The result of analysis shows that the free edition of the Ginger Writer application is used for the implementation. Some techniques of rephrasing applied b the tools are: (1) rephrasing by using equations/synonyms of words. (2) rephrasing by changing/rearranging the sequence of words based on the relevant rules. (3) rephrasing by altering the word's form, (4) rephrasing by using the active or passive form, (5) rephrasing by changing the word class, and (6) rephrasing word into phrase, phrase into clause, and vice versa. Ginger Writer makes writing high-quality work effortless for users. Not only adds missing words, completes fragmented phrases, and corrects spelling problems related to the context of sentences, Ginger Writer also adds missing words, completes fragmented sentences, and corrects spelling errors. This online rephrasing tool is considerably fast but teachers and students should double-check their work. To some extent, manual paraphrasing is considered better and, even the best in quality, compared to the automatic ones.

Abstract

Language features used by BIPA teachers become one of essential parts during online teaching process. This study incorporated interactive metadiscourse (IMD) proposed by Hyland (2005). It was aimed at describing the functions of the categories and understanding the ways teachers employing IMD markers in BIPA digital classes. The data sources were 4 online BIPA learning videos. Aside from employing a qualitative-descriptive method, this study also used documentation technique and content analysis for collecting and analyzing the data through the process of transcribing the video, coding the data, inputting the data in AntCont 3.4.3, selecting the target words, calculating the occurrences and average, interpreting the data, and drawing conclusion. The results of this study revealed that BIPA teachers incorporated all five categories of IMD markers. The most common IMD markers used are: ok, nah, jadi, lihat, coba, dan karena, kalau, and misalnya. The discourse markers mostly assisted the BIPA teachers to direct students, to point on the slides, to shift from one topic to another, and to express agreements.  The findings of this research are expected to give benefits theoretically for scholars and practically for BIPA teachers in conducting online learning.

Abstract

This study aimed to describe the meaning of directive illocutionary speech acts in two Japanese movies entitled Peach Girl and Miseinen Dakedo Kodomo Janai. The directive illocutionary act is the most frequently used speech act in everyday life. In Japanese language, the meanings of these speech acts are often misinterpreted by Japanese language learners, so that the meanings of the speeches are not conveyed properly. In the movies Peach Girl and Miseinen Dakedo Kodomo Janai, the characters use a lot of directive illocutionary speech acts. Therefore, it is worth to conduct a deeper study regarding the meaning of those directive speech acts. This research used speech act theory proposed by Searle (1979) and applied descriptive-qualitative method. The results show that there are 10 meanings of directive illocutionary speech acts with their own structural characteristics, namely command (used in polite language form) order (with V~te form), beg (with the word onegai), request (with V~te form), invitation (with invitation form V~ou), deny (with ~nai form), advise (with V~nda form), prohibition (with V~nai form), warn (with V~te form and particle ~ne), and ask (with keigo form).

Abstract

This paper explores the representation of orientalism negotiation in a novel entitled Eleanor and Park, written by Rainbow Rowell. This study utilized a descriptive-qualitative method to analyze the story by applying the representation theory proposed by Stuart Hall, especially the constructive approach suggested by Foucault. It focuses on the construction of meaning through language related to the depiction of oriental characters and how they struggle and respond to the treatments they receive from white people. Operating the concepts of orientalism from Edward Said and the discursive approach proposed by Foucault, this study explores the ideological position of the writer as  well. From this study, it is found that as an American white writer, Rowell shows the negotiation of the orientalism concept. Presenting the white characters with oriental characteristics and non-white characters with accidental qualities, Rowell exemplifies the strategic way to create racial harmony.  However, the efforts to create characterizations as forms of negotiation against orientalism have reached a dead end because the readers are more impressed by the honored class, which consists of mostly white students, who are able to subvert the negotiations on orientalism made by the author.

Abstract

Noun phrases, in either language in general or English in particular, are one of the pivotal topics in formal linguistics. This paper aimed to contrast the similarities and differences of the patterns of ideational structure and syntactic functions of noun phrases in two different text genres. It employed systemic functional linguistic approach using both Ideational structure analysis and syntactical analysis of noun phrases in narrative texts and news articles. The findings of this study show that noun phrases in narrative texts tend to be shorter and simpler, especially as they occupy the subject and object functions. The forms of pre-modifiers used also tend to be simpler (ranging from the use of one or two pre-modifiers only).  The same case occurs in post-modifier forms as well. In contrast, news articles tend to use complex phrase structures (two or even three pre-modifiers at once) which are coupled with other complex information in the post-modifiers. Appositives appear several times as post-modifiers to complete the information in the noun phrases. In conclusion, these differences prove that the determinism of writing style in each genre has a significant share in determining the pattern complexity of the noun phrase structures therein.

Abstract

Oral presentation apprehension plagues people when they communicate orally, especially when they make oral presentations in public.  This study examined the relationship between English proficiency, public speaking experience, and communication apprehension in polytechnic students during oral presentations.  The study involved 62 students from a polytechnic in Sarawak, Malaysia, who filled in the PRCA-24 questionnaire that focused on the elements of public speaking.  The results showed that 6.4% of the students had a low level of communication apprehension, while 71% had a moderate level of communication apprehension.  For 22.6% of the students, the level of apprehension was very high.  The students felt anxious and uncomfortable when asked to give an oral presentation.  The t-test showed that the male students significantly differed from the female students regarding their communication apprehension.  The mean scores showed that the male students experienced greater communication apprehension (M= 2.19 ± 0.52) than the female students (M= 2.00 ± 0.44).  There was a significant negative relationship between oral presentation experience and the level of communication apprehension.  These results may suggest that extensive training in public speaking can improve public speaking skills and enhance employability opportunities.
