Abstract

The Metaphor Analysis of Daniel Caesar''s Song is a research study that examines the meaning and type of metaphorical language contained in Daniel Caesar''s song lyrics. Metaphors are ideas to discuss something, give an understanding of the world, and are used by poets, songwriters, and book writers to convey meaning in an interesting way. The aim of this research is to provide understanding, enhance knowledge, add new experiences, and fill gaps. Qualitative research aims to understand phenomena experienced by research subjects, while descriptive research collects descriptive data and presents it in reports and descriptions. The researcher found 8 structural metaphors (53%), 3 orientation metaphors (20%), and 4 ontological metaphors (27%). According to conceptual metaphor, the most dominant type of metaphor is structural metaphor. Daniel Caesar''s songs are composed of words taken from poems and given additional melodies to create attraction. This research can be used as a reference source for the study of metaphoric language and its various meanings. Institutions can benefit by providing better support and making it easier for students to access resources related to metaphoric languages.

Abstract

The students of class VII of one of state junior high schools in Jombang got difficulty in their descriptive writing class so that their ability to write was low. It was caused by the monotonous teaching strategy used by the English teacher in their writing class. So that the researchers are interested in conducting a study by implementing PLEASE (Pick, List, Evaluate, Activate, Supply and End) strategy for teaching writing in that class. The purposes of this study were to know: 1) the students’ writing ability before being taught using PLEASE; 2) the students’ writing ability after being taught using PLEASE and 3) the effectiveness of PLEASE for teaching writing. This study used a pre-experimental research design with the population of all the students in class VII consisting of students. Meanwhile, the sample was 29 students of class VII B taken by a purposive sampling. The data were collected from the pre-test and post-test of writing descriptive texts. The data were analysed using a statistical descriptive and a paired-sample t-test. The results of this study showed that: 1) the students’ writing ability before using PLEASE strategy was low with the average score of 57, 2) the students’ writing ability after using PLEASE strategy was excellent with the average score of 86 and 3) the use of PLEASE strategy was effective for teaching writing with the significant score of sig. (2-tailed) was o.ooo. Based on the results of this study, the researchers hope that the Engish teachers and students implement PLEASE strategy in their writing classes.

Abstract

Language serves as a pivotal tool in communication, facilitating the exchange of information, ideas, and emotions. Dysphemism, the use of offensive language to insult or belittle, is prevalent in online interactions, particularly on social media platforms. This study delves into dysphemism within the context of haters' comments on Kim Kardashian's Instagram account. Drawing from a qualitative research design, the study identifies eight types and nine functions of dysphemism prevalent in these comments. These include the use of taboo terms, profane swearing, comparisons to animals, epithets targeting physical characteristics, and more. Furthermore, dysphemistic emojis are analyzed alongside textual dysphemisms, revealing a nuanced layer of expression. The research underscores the significance of understanding dysphemism in online discourse, shedding light on its forms, meanings, and functions. Suggestions for future research include exploring dysphemism across various social media platforms and conducting more comprehensive analyses to enrich our understanding of this linguistic phenomenon.
