Abstract

Having a Quasi Experimental Research design, this study aimed to reveal the fact whether Mnemonic Keyword is more effective in helping students to memorize and store vocabulary in the short and long term compared to Mnemonic Loci. Twenty-nine students of class IXB (Experimental group) and 31 students of class IXA (Control group) were involved in this study. The Experiment Group was required to memorize vocabulary by using Mnemonic Keyword while the Control group was required to use Mnemonic Loci in memorizing English vocabulary. Right after the last treatment session, the participants were given a post-test to find out the ability of the participants in both groups regarding their ability to store and recall vocabulary in short-term memory. The results revealed that the Experimental group and the Control group had the same performance. Exactly one week after the first post-test, the researcher conducted a second post-test which aimed to find out the ability of the participants in both groups regarding their ability to store and recall vocabulary in long-term memory. The results revealed the fact that the Experimental group had better performance than the Control group in terms of vocabulary retention and recall in long-term memory. This research also revealed the fact that Mnemonic Keyword was more interesting and unique for students during the vocabulary memorization process so that it made them more enthusiastic in memorizing English vocabulary.

The researcher used the t-test to statistically analyze the data. The t - value was calculated to be 6.55. The t- table value was 2.00 based on the 0.05 significance level, and the computation revealed that the t- value was more significant than the t- table, which was 6.55>2.00. The effectiveness of realia can also be seen in the experimental and control groups' post-treatment scores. The experimental class's mean posttest score was 86.51, putting it in the very good category. The control group's mean posttest score was 76.54, putting it in the good category. The experimental group outperformed the control group, it is possible to conclude. Based on the t-test results, it can be demonstrated that using realia as a media in writing, specifically descriptive text for students, is a reference for teachers.

Abstract

This research aims to investigate how students self-regulated their learning in order to build their speaking abilities within the framework of a classroom setting. Since the majority of the study focuses on the relevance of speaking skills, this research is particularly relevant. This study examines how students may better themselves by self-regulating their learning to improve their speaking abilities in terms of smoothness or fluency in a classroom setting. In this particular study, the paradigm of quantitative research was used. The sample in this study was recruited from one of the junior high schools and totalled 33 students. The speaking test was the instrument used to gather the data. Based on the findings of the data, the students had a mean score of 71.66 on the pre-test assessment of their fluency (smoothness). While the post-test had a mean score that was higher than the pre-test, the post-test score for fluency was 81.06. Furthermore, the analysis of the data showed that the value of the t-test was more than the values in the t-test table (12.590 > 1.693). It indicated that there was a considerable disparity between them. Accordingly, it is possible to draw the conclusion that the implementation of Self-Regulated Learning was seen to be successful in improving the students' speaking abilities, particularly their fluency.
