Abstract

Language interference in regional literary works is an inevitable phenomenon amidst the multilingual dynamics of its speaking communities. Balinese short stories published in the mass media provide the most concrete opportunity to observe how elements of other languages ??enter and shape the language patterns of contemporary Balinese writers. This phenomenon has direct implications for the preservation of Balinese as a regional language in the global era. This study employs a qualitative descriptive approach, utilizing primary data in the form of Balinese short stories published in newspapers. Data were collected through a listening method with note-taking techniques, analyzed using the matching and distribution method, and presented using formal and informal methods. The theoretical basis used is Applied Sociolinguistics Theory regarding language interference. The interference found originates from two language groups: internal interference from Indonesian and external interference from English. From a linguistic perspective, interference occurs at the vocabulary and phrase level. Factors triggering interference include the speaker's bilingualism, the lack of appropriate lexical equivalents in Balinese, the speaker's positive attitude towards other languages, and the influence of developments in the era and media. Interference in Balinese short stories is a logical consequence of intense language contact in the speaker's environment. This phenomenon cannot be completely eliminated, but it can be minimized by strengthening positive attitudes toward Balinese and standardizing accepted loanwords. Interference also poses a challenge to efforts to preserve Balinese amid the pressures of globalization.

Abstract

Engghi Bhunten is the highest level of Madurese speech, reflecting the highest level of politeness and respect. However, its use is now threatened by the influence of globalization and modernization. At the Al-Maimunah Girls' Islamic Boarding School, although the majority of students are Madurese, they rarely use Engghi Bhunten in their daily communication. This study aims to analyze the use of Engghi Bhunten as an effort to preserve the Madurese language within the girls' Islamic boarding school environment. This qualitative research, with a descriptive and interpretive design, was conducted at the Al-Maimunah Girls' Islamic Boarding School in Kembang Jeruk Village, Sampang Regency, East Java. Participants were selected purposively, consisting of the head of the boarding school, female teachers, and students. Data were collected through non-participant observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation. Data validity was ensured through the triangulation of sources and techniques, while data analysis involved reduction, presentation, and drawing conclusions. The use of Engghi Bhunten at the Al-Maimunah Girls' Islamic Boarding School is systematically integrated into all student activities and has a significant impact on preserving the Madurese language. Internal factors that support this are the students' awareness of maintaining good manners, while external factors include the boarding school's rules, the role models of female teachers and senior students, and the consistency of the boarding school environment. The impact is evident in the students' increased understanding of the levels of politeness, language rules, and the use of vocabulary in context, enabling them to become more polite, confident, and skilled in speaking Madurese. The practice of using Engghi Bhunten not only improves students' linguistic competence but also fosters a polite and cultured character, while making them active agents in preserving the Madurese language. The boarding school plays an effective role as a space for habituating regional language preservation through the integration of cultural and religious values in everyday communication.

Abstract

This study examines the representation of women's existence through the character of Tawhida in Naguib Mahfouz's short story Tahwida using Simone de Beauvoir's existential feminism perspective. This perspective views women not as objects of patriarchal culture, but as subjects who have awareness, freedom, and authenticity in determining their existence. Using a descriptive qualitative method and a literature review approach, this study focuses on collecting data and information from various written sources, such as books, scientific journals, articles, and documents relevant to this research. This study explores how the body, subjectivity, spirituality, and social relations of the character Tawhida represent women's struggles in facing social constructs that limit their freedom of movement. The results of the study show that Tawhida is not merely a symbol of beauty or domestication, but rather an autonomous, spiritual, and intellectual woman. She transcends the social boundaries that constrain her and demonstrates the ability to consciously interpret her life. In the context of modern Arabic literature, the representation of Tawhida marks a paradigm shift from passive women to active, critical, and empowered subjects. Thus, this study confirms that female characters in literary works can be a means of articulating women's authentic existence, as well as a form of resistance against the objectification and subordination attached to women's bodies and social roles.

Abstract

This study examines the Sunan Giri Friday Sermon (KKJSG) as one of the important religious texts from the early period of Islam in Java. As a preaching and educational text, KKJSG combines classical Arabic rhetoric with local cultural elements, thus becoming an important representation of the process of indigenization of Islam in the archipelago. The study uses a qualitative descriptive approach with stylistic and content analysis. The primary data consists of twelve sermons in KKJSG, which are analyzed based on their structure, language patterns, stylistic devices, and social functions. Data collection techniques include textual reading, identification of stylistic elements, and thematic categorization. The study shows that KKJSG has a standard sermon structure name, introduction, content, and conclusion that is consistent across all Hijri months. Dominant stylistic devices include saj’, jin?s, and iqtib?s, each serving to strengthen rhetorical power, add symbolic capital, and provide religious legitimacy. The combination of Arabic (70%) and Javanese (30%) and the agrarian-maritime metaphors demonstrates the process of cultural adaptation in Sunan Giri's preaching. Other findings indicate that the sermons function multidimensionally, namely as a means of preaching, Islamic boarding school education, and legitimizing political leadership. The results of this study confirm that the KKJSG is not merely a religious text, but also a medium for the formation of Javanese Islamic identity through a creative dialogue between global texts and local culture. Further research is recommended to conduct philological studies, comparisons of Nusantara preaching manuscripts, and technology-based linguistic analysis to enrich the understanding of the stylistics of Nusantara Islam.

Abstract

Literary works often reflect the complexities of life, including trauma and psychological conflict. The novel Rumah untuk Alie highlights the childhood trauma of a girl in a dysfunctional family that shapes her identity and behavior, and addresses systemic violence in a patriarchal family. This study aims to understand the trauma and healing process of the main character as a reflection of the struggle to confront inner wounds, employing a descriptive, qualitative literary psychology approach. Data in the form of narrative excerpts, dialogues, and behavioral descriptions related to trauma and psychological conflict were collected from the novel. The analysis covers trauma identification, interpretation of psychological symptoms, and exploration of the character's healing process based on trauma theory and psychoanalysis, emphasizing the meaning of the traumatic experience for the character's personality. The main character experiences deep psychological trauma due to her mother's loss and family violence, triggering alienation and guilt that manifest as fear, social withdrawal, and suicidal ideation. Despite facing rejection, Alie gradually undergoes self-acceptance and inner healing, demonstrating the struggle from devastation to courage and reconciliation with her past. Besides criticizing patriarchal violence, the story emphasizes the importance of empathy and inner peace.

Abstract

Below is the OJS-style academic English translation of your text. The tone is formal, concise, and suitable for a journal article. The novel Tenggelamnya Kapal Van der Wijck by Hamka not only presents a tragic love story but also reflects the tension between rigid Minangkabau customary norms and the individual aspirations emerging within a society in transition. Tradition, when preserved in an inflexible manner, often generates identity conflicts and suppresses personal freedom, making the text particularly compelling when examined through a postcolonial lens. This study employs a qualitative method with a descriptive–interpretative approach. Data were collected through close reading and note-taking techniques, then analyzed using key concepts in postcolonial theory such as hybridity, subalternity, and mimicry. The validity of the data was strengthened through theory, source, and researcher triangulation. The analysis reveals three major forms of resistance to tradition within the novel. First, Zainuddin’s proactive resistance is manifested through the construction of a hybrid identity positioned outside the hegemony of customary norms. Second, Hayati’s passive resistance represents the voice of the subaltern within patriarchal structures. Third, Aziz’s destructive resistance emerges through his mimicry of Western modernity, which ultimately leads to self-ruin. These three modes of resistance indicate that tradition can operate as a form of internal colonialism that constrains the individual. The study concludes that Tenggelamnya Kapal Van der Wijck is not merely a romantic narrative but also serves as a counter-narrative critiquing oppressive customs and power structures. Thus, Hamka’s work can be understood as a reflection of identity struggles and resistance against cultural hegemony within a postcolonial context.

Abstract

This study aims to examine how George Bernard Shaw dramatizes the idea of change as both a moral and intellectual necessity for human and social progress. It seeks to analyze how Shaw's conception of transformation functions as an ethical, social, and artistic principle across three of his major plays: (Saint Joan, 1923), (Pygmalion, 1913), and (Arms and the Man, 1894). This study explores George Bernard Shaw’s dramatic representation of change as a dynamic social, moral, and intellectual process across these influential plays. Shaw’s theatre functions as a critique of stagnation, whether political, religious, or personal and as a call for continuous re-evaluation of inherited ideas. By dramatizing moments of transition within individuals and societies, Shaw transforms the stage into a forum for intellectual evolution. This paper argues that Shaw conceives of change not as an abstract ideal but as a moral imperative, one that disrupts complacency, exposes hypocrisy, and fosters authentic progress. Using a combination of textual analysis, New Historicist and socio-critical frameworks, the research demonstrates that Shaw’s characters Joan of Arc, Eliza Doolittle, and Captain Bluntschli embody catalysts of transformation who question dogma and reveal the tension between reality and illusion. Through their struggles, Shaw redefines heroism as intellectual courage and moral adaptability rather than mere physical valour or social conformity. The study concludes that Shaw’s theatre remains profoundly relevant to modern audiences for its vision of change as both a disruptive and regenerative force, essential for the renewal of human consciousness and social order.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of using Padlet media in enhancing the biographical writing skills of Grade X students at SMA Negeri 7 Medan during the 2024/2025 academic year. The initial problem identified was the low level of students' writing skills, particularly in aspects such as idea organization, biographical plot arrangement, language use, and spelling accuracy. Of the 36 students who became the research sample, selected through a simple random sampling technique, 80% obtained scores below the Minimum Completion Criteria (KKM). This study employed a one-group pretest–posttest design, where students received a pretest and a posttest after implementing Padlet as a learning medium. The assessment instrument covered five main aspects, namely orientation, problem events, reorientation, language use, and writing style. The results showed a significant improvement in all aspects of writing skills. The students' average score increased from 57.58 in the pretest to 75.05 in the posttest. The results of the paired t-test show that t_count = 9.8184 is greater than t_table = 1.66691 at a significance level of 0.05, so the Alternative Hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. These findings suggest that Padlet effectively enhances students' writing skills through its collaborative features, visual workspaces, and easy feedback, allowing students to compose and revise texts in a more structured manner. Thus, this study confirms that Padlet is a relevant and efficient digital media to support learning to write biographical texts. Further research is recommended to employ an experimental design with a control group and a larger sample size.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze translation strategies for figurative language in Indonesian literary works into English, using a stylistic approach and translation theory. The main focus of the study is how translators maintain the meaning, aesthetic effects, and cultural context of the source text without sacrificing the beauty of the language in the target text. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method with content analysis techniques on a number of figurative language style sentences found in selected literary works. The results show that the most frequently used translation strategies are equivalence, adaptation, and paraphrase. These three strategies have proven effective in maintaining the aesthetic and emotional value of the source text, though in some cases, shifts in meaning arise due to cultural and linguistic differences between the two languages. Numerically, the stylistic analysis reveals that metaphor is the most frequently used figurative device, accounting for 36% of all stylistic findings. This finding confirms that figurative language style not only functions as linguistic ornamentation but also represents the author's complex cultural values, imagination, and emotional expression. Therefore, translators need to be sensitive to stylistic elements and cultural contexts to produce communicative translations while remaining faithful to the original meaning and nuances of the source text. This research is expected to enrich the study of literary translation in Indonesia and to serve as a reference for researchers and translators in understanding the challenges of translating figurative language across cultures.

Abstract

This study aims to examine how unmarried pregnant women are portrayed in Triman Laksana’s novel Menjaring Mata Angin. The research applies Stuart Hall’s (1997) theory of representation and Tong’s (2004) liberal feminist theory. In Indonesian society, unmarried pregnant women are often perceived as violating social and religious norms, which leads to their being subjected to stigma and discrimination. This study seeks to fill a gap in previous research, which generally focuses on patriarchy in broad terms without highlighting more specific forms of representation. The method employed in this research is descriptive qualitative with a critical discourse analysis approach. The data consist of selected excerpts from the novel Menjaring Mata Angin, which were collected through close reading and subsequently verified using theoretical triangulation. The analysis centers on various forms of female representation, particularly in three aspects: physical-symbolic, socio-cultural, and ideological. The findings reveal that in the physical-symbolic aspect, the female body is depicted as a moral symbol constantly subjected to surveillance. In the socio-cultural aspect, women are portrayed as guardians of family honor. Meanwhile, in the ideological aspect, masculine control is evident in the restrictions placed on women’s bodily autonomy. However, the main character in the novel exhibits acts of resistance against this system, reflecting the spirit of liberal feminism, which emphasizes women’s freedom and autonomy. Based on these findings, it is concluded that Menjaring Mata Angin functions as a counter-discourse that not only reflects the social conditions faced by women but also critiques patriarchal ideology and gender injustice within Indonesian culture.
