Abstract

This research aims to get the effect of using Think Talk Write Strategy on students’ writing descriptive text. This research is quantitative research that applies Quasi-Experimental design. The researcher took 10 students of Germany Study Program of Teacher Training Faculty of Universitas HKBP Nommensen Pematangsiantar as the participants of the research by using purposive sampling.The data was gained through essay test. The students’ writing was scored by using Brown’s Formula. To analyze the data, the researcher used IBMSPSS 20.0. From data analysis, mean of the writing score in experimental group is 81.58, meanwhile mean of the writing score in control group is 64.20. The result of analyzing the data shows the score of t-test is higher than t-table (5.12> 1.67). It can be concluded that there is a significant influence of usingThink Talk Write teaching strategy to the students` ability in writing a descriptive text

Abstract

Artikel inimengkaji proses peningkatan kemampuan berbicara siswa melalui Picture Strip Story untuk mahasiswa semester pertama Fakultas Sastra Universitas Darma Agung. Berbicara adalah salah satu keterampilan produktif untuk mentransfer apa yang ingin disampaikan kepada pendengar. Penulis menawarkan metode dalam mengajar kelas Bahasa Inggris dengan penggunaan Picture Strip Story yang bertujuan agar para siswa bersemangat untuk mengetahui dan mempraktikkan berbicara dalam bahasa Inggris dengan lebih mudah dan lebih lancar.Penelitian ini dilakukan secara kuantitatif dengan dua perlakuan kelas berbeda; kelas eksperimen dan kontrol. Sampel diambil dengan menggunakan teknik random sampling. Dalam menganalisis data, kajian ini menggunakan T-test formula. Temuan menunjukkan bahwa ada perbedaan signifikan dari skor rata-rata yang diperoleh dari kelompok eksperimen (85, 46) dan kelompok kontrol (70, 75). Nilai tobs> ttable (P= 0.05) df (58), or 6.78 > 1.67 (P=0.05). Artinya Ha diterima. Dengan demikian dapat disimpulkan bahwa penerapan Picture Strips Story secara signifikan mempengaruhi kemampuan berbicara siswa.

Abstract

Makna non-literal sering digunakan dalam komunikasi, baik secara lisan maupun tulisan. Dalam tulisan, makna non-literal digunakan juga di dalam iklan sehingga penulis merasa tertarik untuk meneliti mengenai makna non-literal yang digunakan di dalam iklan, khususnya iklan kosmetika di Majalah Cosmopolitan. Dari hasil penelitian ditemukan bahwa jenis-jenis makna non-literal yang digunakan dalam iklan kosmetika di Majalah Cosmopolitan adalah personifikasi, hiperbola, synecdoche, simile dan metafora. Dari hasil analisa ditemukan juga bahwa masing-masing jenis makna non-literal memiliki arti tertentu.

Abstract

Penelitian ini berjudul Nilai-Nilai Sosial Asia dalam Crazy Rich Asian karya Kevin Kwan. Analisis tesis ini difokuskan pada nilai-nilai sosial yang terdapat dalam novel dan cara pengarang menggambarkan nilai-nilai sosial dalam novel tersebut. Dalam analisis tesis ini penulis menerapkan pendekatan sosio sastra. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah deskriptif kualitatif. Tujuan utama dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui beberapa nilai sosial dalam buku Crazy Rich Asian karya Kevin Kwan. Dalam analisis tesis ini, penulis menerapkan penelitian kepustakaan. Data primer yang dianalisis diambil dari novel itu sendiri, yaitu objek-objek yang dianggap memiliki nilai sosial yang digunakan dalam novel. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa ada empat nilai sosial yang terdapat dalam novel yaitu Pendidikan, Pendapatan, Ikatan Keluarga dan Rasa Kepercayaan.

Abstract

This research deals with Presupposition of Food Advertisement in Instagram. The objectives of the research are to find out the types of presupposition, the most dominant type of presupposition in food advertisement. This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. The object of the study is presupposition of food advertisement in Instagram. This study implemented applying documentary technique. After doing the analysis, the writer found that there were 2 types of presupposition. The data were collected as many as 47 data which consist 29 of existential presupposition and counterfactual presupposition as many as 18 data. The analysis found that the existential presupposition is the dominant types to state presupposition of food advertisement in instagram. The reason why existential presupposition is the dominant types for 47 data of food advertisement in Instagram because most of the advertisement assumed to be present in possessive contraction or any definite noun phrases attached to the sentence and assumed the thing is exist, based on Yule’s theory Existential presupposition it is the assumption of the existence of the entities named by the speaker.

Abstract

This study deals with The Impact of Industrial Revolution towards Children as reflected in Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist. The aim of this study is to find out the negative impact of industrial revolution towards children and how these negative impacts affect children. This study uses qualitative research method and sociology theory of literature in analyzingthe data relates to the description of the negative impact of industrial revolution and how these negative impacts of industrial revolution affect children as portrayed in Charles Dickens' Oliver Twist. The result of this analysis shows that there are two negative impacts of the industrial revolution toward children in Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist, namely Poverty and Child Labor. Meanwhile, how do these negative impacts of the industrial revolution affect children there are four types, they are: Children Recruitment as Criminals, Baby Farming, Children Apprentices and Physical Abuse towards Children.

Abstract

This study aims at finding whether mapping technique significantly affect the students’ essay writing ability. It is Classroom Action Research (CAR) in which the subject is the second semester students of Letters Faculty of Darma Agug University. Data collection method was done in two ways because the data are in the form of qualitative and quantitative data. Based on the result of cycles implementation, it was found that the ability of students were improved from good to be better while teaching them by using mapping technique, it was from 62.85 to be 69.07. Then, in the second cycle, their score is 77.30. It can be concluded that Mapping Technique significantly affect the students’ writing ability in essay.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the strategy of managing school operational assistance in optimizing learning media at SD N. 173330 Sibuntuon, Lintongnihuta District. Data collection techniques were carried out using observation, documentation and in-depth interviews. Data analysis techniques by reducing data, displaying data, and drawing conclusions. This study uses source and technical triangulation as well as theory to find the validity of the data. The results of the research at SD N. 173330 Sibuntuon show that: 1) the strategy for managing school operational assistance in optimizing learning media is carried out with the stages of budget planning (budgeting), budget procurement, budget allocation (allocating), budget use by prioritizing media, learning materials and tools , make bookkeeping (accounting), supervision and accountability following the technical guidelines for BOS; 2) The problems of the school operational assistance management strategy are: a) teachers do not want to actively participate in the process of making RKAS, b) learning media that have been damaged by the time the fiscal year is running, c) lack of understanding of teachers about the technical guidelines for the use of BOS funds, d) some teachers cannot operate learning media, e) the ability of employees to repair damaged learning media. 3) Efforts to overcome the problems of managing School Operational Assistance are a) communication between teachers and the BOS treasurer, b) managing finances, prioritizing learning media that are more important and will be used soon, c) libraries add reading materials, d) provide guidance to teachers about how to use learning media.

Abstract

Researches on cultural tradition showed that cultural tradition contained various cultural values and norms as the heritage of the forefathers which were based on the functions in organizing the social life of the society could be classified as local wisdom. This research did not analyze the data based on sample or population. It was done this way because the object studied were the elements of kinds of local wisdom found in the umpasa of Toba Batak which were conveyed in marriage ceremony in Toba Batak culture. Therefore, this research was known as case study because the object of the study was only based on certain phenomena. In analyzing the data, the researcher applied descriptive method. This method not only focused on collecting and arranging the data but also the analysis and interpretation of the data analyzed. The result of the study showed that the local wisdoms that could be used to increase the people’s prosperity in the umpasa conveyed in marriage ceremony in Toba Batak culture were the values of hard working, discipline, education, health, mutual cooperation, gender management and the preservation and creativity of culture. It was expected that Toba Batak society, especially Toba Batak youths, keep preserving umpasa of Toba Batak so that they could apply the local wisdoms contained in the umpasa in their daily life.

Abstract

Artikel ini membahas tentang peran wanita seperti yang digambarkan dalam drama A Doll’s Housekarya Henrik Ibsen. Dalam menganalisis isi, penulis menerapkan dua pendekatan teoretis, pendekatan intrinsik dan ekstrinsik. Artikel difokuskan untuk menemukan peran wanita melalui karakter utama dalam drama A Doll's House, antara lain bagaimana wanita menerapkan peran mereka dalam keluarga sebagai istri dan juga sebagai ibu dan sebagai anggota masyarakat, dan apa peranan wanita yang paling dominan muncul dalam drama. Sementara itu, metodologi penelitian yang digunakan didasarkan pada metode penelitian kepustakaan. Skripsi ini menggunakan penelitian deskriptif kualitatif. Hasil dari skripsi ini menunjukkan bahwa karakter utama dalam drama ini tidak mudah untuk merealisasikan berbagai peran sebagai wanita. Temuan penelitian menunjukkan bahwa karakter utama dapat menemukan solusi untuk berbagai masalah yang dihadapinya,meskipunhal itu sangat berpengaruh dalam hidupnya tetapi menjadi sumber masalah karena sikap tidak jujur ​​dan boros
