Abstract

This paper explores the existential themes present in Samuel Beckett's iconic play, Waiting for Godot. The paper aims to unravel the existential intricacies and complexities of meaning and purpose in a world devoid of both through the lens of Albert Camus' absurdist philosophy and Jean-Paul Sartre's existentialist philosophy. The play explores into the realm of the absurd, compelling the audience to confront the existential nature of existence and actively pursue significance. The protagonists' persistent inquiry and pursuit of significance mirror the existentialist notion of constructing personal purpose in a world devoid of inherent meaning. Through an analysis of the characters, dialogue, and setting, the paper illuminates the ways in which Beckett's work reflects and challenges existential ideas, ultimately offering a deeper understanding of the human condition and the quest for meaning.

Abstract

This study examined Iraqi EFL learners academic writing self-efficacy and learning practices. The research used purposive sampling to recruit 60 undergraduate and graduate students using a mixed method approach. Participants self-efficacy in academic writing is assessed using the validated Self-efficacy in Academic Writting Scale (SEAWS) and Self-efficacy questionnaire, instructors anonymous grading of relevant writing assignments. Participants experiences with learning activities and academic writing self-efficacy are explored in semi structured interviews. Social cognition theory and the model of writing self-efficacy served as the theoretical compass for this investigation. The research collects quantitative data from pre and post experiment surveys on self-efficacy and qualitative data from interviews to provide a complete picture. Data analysis used SPSS Software to analyze learning activities, self-efficacy, and academic writing performance. A statistically significant rise in participants self-efficacy after participating in learning activities was shown by results from pre and post questionnaire analyses (T = -2.37, p = 0.012*).  Transcript thematic analysis reveals participant experiences patterns and themes. This research adds to the current body of knowledge by providing new insights into how learning activities affect the academic writing self-efficacy of Iraqi EFL learners.

Abstract

The purpose of the present work is to investigate the effects of English language films without subtitles on the listening comprehension of the mid-ability EFL learners. The research study that was conducted used a quasi-experimental design design and both quantitative and qualitative methods which included pre and post-test measures as well as focus group discussions. The subjects also included an experimental group which watched full films with no subtitle and a control group which equally watched the similar films with subtitles. These findings indicate that that the experimental group performed better than the control group in listening comprehension thus supporting the notion that elimination of subtitling aids in directing is attention and helps in the acquisition of inferential skills. The qualitative data also suggest that learners who watch the programs without subtitles paid more attention to the content listening to the dialogues while using contextual and visual context hence probably encouraging a more complex processing of the content. These findings indicate that although, with the help of subtitles spectators are initially comprehending the audio information, subsequent reliance on the subtitles harms the independent listening, which is essential for communication in real life. The study claims that there should be a gradual transition in the learner’s education process from using subtitles, so that the learners will be able to develop their own language learning capacity as well as prepare them for various communicative simulation.

Abstract

The demand for technology supports and engaging students in their second language beyond the classroom has caused an uptrend of using technology media, especially short videos on social media. In this current investigation, a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) research approach is used in order to analyse the features, prospects, pitfalls, and approaches connected with social media, short video use in grasping English language. Altogether, the observations indicate that the students improve their language proficiency vocabulary and speaking and listening as they watch short videos on the apps like TikTok and Instagram Reels. However, there are problems in the integration of these tools such as issues concerning the content accuracy, distraction, and the inconsistency in educational content used. The paper also underscores significant responsibility of teachers in selecting and presenting quality content, as well as developing learners’ digital competencies to realise necessary learning affordances of these technologies. In overcoming these challenges, educators are in a better position to assist the students to overcome the challenges and use the short videos for learning a language. The results also present hypotheses for further research: the outcomes of the study also indicate the conditions under which the number of videos will give the best result and possible long-term effects of its using on the language achievement.

Abstract

This research aims at assessing the impact of Cake application developed and used as a MALL platform in increasing the university students’ abilities to speak English fluently. In this study, the quasi-experimental design was adopted and the participants were 100 in number and divided into two groups; the experimental group that used Cake application and the control group that followed the traditional curriculum without the application. The Speaking Proficiency Assessment Framework (SPAF) was used to pre-test and post-test Speaking skills with focus on pronunciation, fluency, lexical resource, and communicative competence. The scores highlighted significant enhancement of the level of speaking in the experimental group, the size of which substantiated as rather large, proving the efficacy of the given intervention in the context of its practical application. The distribution analysis revealed that the scores are distributed less variable in the posttest of the experimental group than in the pretest, which suggests the likelihood that the Cake application was beneficial in augmenting performance while assisting students with lower and higher initial proficiency levels. Such perspectives point towards the ability of the MALL tools in the delivery of education especially to those in need.

Abstract

The objectives of this systematic review are as follow: to identify and evaluate integration of digital technologies into the teaching and learning of English language and to compare it with traditional non-digital methods. The study conducted in this paper used systematic literature review. This study used structured approach. Research on the impact of digital technology tools on enhancing language learning, with the use of AI-assisted learning applications, learning through mobile devices, game-based learning application. Based on the current literature review, educational technology offers significant advantage including, individualized learning instructions, content, real interaction, and the ability of gaining pragmatic experience in realistic virtual contexts. However, some of the current concerns which are still a thorny issue are the lack of access to digital technologies in homes and schools, the need for faculty development and the costs of leveraging technologies. The outcome of this study shows that digital innovations play a significant role in improving language learning and therefore lessons learnt should be applied affirmatively using the technologies alongside other conventional methods. Being a blend of the formal and the informal modes of learning methodologies this hybrid approach could lead to better language learning outcomes as compared to formal or technology-based approaches.
