This article is made to show how gender identity is constructed in England and how the naturalized conception of gender is something unstable. Chrisâs portrayal as a dependent man in the hands of women is far from the image of the soldier as the picture of manliness. It confirms that all knowledge including biological knowledge is socially constructed. Thus, the character of Chris Baldry as the symbol of masculinity is questioned in this article. Chrisâ deviation occurs after coming home from the battle field because of shell shock. This malaise has made him forget the last fifteen years of his life. In war, his body is assaulted in the name of masculinity: menâs bodies are expected to put up a performance where values such as courage, fierceness, and patriotism are reflected in physical action. When suddenly performance can no longer be sustained, his gender/masculinity becomes vulnerable. Therefore, Judith Butlerâs theory is used to conceive how a subject gets and loses his gender identity. This application confirms Butlerâs performativity that gender is not something fixed. Key words : Gender identity, Masculinity, Performatifity

This study discusses liberal feminism in 21st century in America. Liberal feminism. The representation of liberal feminism in A Woman is No Man explains how powerful is the feminism movement in encouraging Arab woman in Arab-American society. The representation of liberal feminism in A Woman is No Man is depicted through female characters’s struggle in getting the equal right with men. The narratives and the dialogues of the novel construct the discourse of liberal feminism where Arab women are considered as inferior and Arab men are considered as a superior. However, the liberal feminism is showed through the main female characters’ struggle to get the same equal right with men in the novel. According to this reason, Stuart Hall's representation theory and discursive approach by Michel Foucault are applied as the main tool to analyze the problems. Betty Frieddan’s Feminine Mystique is utilized as the supporting theory to analyze the liberal feminism in the novel. The results of this study shows that the idea of Arab men is superior, Arab women are inferior become a common knowledge and general agreement among society.

Snow Flower and The Secret Fan is one type of fiction novel written by Lisa See in 2005. Snow Flower and The Secret Fan tells about the lives of Chinese women in the nineteenth century where women's position was lower than men. In that era, there was a tradition that required women to tie their legs when they were young then caused them to endure unbearable pain because of a leg tie. By tying their legs, they can get married and improve their social status and bring them to a better life. Legs bound are to be sexually pleasure for men to achieve sexual satisfaction. In addition, in that era women were not permitted to get education like men. This problem was the impact of the Patriarchal culture. In the Patriarchal culture, there is a Confucian teaching that is used as a way of life for Chinese people. The teaching requires women to obey men: Father, husband, and later their sons. Therefore, Chinese women live as a second-class. In conducting this research, the author uses Representation Theory by Stuart Hall. Research shows that female oppression is clearly illustrated in the novel through a leg tie. Lisa See realistically describes the real conditions of women's oppression in China in the Snow Flower novel and The Secret Fan.

This research explores how English is used in the expanding circle: tourism areas in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Although Bahasa Indonesia is the official language used, this does not mean that other languages will have a little share in the linguistic landscape. The total data used were 519 signboards which were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. This research found that in monolingual boards, the use of English was 23.7%, and Indonesian was 73.5%. The magnitude of the use of English, which is close to as salient as the use of Bahasa Indonesia, is particularly shown on the bilingual and multilingual signboards. This study highlights discussion on the representation of power of English in the investigated signboards, which was shown from the number of appearance and combination of English and other languages in the signboards. It is revealed that English is expressed not only for informative reasons but also for symbolic reasons such as indexing sophistication, cosmopolitanism, and fashionable appearance.

This article studies orientalism constructed in the novel of Digital Fortress that is written by Dan Brown. Orientalism discourse appears in the literary works through narrative events and conversations of the Western and the Eastern. Ensei Tankado, a Japanese character, will be presented in this study in the lens of Western. The aim is to explore orientalism discourse in the novel to get an understanding of the ideology interest as part of the Western power. Theory of Orientalism by Edward Said is applied in this study. It modifies Foucauldian discourse theory and Gramscian hegemony. The four concept of Orientalism discourse including political power, intellectual power, cultural power and moral power will be used in this study. How the Eastern subject is positioned by the Western in Digital Fortress becomes the focus. Japanese and the United States in the novel can be related to the contextual condition that cultural domination and hegemony still occur between Japan-USA since World War II. Orientalism in the literary works is a new imperialism. The goal of this study is to reveal that the novel brings cultural domination.
