Abstract

Background: Student engagement is crucial for academic success, yet many undergraduates exhibit low participation, poor attendance, and disengagement in General Studies (GNS) courses. Traditional teaching methods often fail to address the needs of diverse learners, particularly in large classes. The University of Ilorin recognizes the need for innovative approaches to improve academic engagement and outcomes. Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the development and implementation of an Interactive Digital Manual (IDM) tailored to the specific needs of GNS students. It examined the effects of the IDM on student attendance, engagement, and academic participation, alongside students’ perceptions of its impact on learning and retention. Method: A mixed-methods approach was employed, involving 1,332 participants selected from 200-level GNS courses across 17 faculties. Quantitative data were collected through surveys and attendance logs, while qualitative data were gathered via open-ended questions and focus group discussions. Statistical analyses were used to evaluate the IDM's impact. Results: The findings reveal significant improvements in attendance and engagement following the IDM's implementation. Median attendance increased by 866, while engagement scores rose from a mean of 32.5 to 75.8. Students highlighted features such as self-paced learning, interactive exercises, and real-time feedback as critical to their improved understanding and retention of course material. Conclusion: The IDM effectively enhances student engagement, attendance, and learning outcomes in GNS courses. Its innovative design addresses diverse learning needs, offering a structured, accessible, and interactive platform. This study underscores the value of digital tools in fostering academic success and calls for their broader integration into educational strategies.

Abstract

Background. The development of science literacy in early childhood lays the foundation for critical thinking, inquiry skills, and lifelong learning. Traditional approaches to science education often overlook the unique cognitive and developmental needs of young learners. Recent pedagogical shifts suggest that play-based learning may offer an effective pathway to foster scientific thinking in early childhood education. Purpose. This study investigates how play-based strategies support the development of early science literacy among preschool-aged children. The research employed a qualitative case study design involving three early childhood education centers that integrated science themes into daily play activities. Method. Data were collected through classroom observations, educator interviews, and children’s learning artifacts, then analyzed thematically to identify patterns of inquiry and conceptual understanding. Results. Findings revealed that play-based environments encouraged curiosity, hypothesis generation, experimentation, and early evidence-based reasoning. Children demonstrated an emerging understanding of scientific concepts such as cause and effect, classification, and environmental awareness through guided exploratory play. Conclusion. The study concludes that play-based learning serves as a powerful pedagogical approach for nurturing early science literacy. It recommends intentional integration of scientific exploration into play curricula to promote cognitive engagement and scientific habits of mind in early learners.

Abstract

Background. Environmental sustainability has become a pressing global issue, demanding innovative educational interventions that directly engage communities. Project-Based Service Learning (PBSL) integrates academic learning with community service, fostering mutual growth and empowerment. Purpose. This study investigates the effect of PBSL on community empowerment within the context of sustainable environmental management. The objective is to assess how active participation in student-led environmental projects enhances local communities’ knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding sustainable development. Employing a mixed-method approach, the research involved quasi-experimental design and participatory observation in three rural villages. Method. Quantitative data were collected through pre- and post-tests, while qualitative data came from focus group discussions and stakeholder interviews. Results. The results indicate significant improvements in environmental awareness, collaborative problem-solving skills, and long-term community engagement. Furthermore, communities reported an increased capacity to manage environmental resources independently. Conclusion. In conclusion, PBSL not only serves as an effective pedagogical strategy but also empowers communities to take ownership of sustainable practices. The findings contribute to the growing literature on experiential learning and its transformative impact on society.

Abstract

Background. Social entrepreneurship has emerged as a strategic approach to address socio-economic disparities, especially in remote communities where access to economic opportunities and institutional support is limited. Purpose. This study aims to explore the development of social entrepreneurship in the remote region of Sidenreng Rappang, Indonesia, focusing on community-driven initiatives and their socio-economic impacts. Method. Employing a qualitative case study methodology, data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and document analysis involving local entrepreneurs, community leaders, and development agencies. Results. The findings reveal that successful social entrepreneurship in the region is driven by strong local leadership, the utilization of indigenous knowledge, and adaptive strategies that align with the community’s cultural and ecological context. Challenges identified include limited access to capital, insufficient training in entrepreneurial skills, and weak institutional support. Conclusion. The study concludes that fostering social entrepreneurship in remote areas requires a hybrid support system involving education, mentorship, policy facilitation, and community empowerment. This research contributes to the growing body of literature on inclusive development by highlighting the contextual dynamics of entrepreneurial ecosystems in marginalized areas.
