Abstract

Abstract Dysphagia is a swallowing disorder commonly experienced by older adults and is often overlooked because it is considered a normal part of the aging process. If left unmanaged, dysphagia may lead to serious complications such as choking, aspiration, malnutrition, and decreased quality of life. This study aimed to analyze dysphagia prevention in older adults through food modification education. A quantitative study using a one-group pretest–posttest quasi-experimental design was conducted. The participants consisted of 29 older adults selected through purposive sampling. A pretest was administered to assess baseline knowledge regarding dysphagia prevention, followed by an educational intervention that included dysphagia education, food texture modification, safe eating positions, and swallowing exercises. A total of seven participants completed both the pretest and posttest assessments. The results showed an improvement in posttest scores compared to pretest scores among participants who completed the intervention, particularly in understanding appropriate food textures and safe eating positions. These findings indicate that food modification education is an effective preventive and educational approach for dysphagia prevention in older adults. Continuous and structured implementation of this education is recommended to support safe eating practices and improve the quality of life of older adults. Keywords: dysphagia, older adults, food texture modification, swallowing education, safe eating

Abstract

Children with cerebral palsy often experience feeding and drinking difficulties due to impaired motor control and swallowing disorders. This condition increases the risk of choking and nutritional problems when parents lack adequate knowledge of safe feeding and drinking practices. This community service activity aimed to improve parents’ understanding and skills in preventing feeding and drinking errors in children with cerebral palsy by strengthening parents’ and caregivers’ knowledge and practical skills. The activity was conducted through lectures on feeding posture techniques, appropriate food texture selection, and recognition of feeding readiness signs, as well as demonstrations and guided practice of oral motor exercises focused on swallowing stimulation. The evaluation was carried out using pre-test and post test assessments involving 16 parents or caregivers of children with cerebral palsy. The results showed an increase in the mean knowledge score from 71.88 in the pre test to 90.63 in the post test. This community service activity contributes to supporting safer feeding and drinking practices for children with cerebral palsy.

Abstract

Cerebral palsy is a neurological condition that often causes weakness in the facial muscles and tongue, resulting in speech difficulties in children. This community service program aims to increase parents' and caregivers' knowledge of active oral motor exercises (OME) through interactive workshops held at Al Islam Polytechnic in Bandung in January 2026. The workshop involved demonstrations and discussions on facial and tongue muscle exercises in preparation for implementing structured OME therapy. A total of 17 parents or caregivers of children with cerebral palsy participated. Knowledge levels were evaluated using pre- and post-test questionnaires consisting of five closed-ended questions related to the definition, benefits, examples, frequency, and risks of OME. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and paired t-tests. Results showed a significant increase in participants' knowledge, with the average score increasing from 82.6% on the pre-test to 98.8% on the post-test. These findings indicate that interactive workshops are effective in increasing understanding of OME among parents and caregivers. It is recommended that similar workshops be integrated into public health programs to support early speech intervention in children with cerebral palsy. Keywords: cerebral palsy; oral motor exercises; speech ability; facial muscle training; community workshop; Service to society.

Abstract

Speech disorders such as dysarthria in the elderly can reduce communication skills and independence if preventive measures are not taken early on. This community service activity aims to increase the knowledge and independence of the elderly in preventing speech disorders such as dysarthria through education and facial exercise training. The activity was held on January 7, 2026, at the Al Islam Polytechnic in Bandung, involving 29 elderly participants. The methods used included interactive lectures, demonstrations and reenactments of facial exercises, as well as evaluations through pre-tests, post-tests, and observations of practical skills. The results of the activity showed an increase in the elderly's knowledge regarding the definition of dysarthria, risk factors, prevention and treatment, as well as an increase in the elderly's ability to perform facial exercises independently. This activity was concluded to be effective in increasing the knowledge and independence of the elderly, and it is recommended to be carried out continuously and expanded to other elderly communities to support promotional and preventive efforts in the field of speech therapy. Keywords: elderly; dysarthria; facial exercises; speech therapy; community service
