Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of a functional pragmatic approach in developing students' contextual understanding of literary works. The functional pragmatic approach emphasizes the importance of context in interpreting text meaning, considering the social, cultural, and situational backgrounds that influence communication in literature. In literature education, this method helps students go beyond understanding the literal content of a text. It encourages them to explore the deeper layers of meaning by considering the relationship between the author, the reader, and the broader societal context in which the text was produced. The research employs a qualitative case study design, engaging literature students as participants to examine how this approach is implemented in real classroom settings. The study utilizes several data collection techniques, including observations, interviews, and document analysis. These methods allow the researcher to comprehensively understand how the functional pragmatic approach is applied during literature lessons and its impact on students' comprehension. The findings indicate that this approach significantly enhances students' ability to critically analyze the meaning of texts and deepen their understanding of the social and cultural contexts embedded in the literature.Additionally, it fosters an appreciation for the values and messages conveyed through literary works. The study's implications suggest that incorporating a functional pragmatic approach in literature instruction could powerfully support the development of students' contextual understanding and critical thinking skills. By emphasizing the importance of context in literary analysis, this approach can help students engage with texts on a deeper level, making literature more meaningful and relevant to their lives.

Abstract

This research explores the sorts of code-switching and code-mixing in a conversational podcast episode on toxic relationships based on their patterns and pragmatic uses. In this research, the linguistic data were evaluated qualitatively from the podcast episode using content analysis, guided by Speech Act Theory (Austin, 1962; Searle, 1969) and Relevance Theory (Wilson & Sperber, 2004) to examine how language alternation supports communicative and pragmatic functions. Five forms of code-switching were identified: inter-sentential, intra-sentential, tag-switching, situational Switching, and metaphorical Switching, along with three types of code-mixing: insertional, alternational, and congruent lexicalization. It explores how these tactics are deployed intentionally: to frame the narrative, explain intricately, heighten emotional resonance, and address a bilingual audience. The results reveal that code-switching differentiates between universal concepts and culturally bound situations, while code-mixing fills lexical gaps and allows conversational authenticity. These tactics underline speakers' ability to balance global accessibility with cultural relevance in effective and relatable content. This research introduces the theory of Bilingual Narrative Pragmatics, which says that bilingual speakers employ language alternation as a strategic tool to enhance narrative efficiency and audience appeal in digital and conversational media.

Abstract

This research investigates the references which are realized by signs within the Masako package. The scope of this research is language in function, which is presented in both verbal and non-verbal languages. The theory used for this research is Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), which is supported with the theory of semiotic for non-verbal language. The research implies qualitative research, and phenomenology. The data were taken from Masako package. The verbal language such as clauses are analyzed with theory of SFL proposed by Halliday, while nonverbal language such as; colours, pictures, photos are analysed with semiotic proposed by Peirce. The research results indicate that the Massako package hires nonverbal and verbal languages. The yellow colour indicates that Masako is very suitable for cooked food. The red indicates that the spice contains chilly, which is not good for baby food. The green indicates that the spice is very good with fresh meat and vegetables. The ideologies of Masako are; (i) the company of Masako wants to share the market with some segmentation by providing several taste and different weight in the packages, (ii) the company want to dominate the market by showing “Halal” so most of Indonesian communities are not in doubt about the material. This research is significant for semiotics, discourse analysis, and language teaching. This research is expected to be very useful for communities and to stimulate other researchers to do similar research.

Abstract

This ethnolinguistic study explores the cultural, moral, and socio-political dimensions of social assistance discourse among citizens of Surakarta, Indonesia. Critical to addressing economic inequality, social assistance programs are examined through linguistic analysis of discourse digital ethnographically observed from January to March 2024, coinciding with increased political activity surrounding the presidential election. Data are drawn from social media discussions, which reveal the complex interaction between Javanese cultural values and contemporary socio-political realities in shaping perceptions of social assistance distribution. The results show that people in Surakarta view social assistance as a political ploy that exploits people's daily living conditions and ultimately violates moral values. The combination of Javanese and Indonesian terms reflects ethical considerations and community expectations of fairness and integrity in the distribution of social assistance. An analysis of cultural meanings identified three cultural interpretations: the politicization of social assistance, economic dependence in everyday life, and moral judgments embedded in the ethical framework of Javanese culture. Governments must adopt culturally sensitive policies that integrate local moral frameworks into aid distribution strategies, promoting transparency and accountability. By understanding the dynamics of these different languages and cultures, policymakers can design more compelling, ethically grounded social assistance initiatives that align with the values of the community in Surakarta and its surrounding areas.

Abstract

Turn-taking manages mechanical speaking turns and creates a cooperative, dynamic, and entertaining conversation. Therefore, creating pleasant and engaging experiences allows participants to express their ideas confidently. Thus, this study investigates how such an experience is facilitated by the turn-taking mechanism in Happy Sad Confused and identifies how markers are used as strategies in conversational dynamics. This study used a descriptive qualitative method and Stenström's (1994) theory related to turn-taking strategies. The data were collected using Jefferson's (2009) transcription approach. The results of this study showed that the interaction between Josh Horowitz and Henry Cavill demonstrated a successful turn-taking mechanism to promote compelling discussion, allowing Henry Cavill to disclose emotive and in-depth work experiences. So, turn-taking also enriched conversational dynamics in a talk show scenario. Markers significantly contributed to maintaining the natural flow of communication and smooth transitions to keep the conversation rhythm. The most dominant marker by filled pauses (e.g., “ǝ:m”, “uh”) was 47 times. Overall, turn-taking maintained interesting communication. Speakers could use suitable tactics and markers to enable meaningful interactions, making talks more dynamic and entertaining for participants and viewers.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the role of emojis in expressing users' political identity in @ussfeed's Instagram comment section, focusing on the types of emojis used, their linguistic functions, and the representation of socio-political identity. Using a qualitative approach, this study integrates Berger's (2010) semiotic theory and Huddy's (2001) Social Identity theory and enriches its analysis with a cyberpragmatics perspective (Yus, 2011) to examine comments related to political issues in the January- April 2024 period. The results reveal that emojis play an important role in enriching textual meaning by adding visual and emotional dimensions, with icons as the most dominant emoji type that reflects various semiotic functions in conveying literal, contextual, and abstract meanings. From a cyberpragmatics perspective, emojis function as a means of digital identity construction where users strategically choose certain emojis to express political affiliation (ingroup) while differentiating themselves from other groups (outgroup). This research provides valuable new insights into how emojis have become an effective communication tool in the digital age while highlighting their role in identity formation in online public spaces and their impact on social interaction and self-representation in the digital world. At the end of this article, the author adds limitations of research and suggestions for future research.

Abstract

In today's digital world, online media significantly shapes our perception of cultural and religious sites. For example, the Saka Tunggal Mosque. The Saka Tunggal Mosque, one of Indonesia's oldest mosques, is a prime example. The digital sphere has profoundly influenced its image. This study delves into the unique digital narrative surrounding the Saka Tunggal Mosque, employing a Media Discourse Analysis approach. Using a descriptive qualitative methodology, we will analyze data from social media, news websites, and Islamic blogs, all through the lens of Norman Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis in 3 stages: Text Analysis (Description), Discursive Practice (Interpretation), Social Practice (Explanation). We aim to understand how this unique digital narrative is created and shared. The findings of this study reveal that digital media weaves narratives that highlight religious tourism, heritage preservation, and Islamic spirituality, thereby influencing public perception of the Saka Tunggal Mosque. However, there are challenges, such as the risk of historical inaccuracy due to the spread of unverified information and the potential loss of the authentic meaning of the mosque amidst the commercialization of tourism. Ultimately, this study explains how digital media acts as a bridge in shaping the identity of a religious place and suggests ways to improve digital communication strategies to maintain its historical meaning.

Abstract

Conventional implicature in persuasive speech acts serves as an effective linguistic mechanism for delivering moral messages and noble values in a refined manner, as exemplified in the Javanese religious song Syi'ir Tanpa Waton. This study aims to examine nine selected data units from a total of thirteen stanzas in the song’s lyrics, which serve as the primary data. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed, with data collected through documentation and textual analysis of the lyrics. The analysis draws on Grice’s theory of implicature and Searle’s speech act theory, focusing on the illocutionary dimension of the speech acts. The findings indicate that the persuasive speech acts identified in the lyrics consist of prohibitions, indirect criticisms, exhortations, and declarative expressions, all of which are imbued with deep spiritual meaning. These speech acts reflect conventional implicature through specific lexical and grammatical markers in Javanese, which encode implied messages independent of conversational context. The study demonstrates significant relevance to Javanese language learning at the senior high school level, particularly in the area of literary text instruction, where students are encouraged to interpret implicit meaning and internalize local wisdom. Implementation in classroom settings may enhance students' interpretative skills while simultaneously reinforcing cultural identity. In addition to enriching pragmatic-semantic analysis of contemporary Javanese texts, this research offers a pedagogical model that integrates culturally rooted literary works into meaningful and engaging language instruction for younger generations.
