Abstract

This study aims to analyse the forms of self-defence mechanisms used by the character of Sheikh Ali in the short story Thabliyyah min as-Sama' by Yusuf Idris using Sigmund Freud's Psychoanalytic approach. The main problem in this study lies in how psychological pressures in the form of poverty, failure, and social rejection shape Sheikh Ali's psychological response, and what types of self-defense mechanisms emerge as a result of the conflict. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method with content analysis techniques, where data in the form of narrative excerpts and character dialogues are analyzed to identify and classify the forms of self-defense mechanisms. The results show that Sheikh Ali uses ten self-defense mechanisms as proposed by Freud, namely repression, projection, rationalization, displacement, sublimation, denial, regression, reaction formation, identification, and compensation. This finding confirms that Sheikh Ali's inner conflict is the result of a dynamic interaction between the id, ego, and superego when faced with the stressful realities of life. This study offers a new perspective to investigate the short story Thabliyyah min as-Sama'. This study enhances our understanding of the representation of characters' psyches in Yusuf Idris's works and demonstrates that literature can be a valuable tool for studying human adaptive strategies for overcoming conflict and adversity. Therefore, this study expands the scope of research on Sigmund Freud's Psychoanalysis in contemporary Arabic literature, particularly in reading works related to socio-psychological topics.
Hegemoni Budaya dan Transendensi Syafa'at dalam Al-Hamziyyah Al-Nabawiyyah Karya Ahmad Syauqi: Studi Semiotika Roland Barthes : Cultural Hegemony and the Transcendence of Syafa'at in Ahmad Syauqi's Al-Hamziyyah Al-Nabawiyyah: A Semiotic Study by Roland Barthes Saputra, Indra; Rokhim, Minatur; Choironi, Merry; Alfarisi, Salman; Zahiyah, Adibah Bahirah

Abstract

Modern Arabic literature during the Neoclassical period (al-madrasah al-ihya’iyyah) serves not only as a medium of aesthetic expression but also as a strategic cultural response to the socio-political conditions faced by Muslims under the pressure of Western colonial hegemony. Qasidah Al-Hamziyyah Al-Nabawiyyah by Ahmad Syauqi is one of the monumental masterpieces that uniquely combines elements of praise (madih) to the Prophet Muhammad with sharp social criticism (naqd ijtima’i) towards the reality of his time. Unfortunately, academic readings of this work have often been limited to formalistic aspects, such as meter and rhetoric studies, so that the ideological dimensions and content of resistance hidden behind the beauty of its poetic diction have not been comprehensively revealed. This study aims to fill this gap by employing descriptive qualitative methods, drawing on Roland Barthes’ semiotic approach. The analysis focuses on three layers of meaning: denotation, connotation, and myth (signification), with data sourced from the closing verses of Al-Hamziyyah, which contain a transition from praise to complaint (syakwa). This study found that Ahmad Syauqi constructed three main myths as a form of symbolic resistance. First, the myth of the "Delegitimation of Western Modernity," in which the symbol of Ruma (Rome) is used to undermine the narrative of European legal superiority and affirm the justice of Sharia. Second, the myth of the "Sacralization of Art," in which the diction 'ara'is (bride) naturalizes poetry as a sacred tool for spiritual transactions. Third, the myth of "Syafa'at as the Absolute Solution," which places Islamic spirituality above the rationality of materialism as a way out of the ummah's crisis. Through Barthes's approach, it is revealed that Al-Hamziyyah is not merely a religious text, but a counter-hegemonic discourse that affirms the superiority of Islamic spirituality in the face of modern civilization.

Abstract

Advances in digital technology have changed the way teenagers communicate, particularly on online gaming platforms like Roblox. This platform has become a platform for the development of slang, a variation of informal language used for quick and efficient communication during gameplay. Slang in online games takes various forms and continues to evolve in response to changing communication needs and trends. The purpose of this study is to describe the forms of slang found in the game "Indo Camp" on Roblox. The method used in this study is a descriptive qualitative approach, with data collected in the form of speech that contains slang. Data were collected through free listening, screen recording, and note-taking techniques. Data analysis employed the matching method, utilizing sorting techniques, determining elements, and comparing and equating methods. The results show the presence of five forms of slang: abbreviations, humorous mispronunciations, shortenings, interjections, and adaptations from foreign languages. Abbreviations dominate, with 12 data points, and interjections are the least common, with 3 data points found out of a total of 31. Slang in online games is temporal, limited, and continues to evolve in response to digital developments and the changing communication needs of teenagers. Online gaming platforms serve as a platform for innovation for teenagers to create and disseminate new terms. This phenomenon also demonstrates adolescent communication patterns in the digital age, demonstrating the linguistic creativity of the younger generation.

Abstract

Regional songs are authentic sources that represent the socio-cultural life of the communities in which they emerge. Therefore, research is needed to examine how the socio-cultural conditions of the Bima people are represented in the regional songs Kambali Mbojo Mantoi and Tio Kalao by Gun Malingi. This study aims to reveal the socio-cultural changes reflected in these two songs as well as the didactic values embedded within them. The research employs a literary sociology approach supported by social change theory. A descriptive qualitative method is applied to analyze the song lyrics, focusing on the socio-cultural changes and didactic values they contain. The findings show that: (1) the songs represent socio-cultural changes through the diminishing presence of several Bima traditions, such as pako fare, doa dana, rawi rasa, kareku kandei, and rimpu mpida; (2) the songs also depict shifts in the relationship between humans and nature; and (3) the researcher identifies didactic values in the form of Bima local wisdom ngaha aina ngoho which serves to reinforce educational values. These changes indicate a regression within the Bima community, marked by the fading of socio-cultural values and environmental degradation. Ultimately, these Bima regional songs play a vital role in preserving and sustaining Bima cultural identity and traditions, while fostering collective awareness of the importance of safeguarding cultural values, traditions, and the natural environment amid modern social change.

Abstract

Oral speaking skills, particularly presentation skills, are continuously developed and improved throughout higher education so that students gain courage, confidence, and the ability to articulate their thoughts and opinions to others. Presentation skills are also a key requirement for university graduates entering the professional world. This study aims to examine students’ spoken utterances and oral language use during academic presentations at a private university in Jakarta, Indonesia. The research employs both qualitative and quantitative descriptive approaches. Data collection was conducted from May to July 2025, involving 122 student respondents. Qualitative data were obtained through observation and documentation in the form of recorded presentation videos. Quantitative data were collected using a Likert-scale questionnaire with four response options ranging from strongly disagree to strongly agree. The findings indicate that in the aspect of speaking, more than 50% of the respondent's paid attention to clarity of articulation, emphasized important words, and adjusted their speech so it was neither too loud nor too soft. Additionally, more than 70% acknowledged that they regulated their volume appropriately and avoided monotonous intonation. However, regarding the use of formal Indonesian, 66% of respondents still mixed formal Indonesian with colloquial or conversational language; 44% continued to insert English words; and 35% still confused the use of the pronouns kita and kami. The study concludes that presentations in higher education are not merely the act of delivering material but also require careful control of stress, intonation, rhythm, and tempo, as well as the appropriate use of formal spoken Indonesian.

Abstract

This study examines the messages of hope expressed by Syrian child victims of war in the music video Daqat al-Qalb (Heartbeat) composed by Zade Dirani in collaboration with UNICEF. Using a descriptive qualitative method, the research applies Ferdinand de Saussure’s semiotic framework to analyze how linguistic and visual signs interact to construct meaning. The analysis focuses on two primary components: (1) signifiers in the Arabic lyrics that articulate pain, fear, emotional struggle, and aspirations for change, and (2) visual symbols such as rubble, white flowers, collective movement, and bright colors that reinforce the thematic representation of hope. The data were obtained through close reading and repeated observation of the video, with additional secondary sources providing contextual support on the Syrian conflict and semiotic theory. The findings reveal five dominant categories of hope represented in the video: the hope to escape suffering and destruction; the desire to eliminate fear; the yearning to be heard and acknowledged by the world; the aspiration to gain strength and rise together; and the vision of rebuilding a brighter, more vibrant life. These categories demonstrate that the children are not merely depicted as passive victims but as active agents articulating their trauma, resilience, and collective dreams. The study contributes to visual-verbal semiotic research by showing how audiovisual media can effectively convey humanitarian messages and represent lived experiences of children in conflict zones. Despite the limitation of using non-official Arabic lyric sources, the findings highlight the power of symbolic interaction in shaping emotional and humanitarian meanings within music videos.

Abstract

This study focuses on the psychology of the main character in a literary work. The literary work that is the subject of this study is a novel. One novel that examines the psychology of the main character is Acha Goodbye by Yesycha Mangopo (2021). This study uses the theory of literary psychology, namely David Krech's Classification of Emotions (1974). The method used in this study is a descriptive qualitative approach, based on the results of an in-depth study of the novel Acha Goodbye by Yesycha Mangopo (2021). David Krech's Classification of Emotions (1974), as found in the novel Acha Goodbye by Yesycha Mangopo (2021), includes aspects of repressed guilt, shame, sadness, anger, and love experienced by the main character, Anasthacya Friska Breklin, who is known as Acha or by her childhood name, Cia. Acha's sadness, mixed with anger, stems from her being ostracized by her family. Her family ostracized Acha because she could not share a roof with Eca (Acha's twin) due to health problems. Even though Acha also had the same illness as Eca, her family ignored her. Her family always put Eca first. Therefore, the main character Acha in the novel Acha Goodbye by Yesycha Mangopo (2021) experienced psychological disturbances due to her family's treatment of her isolation. This provides evidence that Acha, the main character in a literary work, is a paradigm of human life in the real world. Arbitrary family treatment causes people's psychological health to experience mental health disorders.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the dynamics of complex social structures in Najib Mahfuz's literary works through the lens of Pierre Bourdieu's sociological approach to literature. The background of this study is based on Hara's central position in Mahfuz's narrative, which serves as a microcosm of Egyptian society, marked by value conflicts and power struggles. Using a qualitative descriptive method with a textual approach, this study dissects three selected short stories: "Zakirat al-Jiran" (Memories of Neighbors), "Al-Hutaf" (The Call), and "Sada al-Nisyan" (Echoes of Forgetfulness). The analysis specifically applies Bourdieu's triadic concept of Habitus, Capital (economic and Symbolic), and Field, or Arena, to uncover the hidden mechanisms of domination. The study's results reveal diverse manifestations of social structures. "Zakirat al-Jiran" depicts the phenomenon of hysteresis of habitus, where conflicts continue to be reproduced blindly despite the loss of their historical roots, indicating the stagnation of tradition. "Al-Hutaf" highlights the violent clash between Economic Capital and Symbolic Capital, where the moral integrity of society successfully resists the wealth obtained from corruption, proving that social legitimacy cannot always be bought with money. Finally, "Sada al-Nisyan" criticizes the cycle of tyranny; the return of the main character's cruelty after amnesia proves that changes in individual behavior are meaningless without a transformation of the structure of the power arena itself. In conclusion, Mahfouz describes a social structure that is resistant to change, where the position of social agents is largely determined by the accumulation of symbolic capital and habitus that have been firmly institutionalized in society.

Abstract

This study examines the existence of the Javanese language in Wonomulyo within a multicultural context, identifies factors supporting and inhibiting its maintenance, and interprets its significance through the philosophy of language. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through interviews, participant observation, and documentation involving community leaders, teachers, parents, and youths. The findings indicate that Javanese continues to maintain moderate vitality, particularly within family, community, and cultural–ritual domains such as selamatan and kenduren. In these contexts, Javanese functions not only as a means of communication but also as a medium for transmitting moral values, social etiquette, and collective identity, especially through the practice of unggah-ungguh. However, language maintenance faces significant challenges. The dominance of Indonesian in formal education, public spaces, and digital communication has led to a gradual narrowing of Javanese use, particularly among younger generations. While youths remain bilingual, Indonesian is increasingly associated with modernity and mobility, whereas Javanese is largely confined to symbolic and intimate domains. From a philosophical perspective drawing on Wittgenstein, Heidegger, and Foucault, the study argues that the weakening of Javanese reflects not only linguistic change but also shifts in meaning, identity, and power relations. The study highlights the need for integrated efforts involving families, communities, education, and digital spaces to sustain regional languages in multicultural societies.

Abstract

The Nyadran tradition is one of the Javanese cultural rituals that is still maintained as part of social and religious life. In Mojodadi Village, Kedungpring District, Lamongan Regency, the Nyadran tradition is unique for blending Hindu-Javanese elements with Islamic teachings. This phenomenon indicates the practice of cultural syncretism that not only survives but also adapts to the belief system of modern society. This study aims to describe the form of syncretism and reveal the values ??contained in the implementation of the Nyadran Tradition in Mojodadi Village. This study uses a qualitative, descriptive method. Data collection techniques include direct observation during the implementation of the Nyadran ritual, in-depth interviews with caretakers, religious leaders, village officials, and community supporters of the tradition, and documentation in the form of photos, videos, and recordings of ritual speech. Data analysis is carried out through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and systematic conclusion drawing. The results of the study indicate that syncretism in the Nyadran Tradition is apparent in three main dimensions, namely the verbal dimension characterized by the combination of Javanese ujub and mantras with the recitation of Yasin, tahlil, and Islamic prayers; the material dimension seen in the use of ambeng, flowers, and offerings that are reinterpreted as a form of charity; and the spatial-temporal dimension reflected in the choice of the lake as the location of the ritual and the month of Maulud as the time of implementation. In addition, the Nyadran Tradition contains religious-spiritual, social-collective, and moral-ethical values ??that strengthen the community's cultural identity. Thus, the Nyadran Tradition serves as a bridge between ancestral cultural heritage and Islamic teachings, and it plays a social, spiritual, and educational role for the people of Mojodadi Village.
