightened moral demands, and a tendency to blame himself. The dominance of the superego deepens the character's inner wounds by fostering ongoing psychological pressure. This research shows that emotional wounds in literary works are influenced not only by characters' traumatic experiences but also by the dynamics of the relationship among the id, ego, and superego. The research findings enrich the study of literary psychology by demonstrating that Freud's personality structure can be used to explain the process of formation and persistence of emotional wounds in literary characters.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the function of expressive illocutionary speech acts in the film Sumala by Riheam Junianti. This study is motivated by the importance of expressive speech acts in conveying characters' feelings, attitudes, and emotional responses, which play a role in building the storyline and social relationships among characters in the film. The study uses a qualitative, descriptive approach. The research data consist of the characters' expressive speech acts, and the data source is the film Sumala, produced by Hitmaker Studios and broadcast on Netflix. Data collection was carried out through listening and note-taking, with careful observation of the dialogue, expressions, and context of the conversation. Data analysis was carried out in three stages: data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion. The results of the study show that there are six functions of expressive speech acts in the dialogue of the film Sumala, namely blaming, criticizing, apologizing, thanking, complaining, and praising. Of all the data found, blaming is the most dominant form, with 14 data, followed by criticizing with 8, apologizing with 5, thanking with 3, complaining with 2, and praising with 1. The dominance of the blaming function indicates the strength of the conflict and emotional tension built into the film. The findings of this study indicate that expressive speech acts play a crucial role in representing the characters' psychological states, establishing the story's atmosphere, and clarifying the meaning and social relationships embedded in the film's dialogue.
