This journal contains the writings of lecturers, students and linguistic practitioners from both inside and outside the campus. This journal is published twice a year, in April and October.

Abstract

Makna non-literal sering digunakan dalam komunikasi, baik secara lisan maupun tulisan. Dalam tulisan, makna non-literal digunakan juga di dalam iklan sehingga penulis merasa tertarik untuk meneliti mengenai makna non-literal yang digunakan di dalam iklan, khususnya iklan kosmetika di Majalah Cosmopolitan. Dari hasil penelitian ditemukan bahwa jenis-jenis makna non-literal yang digunakan dalam iklan kosmetika di Majalah Cosmopolitan adalah personifikasi, hiperbola, synecdoche, simile dan metafora. Dari hasil analisa ditemukan juga bahwa masing-masing jenis makna non-literal memiliki arti tertentu.

Abstract

This study deals with Heroism in Danielle Steel’s Winners.The problems of this study arerelated towhat characteristics of hero as portrayed by the main character in Danielle Steel’s Winners and how does the main character portray the characteristics of a hero in Danielle Steel’s Winners. The analyzing applies the theory of Rottman about characteristics of a hero; they are empathy, courage, sacrifice, responsibility, selflessness, humility, determination, and wisdom. The method used by the writer in analyzing heroism of the main character in novel is descriptive qualitative method. The findings about heroism shown in Winners such as empathy, courage, sacrifice, responsibility, selflessness, humility, determination, wisdom and the ways of main character as true hero and a good father who always sacrifices to save life of his only daughter.

Abstract

Artikel ini menganalisa jenis dari bahasa figuratif yang terdapat dalam puisi-puisi berbahasa Inggris.Selain itu, artikel ini juga akan mengemukakan jenis – jenisbahasa figuratifdan jenis bahasa figuratif yang paling dominan digunakan dalam puisi – puisi berbahasa Inggris. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif dalam menganalisis data. Hasil analisa menunjukkan bahwa terdapat 8jenis bahasa figuratifyang digunakan dalam puisi – puisi berbahasa Inggris,Deegan tingkat penggunaan yang berbeda yaitu: Personification 59 data (26, 33%), Assonance 46 data (20, 53%) Simile 27 data (12,05%), Rhetorical Question 23 data (10,26%), Hyperbole 22 data (9,82%), Apostrophe 17 data (7,58%), Alliteration 17 data (7,58%), dan yang terakhir Synecdoche 13 data (5,80%). Dari jenis – jenis bahasa figuratif yang digunakan dalam puisi – puisi berbahasa Inggris ditemukan bahwa jenis bahasa figuratif, personificationpaling dominan digunakan. Hal ini menunjukkan bahwa bahasa figuratif, personification digunakan untuk memperindah karya dalam penyampaian pesan dalam puisi – puisi berbahasa Inggris.

Abstract

Sons and Lovers adalah sebuah karya novel yang ditulis oleh D.H. Lawrence, seorang penulis sastra Inggris abad ke 19. Menurut Cavitch (1969), D.H. Lawrence menulis Sons and Lovers dilandasi oleh latar belakang kehidupannya yang menceritakan hubungankamisayang antara seorang anak dengan seorang ibu. Keadaan ini membuat si pengarang(yangdilakonkan oleh Paul Morel)tided mampu berjauhan dengan ibunya, dan menjadikannya sebagai seorang anak yang patuh, sehingga dengan arahan ibunya yang tidak mengijinkannya untuk bergaul dengan wanita lain, tanpa menyadari bahwa dirinya mengalami psikologis Oedipus Complex, akhirnya ibunya berhasil menjadikannya sebagai kekasih. Karena penelitian ini di dalam lingkup disiplin Pengkajian Amerika maka selain menggunakan pendekatan psychology, juga menekankan pada pendekatan interdisiplin, di antaranya pendekatan sejarah, budaya, sosiologi, biografi, dan pendekatan sastra. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa peran seorang single parent tidak cukup kuat untuk membentuk karakter anak, akan tetapi seorang ibu juga harus berdampingan dengan seorang laki-laki (ayah) yang menjadi role model dalam pembentukan karakter anak.

Abstract

This researchentitled An Analysis of illocutionary Acts as Found in Jane Austen's Mansfield Parkwhich dealing with theexpressive illocutionary acts as the analysis of pragmatics on novel utterances. The objective of this analysis was to prove that the expressive illocutionary couldalso be applied in literature, especially to find out the types, the dominant types and the reason of the most dominantly expressive illocutionary act in Jane Austen’s Mansfield Park. This research was conducted by using qualitative and quantitative method. The data were taken from all the evenchapters in the novel. The result showed that there were 140 expressive illocutionary acts. They were found in the novel with the classification as follows: expressive for thanks 12 (8.58%), expressive for apologies 9 (6.43%), expressive for congratulations 16 (11.43 %), expressive for greetings 5 ​​(3.57%), expressive for wishes 30 (21.43%), expressive for attitudes 68 (48.57%). The most dominant classification of expressive illocutionary acts was expressives for attitudes68 (48.57%). The reason of this type of dominant expressive for attitudes in Jane Austen's Mansfield Park because it recounts the daily conversation and conveys what the author believes. It means that the author of the novel makes all the utterances in a novel based on assumptions, her feelings and her experiences, so all of the utterances are mostly used to criticize, denounce and complain expression for attitudes.

Abstract

This study discusses about Deixis. It is the term from Greek which means pointing by language. This study aims at finding the types of Deixis used in John Legend’s selected songs’ lyrics and finding the types of Deixis most dominantly used in John Legend’s selected songs’ lyrics. This study was applied by using descriptive qualitative design. Having analyzed the data, the findings of this study are: (a)There are three kinds of deixis found in John Legend’s songs, they are person deixis, time deixis and place deixis; (b) Person deixis is the most dominantly used in John Legend’s songs; 86.86%. The writer suggests that the students should learn Deixis as clear as possible because it is the most fundamental thing that should be mastered and the teacher or instructor of English language can teach the students about Deixis by using many written forms, such as songs’ lyrics, poems, novels, drama’s scripts and others.

Abstract

This paper discusses one of the ways to improve students‘ listening ability. Listening subject provides students with the materials of oral communication by English native speakers that mostly focuses on language expressions. It needs the learners to have listening practice a lot, inside and outside the classroom. Actually in teaching listening many activities can be done and many media can be used to provide students with listening activities in order to improve their listening abilities. One of the students‘ favorite activities is watching English Films. By watching English Films students are introduced to the real context of language and a wide range of vocabulary. After watching English Films students are assigned to make the English Films report. Since many people like watching English Films, assigning students to watch the English Films and make the report of what they have watched is expected to be more enjoyable. However they need to understand the English Films itself before they make their reports. They may watch the English Films twice or even more than twice to understand it, before they are able to make and present the English Films reports in the class. In these activities, the students have to watch and listen to the words, expressions, and sentences said by the characters. There are many advantages of these activities. By watching English Filmss students can learn the correct pronunciation, useful expressions from native speakers. Beside those activities, the students are also asked to write a synopsis of the English Films, find the meaning of useful expressions, understand the moral lesson of the English Filmss and present their own reports.

Abstract

Community Language Learning disebut juga Counseling Learning, adalah salah satu contoh penerapan konsep psikoterapi dalam pengajaran bahasa. Konselor menjelaskan aktivitas apa yang diharapkan dan memberi waktu pada bimbingan untuk merefleksikan dirinya mengenai pengalamannya selama ini. Metode pengajaran bahasa menekankan pentingnya bentuk-bentuk bahasa, arti atau makna bahasa. Pengajaran bahasa dilakukan secara pendekatan yang disebut pendekatan humanistic. Pendekatan Humanistik dalam Pengajaran Bahasa melibatkan orang secara utuh, bukan sekedar sebagai sesuatu yang intelektual semata – mata. Ada beberapa hubungan yang diklasifikasikan berdasarkan faktor sosial yang mempengaruhi proses pembelajaran bahasa, mereka adalah rumah, komunitas, pekerjaan, sekolah, pertemuan agama, radio/televise, dan hal-hal bacaan.Tujuan pembelajaran bahasa adalah belajar bagaimana cara menggunakan bahasa untuk berkomunikasi. Komunitas sangat penting untuk pembelajaran dan pemeliharaan suatu bahasa. Bahasa yang menjadi target pembelajaran didalam kelas sangat berbeda dari cara belajar secara alami diluar kelas/ruangan. Kemungkinan peserta belajar bahasa tidak terlibat didalam kegiatan sosial dimana bahasa tersebut dipelajaridan digunakan. Bahasa yang dipelajari sebagai bahasa kedua; para pelajar benar – benar memanfaatkan bahasa dalam suasana dialam terbuka. Penggunaan bahasa dialam terbuka adalah salah satu faktor yang terpenting dalam penggunaan bahasa yang kita pelajari dalam komunikasi. Hasil yang dicapai sangat baik atau paling tidak memberikan harapan yang cerah dimasa depan.
