Abstract

The Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt embargoes against Qatar on June 5, 2017 have harmed the Qatari side and have broken the stability of the GCC. The involvement of Iran and Turkey on the Qatari side has made GCC fragments unavoidable. This crisis was actually triggered by Saudi Arabia's perception that Qatar had supported a terrorist movement that made Saudi Arabia invite all GCC countries to blockade Qatar, but among the Gulf countries, Kuwait is the only country that rejects the embargo and chooses neutral, even mediating the crisis. The reasons for Kuwait's rejection of the Saudi Arabian embargo and Kuwait's interest in the crisis will be analyzed using the theory of neorealism and hedging concepts. This writing uses a qualitative approach with descriptive-analytical analysis. The neorealist, neutrality and mediation of Kuwait in the 2017 Gulf crisis because Kuwait wants to "survive" in the GCC and the region, given Iran's involvement on the Qatar side while Kuwait does not want to conflict with Iran Based on the hedging strategy, Kuwait undertakes indirect balancing of Saudi Arabia such as rejecting a security pact GCC 1981, refused send troops to Bahrain 2011, and challenge the Saudis to develop economic zones on five islands involving Iran's presence. Kuwait also engaged Qatar with mediating the crisis in Qatar in 2014 and 2017.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the construction of identity in post-revolutionary Tunisian foreign policy. This research is interesting because Tunisia is the only country in the Middle East that has successfully passed the Arab Spring wave and formed a democratic government. While many other Arab countries did not make it through the wave of democratization, some of them even fell into protracted civil conflict. The polarization of Arab countries as a result of the Arab spring has caused fragmentation among other Arab countries. Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates tried to block the revolution because it would threaten the integrity of their monarchy. On the other hand, Qatar and Turkey in every narrative support Arab pro-revolution groups. This polarization will affect Tunisia's foreign policy, especially since only Tunisia managed to pass the Arab spring wave. Based on the pattern of identity formation, due to changes in the domestic structure, the Tunisian revolution has given birth to the Tunisian identity as a democratic country. This study uses the constructivist concept of identity as the theoretical framework. The finding in this study is that Tunisian foreign policy in two different governments (Moncef Marzouki and Beji Caid Essebsi) shows the influence of identity, in which Tunisia considers Qatar and Turkey as friends because they have the same identity. Even though Qatar is not a democracy, its support for the democratization of Tunisia shows a common perception. While relations with Saudi and the United Arab Emirates are conflicting, they even consider the two as enemies. This is because of the difference in identity between Tunisia as a democracy and Saudi Arabia-United Arab Emirates as a monarchy.

Abstract

This paper attempts to explain the roots of the Irak and Syria Kurdish ethnic conflict by using the analysis of the Broken Windows theory. The theory that was conceived by a criminologist named George L. Kelling and Cathrine M. Coles is trying to explain something small, if not addressed, it will cause something big. An epidemic will spread depending on the community and the environment. Just like what happened with the Kurds in the Middle East. This group received unfair treatment by the local regime, so the epidemic of freedom and having its own territory spread. A wave of resistance continues to be launched, ranging from the small to the large. Finally, something small can become a big issue, for example Kurdish forces in Iraq and Syria have trained troops and they use the chaotic environment to conduct a referendum on autonomous regions. It means something small (the Kurdish Ethnic resistance movement) that is not given much attention, then presents something big (like Kurdish forces in Iraq and Syria supported by the US to hold a referendum). Keywords: Kurdish Ethnic, Broken Windows Theory, Epidemic, Wave of Resistance Tulisan ini berusaha memaparkan tentang akar konflik Etnis Kurdi Irak dan Suriah dengan menggunakan analisis teori Broken Windows.

Abstract

Relations between Iran and the United States show fluctuating dynamics. The historical relationship and cooperation between the two countries represents how the process works. In fact, during the reign of Shah Reza Pahlavi, Iran-US relations looked good and established important cooperation in several sectors. The political constellation of Iran that continues to intertwine makes the US also respond and issue various policies, including the issue of the nuclear development program. The program during the reign of Hassan Rouhani was also one of the priority policies. Until, the JCPOA agreement was formed between Iran and the P5+1 group countries (US, UK, France, Russia, China, and Germany). However, in 2015, the US tried to get out of the agreement because the contents of the agreement did not match the views of US domestic policy. Political constellations and the process of nuclear development are important discourses in viewing the relationship that is being built between Iran and the US. This article seeks to examine the dynamics of relations and cooperation between Iran and the US during the reign of Hassan Rouhani, the reasons for the US leaving the JCPOA agreement, and the background of Iran continuing its nuclear development. The data collection method that the researcher uses is by collecting various references, both from books, journals, newspapers, online media, and other literature related to the issue of relations and cooperation between Iran and the US during the Hassan Rouhani administration and topics surrounding the cause of the US leaving the JCPOA agreement.
