Abstract

Background: Taste has an important role in human life because of the sense of taste, humans have an ability to taste various flavors of food. Decreased taste sensitivity can affect the quality of life and cause a person to consume excessive taste substances. One of the factors associated with decreased taste sensitivity is smoking. Currently, a new type of cigarette (electric cigarette or e-cigarette) is being developed which is favorable to young people because it has a different content, shape, and taste compared to conventional cigarettes. E-cigarettes are considered safer because aerosol does not contain the tobacco content of conventional cigarettes and is an alternative to smoking cessation programs. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the difference in taste sensitivity between conventional smokers and e-smokers. Method: This research is an analytical observational study using a cross-sectional design. The research subjects were conventional and electric smokers who were students of Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta. The research subjects were obtained by purposive sampling, a total of 32 people who had met the inclusion criteria. Data analysis used frequency tables for univariate data and an-independent sample T-test for bivariate data. Result: The results of the bivariate analysis showed a significant value between conventional and electric smokers with p = 0.036 (< 0.05) for sweet, salty, and sour tastes, while for bitter tastes p = 0.031 (< 0.05). Conclusion: Taste sensitivity in conventional smokers is less sensitive than in electric smokers. Sensitivity to bitter tastes in both treatment groups is less sensitive than sweet, salty, and sour tastes.

Abstract

Background: A systemic metabolic disorder by insulin resistance, type-2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), is characterised by an increased level of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and decreased superoxide dismutase (SOD), which is associated with the activation of proinflammatory cytokine pathways such as tumor necrosis (TNF)-α. This condition usually stimulates inflammation of the periodontal tissue (periodontitis). Vitamin-D3 can inhibit the release of inflammatory mediator and reduce the risk of chronic periodontitis. Purpose this study to determine the effect of the secretome-hypoxia mesenchymal-stem-cells (SH-MSCs)-Vitamin-D3 combination on the expression of SOD, IL-10, and TNF-α genes in T2DM periodontitis-induced rats. Method: 30 rats were randomly divided into five groups; normal sham condition, positive control, SH-MSCs group, vitamin-D3 group, and combination of SH-MSCs and vitamin D3 group. Abstract

Background: Oral potentially malignant disorder (OPMD) is a lesion with a high potential to turn into oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). The discovery of OPMD lesions precedes most cases of OSCC. Sensitive and specific biomarkers can help in the early detection of high-risk patients, one of which is CD8+, part of the cytotoxic T lymphocytes, which have a role in eliminating cancer cells. Several studies use infiltration density and CD8+ T cells' activity as biomarkers in malignancy. Abstract

Background: Orthodontic treatment is performed to correct the malocclusion, and after treatment is complete. The position of the teeth must be maintained because the teeth can move back to their original position, commonly known as relapse. Various attempts have been made, such as using retainers, and various studies have used pharmacological agents such as bisphosphonate risedronate to inhibit relapse, but these studies still used the injection method, which is inconvenient to apply and has a systemic effect. For this reason, changing the bisphosphonate preparation to an emulgel will facilitate its application and have a local effect, but it is necessary to test and determine its effectiveness in inhibiting the relapse. Method: An experimental laboratory study was conducted on 18 guinea pigs, which were divided into three groups: I (control), II (emulgel without risedronate), and III (emulgel with risedronate). The teeth were moved with open coil springs on both lower incisors for seven days, stabilized for seven days, and emulgel applied in groups II and III. The coil spring was removed, and the distance between the two incisors was measured on the third and seventh days. Result: Using One-Way ANOVA and Post Hoc LSD, the data analysis results showed significant differences between the control and the risedronate emulgel groups on the third and seventh days. The largest relapse occurred in the control group, while the smallest was in the emulgel group with risedronate. Conclusion: These results indicate that risedronate bisphosphonate in the form of emulgel influences inhibiting the movement of tooth relapse

Abstract

Background: Relapse occurs frequently, 70–90% of the time, and typically compromises the outcome of orthodontic therapy. Calcium carbonate (CaCO3), which is found in cuttlefish shells, can be used to make a better biomaterial. One example is carbonated hydroxyapatite, which is very similar to human bone tissue and can stop osteoclast activity on the pressure side of the retention phase. This is a factor in orthodontic relapse, which is when the bone doesn't remodel properly. In this study, a test was done to see if carbonated hydroxyapatite (CHA) could be used as an alternative material to stop orthodontic relapse. The test was based on how the RANK-RANKL, OPG, and TGF-β proteins interacted with each other. Method: CHA extracted from cuttlefish shells after 6 hours of calcination at 1000°C. RANK-RANKL, OPG, and TGF-β interactions were investigated in silico using molecular docking. Result: A cuttlefish shell extract containing CHA has the potential to be used as an alternate material to prevent orthodontic recurrence. CHA chemicals can disrupt the link between RANK and RANKL and enhance OPG and TGF-β expression. This induces enhanced proliferation, which increases the number of osteoblasts and osteoblast differentiation while decreasing the rate of osteoclast activity. Conclusion: Cuttlefish shell with CHA extract has the potential to be used as an alternative material to prevent orthodontic relapse.

Abstract

Background: Pulp capping is a treatment that utilizes medications to preserve pulp vitality. Ca(OH)2, mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA), and biodentine are presently the most common pulp capping medications. As pulp capping materials, Ca(OH)2 and MTA are known to have several weaknesses. Biodentine has been created in an effort to mitigate the drawbacks of Ca(OH)2 and MTA. Thus, the purpose of this study is to compare the efficacy of three pulp capping medications in reducing inflammation and accelerating pulp regeneration. Methods: Total 48 male Wistar rats, that were divided into 4 groups, namely 1st control group, 2nd MTA group, 3rd biodentine group, and 4th Ca(OH)2 group. Maxillary 1st molar teeth of rats were prepared using round bur no. 080 perpendicular to the tooth axis to a depth of 1mm, until a reddish color appeared on the pulp. Furthermore, pulp capping medicament was applied to the deepest points, and temporary fillings were made with Zn2(PO4)3. Abstract

Background: Although topical corticosteroids and antibiotics are frequently prescribed to treat traumatic ulcers, both medications have disadvantages. In addition, topical application of the drug is ineffective because it can be washed off by saliva. In order to speed up the healing of traumatic ulcers, it is believed that the oral mucoadhesive patches will adhere to the ulcer for a longer amount of time. Methods: This study was a pure laboratory experiment with a post-test only randomized control group design. The study samples were 32 white rats (Rattus norvegicus) of the Wistar strain with traumatic ulcers on the buccal mucosa. The sample was divided into 2 groups: (1) the control group, which was only given analgesics (5% EMLA); and (2) the treatment group, which was given analgesics (5% EMLA) and oral mucoadhesive patches (a combination of ethanol extracts of green betel leaf, areca nut, and gambier). Each group received treatment twice a day for 10 days. Then the diameter of the traumatic ulcer lesion was measured with a digital caliper on days 1–10 from the yellowish-white part. Abstract

Background: Discoloration of composite restorations may affecting aesthetic appearance. The aging-process and surface roughness may influence color changes. A nanofilled self-adhesive protecting coating has been developed for coating tooth restoration and expected to prolong the longevity of restoration. To evaluate the effect of nanofilled self-adhesive protective coating on the surface roughness and color-changes of flowable and packable composite after aging condition. Methods: The total of 40 discs (15x2mm) and 60 boxes (20×10× 2mm) specimens from flowable and packable composite were used. A half of the specimens was coated by using protective-coating. The reflectance chromameter was used to measure the color baseline. Afterward, the specimens were subjected into aging process by immersing in artificial saliva and carbonated drink (37oC,7d). The color changes were calculated based on the [CIE L*a*b*].For surface roughness, box-shaped specimens were measured in fresh condition, after aging conditions. Results: The color change ranged from 0.49 to 2.31. Applying protective-coating was associated with a significant decrease in the color-changes and surface roughness after aging. The changes of three color coordinates resulted in significant differences for both composite, with and without protective coating application. Conclusion: The application of protective-coating decrease the color-changes and surface roughness of flowable and packable composite-resin.

Abstract

Backgrounds: Odontomas often occur at a young age and are found incidentally in disturbed tooth eruptions, mostly intraosseous lesions. Compound odontomas have been identified as small tooth-like structures known as denticles. An accurate diagnosis of odontoma cannot be made on clinical examination. The majority of odontoma diagnoses have been made by radiographic examination. Odontoma often occurs unilaterally in one area with a single or multiple numbers, in this case, several areas have been found in the maxilla. The purpose of this case report is the radiographic evaluation of compound odontomas using panoramic radiographs and 3D Cone Beam CT. Case reports: A 12 years old female patient with her mother came to the orthodontist with the main complaint of crowding teeth and wanted treatment. On examination, an inflammation appeared on the palate behind the left RA lateral incisor. There was no history of trauma to the orofacial area. There was no family history of unerupted teeth or hypodontia and nothing relevant medical history. The orthodontist referred the patient for a panoramic radiograph and CBCT examination. Results: The results of the panoramic radiograph examination have showed radiopaque images resembling denticles in several regions, was made the case has been interesting to appoint in this case report, and this result was confirmed by the results of the CBCT examination which can show the location, number, and size of denticles in this patient.
