Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of zakat in promoting local inclusive economic growth in Indonesia. This research uses secondary panel data of 34 provinces during 2017-2022. The analysis techniques used in this study include the Poverty Equivalent Growth Rate (PEGR) inclusive economic growth measurement method and the Static Panel Regression Fixed Effect Model. This study concludes that zakat is proven to be an effective instrument in promoting inclusive economic growth in Indonesia, with a significant impact on income distribution even though its potential is still not optimized. Unique findings reveal that inclusive growth recovered faster than GDP post-pandemic, and Eastern Indonesia region showed better progress than Java as the economic center, indicating the existence of growth-versus-equity paradox.

Abstract

In 2025, the Trump administration implemented sweeping tariff measures as part of its "America First" trade agenda. While aimed broadly at correcting trade imbalances, these policies have had significant ripple effects on Middle Eastern economies, particularly in the Gulf. The objective is to examine how the Trump administration’s tariff regime constitutes a deliberate exercise in economic statecraft and how Gulf states are responding to preserve economic sovereignty and geopolitical relevance. The methodology involves qualitative research method and collecting the data through documents. The paper distinguishes the U.S. tariff regime through the lens of economic coercion, categorizing these tariffs as strategic maneuvers rather than mere economic adjustments. The results show Gulf states responded with financial market adjustments, export disruptions, and accelerated economic diversification, regional alliances, and hedging strategies. This redefines U.S.–Middle East economic relations, with Gulf states increasingly asserting strategic autonomy amid shifting global power dynamics. The article concludes by assessing the broader geopolitical implications of this evolving trade confrontation for future U.S. engagement in the region.

Abstract

The conceptualisation of religion from the perspective of power entails the state’s effort to utilise religious resources and symbols as proxy tools. In the aftermath of the Arab Spring in 2010, the state realised the threat of opposition from the independent Islamic movement to the survivability of the monarchical and autocratic regime. Hence, this study identifies the act of the UAE government in confronting the Islamic movement and its role in controlling a religious discourse based on the concept of Moderate Islam, employing a top-down approach to form a distinct religious identity that differs from that of rival countries. Qualitative analysis through the collection of information and reference materials aims to identify the history and factors of the development of Moderate Islam in the UAE. The researcher's initial hypothesis asserts that there are three forms of the government's approach in establishing the concept of Islam in the UAE, namely coercing Islamic group, control over religious institutions and promoting the narrative of moderation through various platforms and endorsing two contradicted sects of Neo-traditionalists and anti-traditionalists which have the similarities in terms of separation of religious interference in politic. Thus, this study will examine the concept of Moderate Islam in the UAE and its implications for the legitimacy of the monarchy.

Abstract

Abstract

This paper explores how China and BRICS are emerging as strategic alternatives to the liberal international order, particularly in the realm of diplomacy and mediation for periphery states in the Middle East. Drawing on a realist theoretical framework, the study argues that these platforms offer pragmatic, interest-based avenues for engagement that contrast sharply with the conditionalities and normative expectations of Western-led institutions. Through case studies such as China’s mediation in the Iran–Saudi Arabia normalization and the expansion of BRICS+ to include Middle Eastern actors, the paper demonstrates how sovereignty, non-interference, and multipolarity have become central organizing principles for a new diplomatic architecture. For periphery states traditionally excluded or constrained by the liberal order, BRICS and China provide critical tools to bargain, hedge, and enhance agency in an increasingly fragmented world.

Halal certification is one of the important aspects that can promote the advancement of the halal sector worldwide. Halal certification can be used for products such as food, beverages, medicines, cosmetics, services, and others. Each country has provisions, processes, and requirements related to halal certification applications and procedures in their country. The purpose of this study is to explain the comparison of halal certification procedures in various parts of the world using case studies in Southeast Asia countries such as Indonesia and Malaysia and countries in the Middle East such as the United Arab Emirates and Turkey. This research is conducted using a qualitative methodological approach. The results of this study are that each country in Southeast Asia such as Indonesia and Malaysia and the Middle East such as the United Arab Emirates and Turkey, have their own procedures related to halal certification. These countries also have different regulations or policies, institutions, and types of halal certification but have the same goal of establishing halal certification in accordance with Islamic law. This research is expected to be a material consideration and knowledge to be completed in future studies and can be useful for the advancement of the halal industry in Indonesia.

Abstract

The new regulations from Otoritas Jasa Keuangan (OJK) of POJK No. 2/2024 and SEOJK No. 15/2024 require Islamic banks to support sharia compliance supervision by assigning three functions; Sharia Compliance, Sharia Internal Audit, and Sharia Risk Management. Therefore, the role of these three functions is an essential factor for Islamic banks in maintaining and mitigating the level of sharia compliance risk. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of supervision carried out by the three functions which are assessed from three attributes; namely Competence, Work Program, and Independence. The research data was obtained using a questionnaire method distributed to 10 islamic banks in Indonesia in 2025. The data then processed using SPSS software. The regression results show that the three attributes have a positive yet insignificant effect on the level of sharia compliance. This shows that in the adjustment phase with this new regulation, these three functions must have better competence, work programs, and independence in order to play a more effective role in supervising sharia compliance risks.
