Abstract

Purpose - This study aims to examine the influence of Digital Literacy and Information Technology Development on the Quality of Human Resources (HR) of students of the Faculty of Economics, Sarjanawiyata University Tamansiswa Yogyakarta, with Reading Interest as a mediating variable. Design/methodology/approach - The approach used in this study is quantitative with a survey method. The research sample consisted of 95 students selected using the simple random sampling technique. Data analysis was carried out using the Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) method through the assistance of the SmartPLS application. Originality -  This study contributes to understanding the relationship between digital literacy, information technology development, and the quality of human resources in the context of higher education, by considering the mediating role of reading interest. Findings and Discussion - The results of the study indicate that Digital Literacy and Information Technology Development have a positive and significant effect on Human Resource Quality. However, Digital Literacy does not show a significant effect on Reading Interest. In addition, Reading Interest also does not have a significant effect on Human Resource Quality, and does not mediate the relationship between Digital Literacy and Information Technology Development on Human Resource Quality. Conclusion - These findings indicate that improving the quality of human resources does not solely depend on strengthening digital literacy and information technology, but also requires supporting strategies such as strengthening practical skills and innovation in learning methods.

Abstract

Purpose - This study investigates the influence of millennial leadership on employee work enthusiasm in the context of government institutions. The research aims to understand how leadership styles typical of the millennial generation, characterized by openness, adaptability, and a focus on work-life balance, affect employees' motivation and engagement. Design/methodology/approach - The study involved a random sample of 50 employees, and data was collected using a questionnaire. The hypothesis was tested using SmartPLS to analyze both direct effects and mediating analysis. Originality -  While previous studies have explored leadership and work enthusiasm in private sector settings, this research offers originality by focusing on government institutions, highlighting how millennial leadership influences work enthusiasm within a bureaucratic context that is often overlooked in leadership studies. Findings and Discussion - The study revealed that millennial leadership has a significant positive effect on work enthusiasm among employees in government institutions. Furthermore, organizational culture was found to mediate the relationship between millennial leadership and work enthusiasm, indicating that a supportive and adaptive culture enhances the impact of leadership on employee motivation. Conclusion - Millennial leadership has a positive impact on employee work enthusiasm, with organizational culture acting as a mediator. The practical implication is that leaders in government institutions should focus on fostering an adaptive and supportive organizational culture to enhance employee engagement and motivation, ultimately improving overall performance.

Abstract

Purpose - Pharmaceutical services in hospitals are essential for ensuring healthcare quality; however, the effectiveness of pharmacy staff is frequently compromised by excessive workloads and inadequate work environments. Previous research has investigated these factors individually; however, the collective influence on employee performance is still a subject of discussion. This study analyzes the impact of workload and work environment on employee performance in the Pharmacy Unit, thereby addressing a gap in the current literature. Design/methodology/approach - Primary data was collected from 173 pharmacy employees using a census sampling technique via online surveys. Multiple linear regression analysis was utilized to evaluate the hypotheses. Originality -  This study contributes to the literature by examining the combined effect of workload and work environment on performance—an area that has previously been studied in isolation. Recommended strategies include equitable task distribution, stress management programs, and workspace enhancements to sustain employee productivity. Findings and Discussion - The findings demonstrate that workload adversely affects performance, whereas a supportive work environment enhances performance. Workload alone does not consistently lead to reduced performance; rather, its detrimental effects are pronounced when coupled with inadequate work conditions. Performance may deteriorate when employees encounter excessive workloads without sufficient environmental support. Conclusion - The findings indicate that hospital management ought to prioritize the optimization of workload and enhancements in the workplace to improve the quality of pharmaceutical services.

Abstract

Purpose - This study aims to evaluate the effect of economic stabilization policies on the economic growth of selected ECOWAS countries, particularly focusing on the influence of interest rates, nominal exchange rates, fiscal deficits, and debt stock. Design/methodology/approach - The study employs a panel least squares estimation technique using cross-sectional data from six ECOWAS countries—Nigeria, Ghana, Guinea, Gambia, Sierra Leone, and Liberia—spanning the period from 1990 to 2023. Economic growth, proxied by gross domestic product (GDP), is analyzed against key monetary and fiscal policy variables to determine their impact. Statistical tools including panel unit root test, cointegration test, and the Hausman specification test were employed to ensure robustness. Originality - Unlike previous studies that focus on either fiscal or monetary policies separately or do not consider English-speaking ECOWAS countries in detail, this research provides a holistic analysis of economic stabilization through a combined fiscal-monetary framework. It fills a notable gap by examining the synergies and shortcomings of stabilization policies in the sub-region. Findings and Discussion - The study finds that interest rates, nominal exchange rates, and fiscal deficits have positive and statistically significant effects on economic growth in the selected countries, while debt stock has a negative and significant effect. However, individual country analyses reveal considerable variations: for example, exchange rate had the most significant impact in Nigeria and Guinea, while fiscal deficit drove growth in countries like Liberia and Sierra Leone. The debt burden in most countries counteracts growth gains, revealing risks of overreliance on borrowing. Conclusion - Economic stabilization policies in the ECOWAS sub-region have contributed to economic growth; however, the effectiveness varies across countries and policy tools. While fiscal and monetary measures have shown appreciable influence, rising debt stock threatens long-term sustainability. The study recommends prioritizing internal revenue generation to manage deficits, strengthening policy coordination, and maintaining a balance between growth stimulation and fiscal discipline.

Abstract

Purpose - This study aims to examine the influence of leadership and self-development on employee performance, with a specific focus on the mediating role of organizational commitment at PT XYZ, a leading company in the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) sector. Design/methodology/approach - A quantitative approach was adopted, utilizing structured questionnaires distributed to 201 permanent employees. The collected data were analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) through the SmartPLS software to test both direct and indirect relationships among leadership, self-development, commitment, and employee performance. Originality -  The originality of this research lies in its integrated framework that simultaneously explores behavioral (leadership), individual (self-development), and psychological (commitment) factors affecting employee performance. This comprehensive model is especially relevant in industries experiencing strategic transformation, such as the EPC sector. Findings and Discussion - The results show that both leadership and self-development significantly and positively influence employee performance. Additionally, organizational commitment plays a crucial mediating role in strengthening these effects. All seven proposed hypotheses are statistically supported (p < 0.001), confirming both direct and indirect pathways. These findings underscore the importance of fostering effective leadership and promoting a culture of continuous personal development to enhance employee engagement and performance outcomes. Conclusion - The study concludes that effective leadership and proactive self-development efforts substantially enhance employee performance, both directly and through increased organizational commitment. These results offer practical implications for organizations to prioritize leadership development and self-learning programs as key components of talent management strategies, particularly within transformation-driven industries like EPC.

Abstract

Purpose - This study aims to analyze the influence of social media marketing activities on brand loyalty, by considering the mediating roles of brand trust and brand equity at Bank Syariah Indonesia. The research is motivated by the phenomenon of declining brand loyalty at BSI, as evidenced by fluctuations in customer loyalty and a downward trend, particularly in the collection of third-party funds under the Wadiah scheme. Design/methodology/approach - A quantitative approach was employed using a survey method, with questionnaires distributed to 342 active BSI customers. The data were analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling–Partial Least Squares (SEM–PLS) to assess the relationships among the variables. Originality -  The results indicate that social media marketing activities do not have a significant direct effect on brand loyalty. However, they significantly influence brand trust and brand equity, which in turn enhance brand loyalty. Moreover, brand trust and brand equity were found to play strong mediating roles in strengthening the impact of social media activities on brand loyalty. Findings and Discussion - These findings indicate that effective social media management can be a key strategy in building long-term relationships with customers while enhancing trust and brand value for BSI in the Islamic banking market, both nationally and globally. Conclusion - This study also contributes theoretically to the field of digital marketing and provides practical recommendations for the development of communication strategies in Islamic banking specifically, as well as for businesses in general. Abstract

Purpose - This study aims to examine the direct influence of Resilient Leadership on Employee Performance in the local public sector. Design/methodology/approach - A quantitative approach was applied, using data from 100 employees in one of the government offices in Indonesia. Data were collected through questionnaires and analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling-Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS), which included instrument testing, model fit evaluation, hypothesis testing, and mediation. Originality -  This study contributes to the field of leadership and human resource management by emphasizing the limitations of relying solely on Resilient Leadership to improve employee outcomes. Findings and Discussion - Resilient Leadership does not have a significant direct effect on Employee Performance. This indicates that the role of resilient leadership requires the support of other factors to enhance employee performance effectively. Conclusion - The study provides insights that relying solely on resilient leadership is insufficient to drive employee performance, particularly in government institutions that face structural limitations and strict regulations.

Abstract

Purpose - This study investigates the health and environmental impacts of poor solid waste management practices in urban cities across Nigeria. It explores how increasing population and urbanization contribute to rising waste volumes and the reliance on open dumpsites, which pose serious risks to public health and the environment. Design/methodology/approach - A mixed-methods research design was adopted, combining survey questionnaires and in-depth interviews. Field data were collected from three urban areas where open dumping is common. A total of 150 questionnaires were distributed to residents living within a two-kilometer radius of the dumpsites, with 138 valid responses received (92% response rate). In addition, ten interviews were conducted with waste management officials and healthcare personnel. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Originality -  This study contributes to the understanding of the link between improper waste disposal and public health in the Nigerian urban context. It highlights the socio-environmental consequences of unmanaged waste and offers insights into the institutional and community-level responses. Findings and Discussion - The results reveal that existing waste management systems in Nigerian urban centers are largely ineffective. Poor waste handling practices have led to increased cases of communicable diseases such as malaria, cholera, typhoid, and diarrhea. However, the study also identifies economic opportunities in recycling and waste-related employment, if properly managed. Conclusion - The findings underscore the need for stronger public awareness, improved waste recycling infrastructure, and strict enforcement of environmental laws. A sustainable waste management strategy should combine community education with institutional reforms to reduce health risks and improve environmental quality.
