Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the representation of gender injustice in the novel Wigati by Khilma Anis in using a critical discourse analysis (CDA) approach based on Sara Mills' theory. The study employed Sara Mills' subject position theory to reveal how the narrative in the novel represented the positions of women and men within a patriarchal social structure. Using a descriptive qualitative method, data were collected from narrative texts that reflected gender relations, especially involving the main character and the relationship between Wigati’s mother and her father. The types of gender injustice identified included stereotyping, marginalization, subordination, and verbal or nonphysical violence. The results showed that female characters, particularly Wigati and her mother, occupied subordinate positions both socially and economically. The novel's narrative illustrated that Wigati’s mother was forced to accept a marginalized role due to her siri marriage, which highlighted the neglect of women’s rights in a patriarchal society. The analysis also revealed that the perspectives of the narrator and other characters influenced how readers perceived gender injustice by reinforcing certain stereotypes about gender roles. Sara Mills’ theory helped in identifying how power structures and male dominance operated through narrative and reinforced gender injustice. This research aimed to contribute to a deeper understanding of how literature functions as a reflection and critique of social injustice, particularly gender-based inequality, and how it reveals the marginalized position of women within patriarchal culture.

Abstract

This study investigates the politeness strategies employed by Indonesian hotel and travel agent reservation staff in responding to reservation cancellations communicated via WhatsApp by prospective guests and tourists. Focusing on service providers’ responses, the study explores how politeness is pragmatically constructed in informal digital interactions within the Central Java tourism industry. Drawing on Brown and Levinson’s politeness theory, the research employs a qualitative descriptive method. Data were collected from authentic WhatsApp conversations between service staff and Indonesian clients, particularly concerning cancellation messages initiated by the clients. The analysis reveals the dominant use of both negative and positive politeness strategies, including indirect expressions, apologies, expressions of gratitude, empathy, and hedging. These strategies reflect culturally grounded efforts to maintain social harmony, express professionalism, and mitigate face-threatening acts. Linguistic features such as mohon maaf sebelumnya (“we apologize in advance”) and personalized honorifics like Pak, Bu, Mas, and Mbak, alongside informal tones, illustrate the hybrid nature of politeness in digital service discourse in Central Java. The study demonstrates that politeness functions as both a linguistic and strategic tool for managing client relationships and that it embodies the high-context communicative norms of Javanese culture. These findings contribute to a socio-pragmatic understanding of politeness in mediated tourism communication and offer practical insights for improving client engagement in digital service encounters.

Abstract

This study targets a holistic investigation of the types, strategies, and functions carried out by the characters in the 2016 film Uang Panai Maha(R)L and its social context. This study also aims to find the influence of the stages of the film starting from orientation, complication, evaluation, and resolution on the use of types, strategies, and functions of requests carried out by the characters in the film. This study uses a socio-pragmatic approach to investigate speech acts of requests based on Anna Trosborg's theory (1995) to identify types, strategies, and functions in films. This study is supported by using descriptive qualitative research supported by four main stages of analysis by the Santosa (2021) model, combined with Spradley (1980), and Miles and Huberman (1996) starting from domain analysis, taxonomy, components, and cultural themes. The data for this study were taken from dialogues containing the types, strategies, and functions of requests carried out by the characters at each stage of the film. The data source comes from the 2016 film Uang Panai Maha(R)L stages starting from orientation, complication, evaluation, and resolution. The study results indicate that the speech acts of requests uttered by the characters in the film Uang Panai Maha(R)L 2016 tend to fluctuate throughout the stages of the film, namely orientation, complication, evaluation, and resolution.

Abstract

Family is the basic unit of society, and communication conflicts among family members have a great influence on their psychological state and the relationship of the entire family. The parent-child relationship, in particular, often faces tensions arising from communicative differences and misunderstandings. Drawing on Conversation Analysis, this critical case study aims to explore how impoliteness is realized through speech acts in family conflicts between a mother and daughter participating in a mediation show ‘金牌调解’ (Jin Pai Tiao Jie). Findings reveal that high-frequency speech acts like insult and sarcasm significantly escalate mother-daughter tensions, while low-frequency but high-impact acts (e.g., threat and criticism) further damage their relationship; moreover, avoidant speech acts, such as disassociation, fail to resolve conflicts and instead mask deep-seated issues, exacerbating the discord. This study advances the under-researched field of family communication by showing how impoliteness escalates conflicts. This study contributes to offering practical insights for parents and children to recognize and mitigate harmful interactions in daily communication.

Abstract

This research investigated the functions of modality applied in the text of “Pidato Kenegaraan Presiden Joko Widodo Tahun 2023 Dalam rangka HUT ke-78 Republik Indonesia”. The research used qualitative research, grounded theory. The data source was taken from Kompas.com. From the clauses used in the text. The research technique used to identify the data was Teknik Pilah Unsur Penentu by classifying each of the clause elements. Adjuncts, verbs, auxiliary modalities, and clauses were identified to find out the functions of modality. The theory used to analyze the data was the theory of language as interpersonal, especially modality, proposed by Halliday. The research results suggested that this research found modalization and modalization in the text. Modaliization involves a Proposition, namely: (i) Low fact propositional modality is used by Jokowi’s political opponents to spread fake information. (ii) High fact propositional modality is used by Jokowi to clarify the bad issue addressed to Jokowi. Whereas, modulization involves proposal modalities which are used by Jokowi to invite all of the communities to be involved in ongoing and further development. In addition, proposal modalities are used in Jokowi’s expectation for further development. Academically, this research result brings some advantages for linguistics research, such as semiotics, language philosophy, and discourse analysis. Therefore, this research is expected to be able to stimulate other linguistic researchers to explore other politicians’ character regarding to political speech from modality perspective.

Abstract

This study aims to critically analyze the ideological messages conveyed by the President Republic of Indonesia, Mr.Prabowo Subianto. Political speeches are powerful tools that leaders use to express their ideas, show their leadership style, and influence public opinion. In this study, the focus is on a speech delivered by the President of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, in front of the Turkish Parliament in early 2025. The speech is seen as a reflection of his early foreign policy direction and his efforts to build Indonesia’s image on the international stage, especially in its relationship with Turkey. This research aims to explore the ideological messages in that speech. Using a qualitative descriptive approach which applies Norman Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) model, and to support the analysis researcher will use the transitivity method from Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), This method helps break down the functions of each sentence to understand how language is used to shape meaning, show power, and express political ideas. The main focus is on how the speech builds certain messages about Indonesia’s national identity, political direction, and position in the world. The study also tries to understand what kinds of power relations are hidden in the political language and what social or political effects the speech might have. Through this analysis, the research hopes to give deeper insights into how language can be used not just to inform, but also to influence, persuade, and shape public thinking at a national and global audience.

Abstract

This study examines the pragmatic strategies of politeness and expressive acts in Prime Minister James Marape’s historic 2024 address to the Australian Parliament. It focuses on how language is used to perform diplomacy, assert postcolonial identity, and reaffirm regional presence. The research aims to explore how speech acts particularly those expressing gratitude, acknowledgment, and storytelling serve not only interpersonal but also symbolic and ideological functions in high-level diplomatic discourse. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, the study is grounded in Brown and Levinson’s politeness theory and informed by postcolonial pragmatics. Selected excerpts from the speech were analyzed for their pragmatic density and thematic relevance. The findings show that Marape employs positive politeness to foster solidarity and shared authority, negative politeness to express humility while affirming legitimacy, and off-record strategies especially narrative storytelling to reclaim historical voice. Expressive acts such as environmental imagery and geographic reframing reinforce Papua New Guinea’s national identity and geopolitical stance while maintaining diplomatic decorum. The analysis reveals that politeness in postcolonial diplomatic settings functions as a complex communicative strategy that negotiates power, history, and cultural dignity. This study contributes to the expanding field of postcolonial pragmatics by offering a Pacific perspective and illustrating how diplomatic speeches can serve as performative acts of historical redress and regional engagement.

Abstract

Applying the socio-pragmatic approach to vernacular language emphasizes its central role in shaping social and cultural development. The study followed a targeted approach. First, inductive coding was conducted to identify recurring themes associated with colloquialisms. This development was then classified on the basis of the Hymes language model and Grice's implicature theories. Through thematic analysis,                the study revealed how verbal language functions in different contexts. It reflects interpersonal relationships, social activities, and emotional expression. To ensure the reliability and consistency of the results, data from multiple sources, such as media and digital platforms, were considered. Hymes’ model showed how public discourse adapts to different situations, participant interactions, and communication purposes. On the other hand, Grice's semantic theories revealed the deeper meanings of these terms. Unlike Western studies, which mainly focus on irony, politeness, and efficacy of exchanges, this study identifies socio-pragmatic elements of the Iraqi slang.  These elements include, for example, but not limited to, metaphorical expressions of dissent, humor, and indirect critique as a survival strategy in political or tribal contexts. This study shows how vernacular speech processes social relations, transmits cultural values, and delivers social critiques. By focusing on these features, the study fills the gap in non-Western socio-pragmatic research. Especially, the context-specific norms that are often ignored. It therefore provides a deep understanding of the Iraqi language as a versatile form of contextual communication.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the facework strategies used by Indonesian political actors in public interviews to maintain their self-image and mitigate accountability in front of the public. Using a pragmatic approach with Brown and Levinson's (1987) politeness theory framework and Goffman's (1967) face theory, this study analyzed transcripts of the political talk show Mata Najwa, September 2023 edition, featuring Anies Baswedan (ABW) and Muhaimin Iskandar (MI). The analysis results showed that the three main strategies, positive politeness, negative politeness, and off-record politeness, were used selectively and contextually in responding to sensitive, confrontational, or ideological questions. Positive politeness was widely used to build solidarity and shared values, negative politeness to show caution and avoid direct responsibility, and off-record politeness to convey messages implicitly through metaphors, humor, and religious symbolism. Theoretically, these findings expand the development of politeness theory by incorporating dimensions of religiosity, hierarchy, and collective orientation that are unique to the political context of Southeast Asia. Empirically, this study shows that facework strategies function not only as linguistic tools but also as means of ideological and cultural framing in the Indonesian public discourse space.

Abstract

Memes serve not only as entertainment but also as linguistic texts that reflect how humor is pragmatically constructed. This study examines how humor is generated through the creation of implicatures in conversational memes by analyzing the flouting of Grice’s Cooperative Principles, particularly the maxim of relation. Qualitative research is conducted through the analysis of selected memes from the English Memes Facebook page from 2023 to 2024. The research applies Gricean pragmatics alongside Ritchie’s Incongruity Theory to interpret how conversational expectations are deliberately disrupted to produce humorous effects. Findings reveal that flouting the maxim of relation is the most prevalent, followed by quality and quantity, indicating that intentional irrelevance effectively creates incongruity and implicature. By extending Grice’s framework into digital discourse, this study contributes to the broader field of digital humanities, offering insight into the linguistic mechanisms underlying humor in online meme culture.
