Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic creates various dynamics of uncertainty that impact morbidity, mortality, and economic damage. The dynamics of these threats are expanding in the globalization era through networks and national security into a multidimensional sphere that tends to be unpredictable (Starvridis, 2015). Social transformation is always marked with certainties. Therefore, scientific regulations are needed to guide various operations, which functions as a principle in adapting to the quick-changing socio-cultural dynamics. This study aims to analyze the threat of the Covid-19 pandemic and strategic thinking steps in the ethnographic framework of social network thinking. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method with an ego-centric network approach. The research results show that through the network framework, it is possible to see threats that are relatively different from those that have existed so far (mainstream). Interhuman relationships and interactions between humans and viruses in networked societies will create a connection. A strategic step to deal with the dynamics of the Covid-19 pandemic threats is the obligation to use masks. Masks can limit the virus' circulation in social environments, especially during face-to-face interaction and communication, as the mouth and nose are vital channels for the virus to enter and spread inside the human body. Researchers recommend the implementation of strategic handling to precisely detect and handle the spread of the virus as early as possible. This strategy is a preventive effort against further severe threats caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. Additional practical handling is required, including the discipline of implementing health protocols, such as wearing masks under the supervision of authorities.

Abstract

This paper examines the discourse in Loyal White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, one of the most recently active chapters of the Ku Klux Klan (KKK). With the flyering (spreading flyers/pamphlets) incidents that spiked during and in the aftermath the Charlottesville protests in 2017, in the few recent years some of the more active chapters of KKK have steadily distributed the flyers in the United States. Recognizing the Ku Klux Klan’s historical role within the white supremacist movement and its participation in the Unite the Right rally, it is important to understand the meaning behind the discourse and the social act. This is a qualitative and descriptive analysis done on the basis of Fairclough’s three-dimensional framework (Fairclough, 1995) and Gunther Kress and Theo van Leeuwen’s theory (2006) derived from Halliday’s systemic functional linguistics. It is found from the analysis that the KKK tries to appeal to the audience for their sympathy, courage, and pride.

Abstract

This study aims to reveal the history behind the writing of KBG 206, both the development of the script, the author, and the purpose of its writing at the time the manuscript was written. The form of this research is descriptive qualitative research with the type of library research. This study presents the text edition according to the single-text editing method, namely the diplomatic edition. The theory used in reviewing the form of letters in KBG 206 is in accordance with the paleographic theory with analytic model of statics. The result of the analysis is known that the KBG 206 manuscript was written by R. Ng. Ranggawarsita with a writing form that tends to resemble the writing of the pujangga himself in 1840-1842. In addition, it is known that varied forms of buda script in KBG 206 show the comprehense of R. Ng. Ranggawarsita knowledge to buda script. The stamp found in the KBG 206 manuscript shows the importance of the text in supporting the interests of the Bataviaasch Genootschap. Sulukan ada-ada in the text of KBG 206 also illustrate the views and aspirations of R. Ng. Ranggawarsita to the culture at that time, in this case especially the buda script.

Abstract

Studies on the construction of women in Nollywood films have majorly focused on the subjugation of women by the phallocentric African men and the need for socio-economic liberation. Most of these films perceive women as a socially constituted homogenous group on the basis of shared oppression. However, this study intends to interrogate gender relations in terms of the way cultural and development policies are currently regulating the balance of power between men and women in a rapidly mutating African society. Through a reading of select Nigerian films, the paper examines how Nollywood films construct the heterogeneous roles performed by men and women in Modern Nigeria. The paper submits that the dynamics of modernity is changing the depiction of perception of the female gender in contemporary Nigerian cinema.

Abstract

Arabic is a foreign language commonly spoken by many people all over the world; moreover, internationally, it plays such a strategic role. Nevertheless, Indonesian non-Muslims have a relatively low interest in Arabic. We can observe it from the relatively low number of non-Muslims who major in Arabic literature in various universities all over Indonesia. Therefore, this is such an interesting phenomenon to be studied. We think that this phenomenon takes place due to their inappropriate or incorrect perceptions towards Arabic. This study is aimed at identifying various factors affecting the perception of non-Muslim students of Faculty of Humanities of Universitas Indonesia (FIB-UI) in the Class of 2020 towards Arabic. This study employs a quantitative method with a descriptive approach. The participants in this study are non-Muslim students of Faculty of Cultural Sciences of Universitas Indonesia (FIB-UI) in the Class of 2020 with the samples amounting to 53 persons. To process the data of the study, we employ an exploratory factor analysis method. Based on the results of the study, it is found out that there are 5 factors affecting their perceptions such as the introduction factor, the Arabic characteristic factor, the assessment/assumption factor, the language-as-a-religious-identity factor, and the stereotypes-of-the-Muslims factor.

Abstract

Classical theatre marketing has been a phenomenon since the emergence of Greek theatre. This involved various means of selling theatre performances. Although marketing principles in theatre patronage are key in selling performances to a prospective audience, there is a dearth of research on it locally. Also, as observed, some theatre companies do not utilise these marketing principles in marketing their performances. Thus, they end up running at a loss and not satisfying the targeted audience members. To investigate this problem, this paper seeks to trace the evolution of theatre marketing from Ancient Greek to the present day. It also explores how marketing principles can be adopted and applied in theatre marketing in selling Ghanaian theatre. The paper adopts a qualitative framework and approach. The participants are selected using purposive and convenience sampling techniques. Data is gathered using semi-structured interviews and document study for analysis. From the analysis, findings indicate that some theatre companies in Ghana employed similar marketing strategies to sell their plays. This enable them to promote their performances through radio, print, television and social media proficiently. It also revealed that marketing principles adopted in theatre, play a major role in selling every performance to satisfy an audience and generate expected revenue.

Abstract

At the turn of the century, theatre practice embraced digital technology as an aid towards the achievement of multifarious effects in the theatre. The problem of this study therefore is to examine the effectiveness of multimedia staging technique in an Educational theatre in Nigeria using the performance of Esiaba Irobi’s Colour of Rusting Gold at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Theatre as a case study. Through the participant observation approach of the qualitative research method, the study interrogates the challenges and problems of the new media employed in multimedia staging in a Nigerian Educational Theatre. The study finds that due to the dearth of state-of-the-art digital staging equipment that the desired effects of multimedia staging is lost on the audience. It thus recommends the re-equipment of Educational Theatres for optimum positive effects of multimedia staging and concludes that the Nigerian Educational Theatre has the potentials of meeting global best practices in theatre design and technology if adequate equipment are provided for the training of theatre professionals.

Abstract

Modern African Literature grew out of the need for re-identification and reevaluation of the African cultural heritage. Despite that, colonialism and its legacies continue to have a powerful and lasting impact in Africa. Using two literary texts from East Africa, Kenya, reflecting post-colonial and neo-colonial eras, this study examines the validity of the continuation of Ecological Imperialism in Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o's Petals of Blood (1977) and Owuor Yvonne Adhiambo's Dust (2013). An analytical appraisal of the texts reveals that the post/neocolonial nation-state, far from embodying the new hope of the masses, is a replica of the colonial master's political system negating the history of its people and perpetuating colonial authority and legacies.

Abstract

This paper discusses the essential of Semar Power in the puppet play entitled Bathara Kala Tundhung-Surya Ndadari. The play Bathara Kala Tundhung-Surya Ndadari was taken into consideration in conducting this research because it is a unique play, namely the Ruwat play and the Mahabharata story play which were united through the experience of the presence of Semar characters in a puppet play by Ki Manteb Sudarsono. The main problem in this research is how the essence of Semar Power is formulated in Batara Kala Tundhung-Surya Ndadari. This study aims to formalize Semar's power as the holder of the superiority of power in the play Bathara Kala Tundhung-Surya Ndadari. This research is a qualitative descriptive study with an objective approach that aims to explore and describe the essential of Semar power by the researcher as the main instrument in data collection. The conceptual framework used in this research is a conceptual framework according to Javanese Ethics. The results of this study indicate that the essence of Semar Power is power attached to the status and role above as a pamong of Pandawa, the status as danyang of the land of Java through assistance in carrying out ruwatan, and the role of a god who thwarts the Batara Guru test for Pandawa in Baratayuda. Based on this research, it can be stated that the power of Semar is related to the status and role to eliminate all threats over the power of rage, restore the evil power to its place and maintain the stability of the world and the universe, Memayu hayuning bawana.

Abstract

Shadow puppets are very popular in Southeast Asia. The foreign culture that is present in this area has a strong enough influence on the growth and existence of local culture. Stories were brought and spread by the Indians at the beginning of the Christian era as material developed through their local intelligence. Two geographical areas that are unique in Malay culture are important and deserve attention, namely Malaysia and Thailand. Kelantan Malay shadow puppets cannot be separated from the influences inherent in them, namely Java and Thailand. The plays that are shown revolve around Rama's struggle to get Sita, who is assisted by his younger brother, Laksmana. Nasir's play Sita's Mariage Contest deserves to be appointed as an object of study on the grounds that the mythical and magical content is very strong and Malay local wisdom is in contact with Javanese and Pattani localities in Thailand. The data is downloaded from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v= DbA53E3M0Zw. To examine the data, a qualitative descriptive method is needed, as well as a theoretical framework of narrative strategies, namely sanggit play and work on pakliran. The results of the study show that sanggit play, which is the power of knowledge of the dalang, is packed with mythical and magical content and combines genealogy, tradition, and local conventions of Malay (Malaysia), Javanese (Indonesian), and Pattani (Thailand) armed with the power of imagination, intuition, sensitivity, intellectuality, and mastery of cultural codes. The work on pakliran combines ethics and aesthetics that describe local wisdom with the implementation of acculturation and adaptation as a Malay cultural identity.
