Abstract

Matched belongs to the dystopian novel, which is popular in the last twenty years. This genre usually satirizes the established state, which controls every part of people’s lives.  Matched talks about how the government control people’s lives led to the social class conflict.  The social class conflict is essential to be discussed because it shows the unequal structure in the established society. The objective of this research is to examine Ally Condie’s Matched by using Stuart Hall’s theory of representation is to find out the class conflict and exposes the critical position of the author. The method used is descriptive qualitative. The analysis technique is to look at the narrative of the figures, Cassia Reyes and Ky Markham, as the reflection of citizen struggle in a totalitarian government called Society. The findings show that Cassia and Ky have to strive in Society because Society perpetuates its power by manipulating politics and exploiting the economy. This research is encouraging the other researchers to examine Matched from different angles, perspectives and theories to complement the findings of this current study.

Abstract

Kata kunci: bahasa, budaya, lokalitas, worldview, Using

James's Fifty Shades of Grey By using psychological approach to analyze the fictitious character and the creative process of the author. Theory of interpretation of dream by Sigmund Freud is applied in order to explain the causes of ambition done by Christian Grey. Grey’s ambition is caused by the desire to revenge from his trauma in his childhood. There are three factors that make the character ambitious: The first is when Grey uses his violence (BDSM) to dominate his partner. The second is when Grey want become rich and popular man. The last is Grey’s heart emptiness after a woman he loved left him. The first problem is in the field of abnormal psychology in order to differentiate abnormal from normal behavior. In short, Grey's ambitions are caused by a traumatic condition when he was a child. E.L. James explains a sexual lifestyle which is called BDSM (Bondage/ Disipline, Dominance/ Submissive, Sadism/ Masochism). Abstract

This article dicusses the gender struggle of Shauzia in Mud City by Ellis. The struggle implies the gender condition and critical point of view of the author based on the theory of representation and gender oppression. The representation theory based on Stuart Hall helps to uncover the dominating cultural codes which oppress Shauzia as a person while the gender theory contributes to analyze the layer of dominationin the level of individual, interactional and institutional. This study results in several findings as:the cultural codes represented in the novel are giving benefit the man by the power of military and powerful patriarchy where Shauzia finds hard to go out from camp and work as woman. Furthermore, gender theory plays on scrutinizing the idea as individual woman lacks of rights, and influence her interactional competence as well to stay inside the compound. The institutional system determines her exixtence only to accept what the compound has given to her and not more. Thus she is rejected when she wants to go to France. Ellis poses her self to tell the reader that the value of women in Afganistan at war is unworthy compare to what happens in Europe.

Abstract

Micro-enterprises in Indonesia have experienced significant development from time to time. Business people are able to produce various types of diverse products. Micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) are one of the breakthroughs in increasing economic growth in the community. Along the way, the development of micro-enterprises was also followed by the development of a marketing system that entered the realm of digital media. This aside from being a factor capable of breaking the tide of the market, on the other hand, it is also an obstacle for some micro-enterprises. Lack of knowledge in digital and marketing fields has resulted in some micro-enterprises being unable to compete in conditions of competitive market competition. The purpose of the community service wrapped in the Kuliah Kerja Nyata (KKN) program is to provide assistance and training to one of the snack MSMEs in Karangsari Village, Banyuwangi Regency so that MSMEs can know and understand good processed products and digital market opportunities. This KKN activity can be completed well in its entirety. This can be indicated by the achievements that have been obtained, namely: fostered partners already have new product innovations and have and are able to print packaging logos on products. The fostered partners are also able to promote products by marketing through social media. It is hoped that with this assistance and training, micro business actors as partners will be able to become entrepreneurs and/or do business independently and be independent of their processed products. Abstract

This paper discusses the journey of finding sexual identity in the novel Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe. The analysis focuses on the effort of finding the sexual identity. The struggles before and after coming out are represented in the novel, as well as the critical position of the author. Stuart Hall's representation theory was used as a qualitative approach to analysis. The data of this study were obtained from words, phrases and sentences related to the phenomenon of gay and trans-gender in the selected novels. People are still uncomfortable with the behavior of the LGBT group, so it causes violence against groups associated with them. When the protagonist admits to being gay, he is abused and discriminated against by others, like in the novel. By relating the problem in the story to the author's biography and the struggle to establish his own sexual identity, the topic of sexual identity seems crucial to address as a part of this social phenomenon. This research was conducted as an initial research on the LGBT group, which is expected to be useful for future research.

Abstract

This paper discusses the problems of racism in the novel On Beauty. The analysis focuses on both individual and systemic racism represented in the novel as well as the critical position of the author. It employed Stuart Hall theory under qualitative method of analysis. The textual analysis was made to the narratives and dialogues in the novel which constitute racism in their meanings. It was concerned with how racism happens in the storyline. Meanwhile, the contextual analysis was carried out by using related references to supports the findings and the researchers’ arguments. The result showed that black women still accepted  negative stereotypes and became the objects of white people’s oppressions. They were mistreated despite the application of the law on equal protection for women and minorities. In 2000s, systemic racism continued and made it even harder for black people to get the same treatment as the whites. They suffered from the policies, particularly educational policies which had led to the increase of the poverty rate of black people.
