Abstract

Islamic education is at a pivotal crossroads as globalization accelerates the need for comprehensive educational reform across Muslim-majority societies. This narrative review investigates how Islamic educational institutions are adapting to global influences while maintaining fidelity to religious values. Employing a structured literature review of sources from Scopus, Google Scholar, and PubMed, this study analyzes academic works published over the past 15 years. Keyword combinations including "Islamic education," "globalization," and "educational reform" guided the search and selection criteria. The review identifies critical themes related to curriculum innovation, teacher and leadership roles, technological integration, and regional adaptation strategies. Findings indicate that educational institutions integrating global competencies with Islamic values tend to exhibit higher adaptability, especially in Southeast Asia. Teachers and school leaders play transformative roles in aligning pedagogical strategies with modern educational standards, while digital tools have enhanced learning access and quality. However, systemic challenges related to policy gaps, funding disparities, and infrastructural constraints persist. Comparative insights from regions such as the Middle East and Africa reveal varied approaches and underscore the importance of contextualized reform. The review concludes that successful reform hinges on institutional resilience, inclusive policymaking, and the integration of technological innovation. These strategies are essential to preserving the spiritual integrity of Islamic education while preparing students for global citizenship. Further empirical and comparative research is recommended to bridge current gaps and inform more inclusive reform strategies.

Abstract

The discourse on gender in Islam has gained increasing scholarly attention due to its profound implications for justice, human rights, and societal development in Muslim-majority contexts. This study aims to examine how Islamic thought has addressed gender through various interpretative approaches and the role of legal, institutional, and political systems in shaping these discourses. Using a narrative review methodology, literature was systematically sourced from major academic databases including JSTOR, Scopus, and Google Scholar. Keywords such as "gender and Islam," "Islamic feminism," and "tafsir and gender" guided the selection of peer-reviewed articles and critical texts. The review reveals a fundamental divide between textualist interpretations that reinforce patriarchal norms and contextualist approaches advocating gender justice. Feminist scholars such as Amina Wadud and Ziba Mir-Hosseini have significantly influenced the reinterpretation of sacred texts, promoting inclusive theological frameworks. Institutions and clerics play dual roles as both agents of change and conservators of tradition, with education emerging as a transformative force. Case studies from Indonesia, Iran, and Morocco illustrate how national legal and political environments mediate the implementation of gender policies. Progressive reforms in Indonesia contrast with the restrictive policies in Iran and gradual reform efforts in Morocco. Findings emphasize the need for gender-sensitive education, inclusive fatwas, and political participation as strategic pathways toward gender justice. The study concludes that collaborative, interdisciplinary, and context-sensitive approaches are essential for transforming gender discourse in Islam and informing inclusive public policy.

Abstract

This study explores the contributions of Islamic education to sustainable development by reviewing recent literature on curriculum innovation, environmental awareness, institutional engagement, and technological adaptation. The aim is to assess how Islamic educational institutions integrate sustainability principles through religious values and pedagogical strategies. Using a narrative review approach, literature from Scopus and Google Scholar was analyzed based on keywords such as "Islamic education," "sustainable development," "green campus," and "Islamic environmental ethics." The study adopts an Islamic ethical framework rooted in the principles of khalifah (stewardship), maslahah (public benefit), and adl (justice), which inform the integration of sustainability into educational models. It focuses primarily on Southeast Asia and the Middle East, analyzing case studies from Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, and other Muslim-majority countries. Findings reveal that Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) in Indonesia have pioneered ecological education through initiatives like Eco-Pesantren, while universities have begun implementing SDG-based curricula and eco-friendly infrastructure. These practices demonstrate the transformative potential of aligning faith-based education with global sustainability goals. However, challenges remain, including limited policy clarity, resource constraints, and the need for standardized evaluation methods. These findings underscore the urgent need for policy reforms, community empowerment, and inter-sectoral collaboration. The study concludes that Islamic education, if strategically supported, can be a powerful force in advancing global sustainability, offering both ethical guidance and practical solutions.

Abstract

This narrative review explores the integration of multicultural values within Islamic education in public schools, focusing on how inclusive practices contribute to tolerance and social harmony. The study aims to analyze existing literature on the topic and evaluate the effectiveness of pedagogical and institutional strategies. A systematic search was conducted across Scopus, Web of Science, ERIC, and Google Scholar using relevant keywords such as "multicultural Islamic education" and "inclusivity in Islamic education." Studies were selected based on relevance, quality, and empirical depth.  The results highlight four main themes: curriculum integration, the roles of teachers and leadership, effective teaching strategies, and barriers to implementation. Schools that integrate inclusive values into Islamic education foster students' empathy, tolerance, and interfaith understanding. Teachers and school leaders are key facilitators, while project-based learning and interactive media prove effective in promoting multicultural awareness. However, systemic challenges such as policy gaps, limited teacher training, and community resistance persist. Local contexts significantly influence implementation, indicating a need for adaptable and context-sensitive strategies. The findings suggest that strengthening teacher training, aligning national and local policies, and involving community stakeholders are critical for advancing multicultural Islamic education. These insights offer valuable guidance for future research and educational reforms aimed at building inclusive, pluralistic societies through Islamic schooling.

Abstract

This narrative review explores the development of contemporary Qur'anic exegesis (tafsir) in Southeast Asia, a region marked by religious diversity and dynamic socio-political landscapes. The study aims to investigate how interpretative frameworks have evolved to address modern societal challenges while remaining grounded in classical Islamic traditions. Using a structured literature search across academic databases including Scopus and Google Scholar, the review analyzes scholarly contributions employing maqasid-based, thematic, pedagogical, and contextual methods. Criteria for inclusion prioritized peer-reviewed publications in English, Indonesian, and Malay from 2000 onwards. The findings reveal that contemporary tafsir in Southeast Asia is characterized by methodological plurality, the integration of digital technology, gender-inclusive interpretation, and responsiveness to local contexts. Maqasid-oriented tafsir emerges as a pivotal approach, enabling ethical and socially relevant interpretations of the Qur’an. The use of platforms like YouTube has expanded access to tafsir, while female scholars contribute significantly to more inclusive and egalitarian interpretations. Political structures and educational systems influence both the dissemination and institutionalization of tafsir. However, challenges remain, including rigid curricula, limited funding, and ideological control by state religious institutions. This review underscores the necessity for innovation, interdisciplinary engagement, and institutional support in sustaining a relevant and dynamic tafsir tradition. Southeast Asia offers valuable insights and models that can inform global tafsir discourse, particularly in pluralistic societies. Future research should explore emerging intersections with digital ethics, interfaith dialogue, and sustainable development.

Abstract

This narrative review investigates the application of fiqh muamalah in contemporary Islamic economic systems, focusing on its integration within social, economic, and technological domains. The objective is to evaluate how various structural and contextual factors influence the implementation of Islamic jurisprudential principles in modern finance. Literature was sourced from Scopus, Google Scholar, JSTOR, and other scholarly databases using thematic keyword searches. Criteria for inclusion prioritized peer-reviewed, empirical, and interdisciplinary research published within the past fifteen years. The results indicate that the success of fiqh muamalah is influenced by educational levels, cultural values, income levels, financial accessibility, and the adoption of fintech solutions. Social factors such as financial literacy and community engagement promote public acceptance, while economic conditions like macroeconomic stability and inclusive financial systems support adoption. Technological innovations such as blockchain and smart contracts offer new opportunities, although their alignment with Shariah principles requires regulatory clarity. Comparative and empirical findings reveal that countries with coherent regulations and community-focused financial literacy programs show higher levels of integration. The discussion emphasizes the urgency of overcoming systemic barriers such as regulatory fragmentation, institutional resistance, and educational limitations. Abstract

The Islamic political thought has long served as a foundational discourse for governance in Muslim-majority societies, continuously adapting to evolving historical, theological, and socio-political conditions. This narrative review investigates the development and transformation of Islamic political ideologies, from classical treatises to contemporary reformist and feminist interpretations. Utilizing a structured literature search through academic databases such as Scopus and Google Scholar, the review selected peer-reviewed sources focused on themes of Islamic governance, religious authority, gender justice, and regional variations. The findings reveal that classical texts such as the Siyasatnama and the Muqaddimah continue to inform present-day governance through concepts like justice and social solidarity. Shi'a political frameworks emphasize divine sovereignty through clerical authority, contrasting with more decentralized Sunni models. Reformist thinkers like Jamal al-Din al-Afghani and Fazlur Rahman advocate for contextual reinterpretation and democratic engagement. The influence of systemic factors—including colonial legacies, economic crises, and cultural diplomacy—demonstrates both the resilience and the adaptability of Islamic political thought. Feminist contributions and grassroots activism further enrich the discourse, emphasizing inclusivity and civic engagement. The review concludes that overcoming governance challenges and ideological rigidity requires educational reform, inclusive policy-making, and expanded theological dialogue. These steps are essential for ensuring that Islamic political thought remains relevant and impactful in contemporary governance. The study highlights the need for future research on digital political engagement and comparative models across global Muslim societies.

Abstract

The intersection of Islam and human rights has become an increasingly contested and vital area of academic inquiry. This narrative review aims to critically examine how Islamic jurisprudence interacts with international human rights principles, particularly in Muslim-majority societies. Using a multidisciplinary methodology, literature was collected from major academic databases including Scopus, Google Scholar, JSTOR, PubMed, and Web of Science. Keywords such as "Islam and human rights," "Sharia law," and "Islamic justice" guided the search, with inclusion criteria focused on peer-reviewed sources published between 2000 and 2024. Findings indicate that social determinants, economic disparities, and institutional frameworks significantly influence how human rights are interpreted and applied in Islamic contexts. Gender inequality, religious minority marginalization, and political resistance are prevalent challenges linked to traditionalist readings of Islamic law. Conversely, reformist movements advocating reinterpretation through concepts like Wasatiyyah and maqāṣid al-sharīʿah illustrate a viable pathway to harmonize Islamic teachings with human rights norms. Case studies from Morocco and Afghanistan exemplify the critical role of political will and governance in shaping rights outcomes. The review highlights systemic and structural barriers in both Muslim-majority and non-Muslim-majority contexts and offers comparative insights into potential policy responses. Legal harmonization, community engagement, education, and interfaith dialogue are emphasized as key strategies. The study concludes by calling for more empirical research and pluralistic, interdisciplinary approaches to enhance the discourse on Islam and human rights globally.

Abstract

This study presents a comprehensive narrative review of contemporary developments, challenges, and prospects in Islamic finance and banking, particularly within developing economies. The research aims to evaluate the sector's effectiveness in promoting financial inclusion, ethical investment, and sustainable development. Using a structured search methodology across Scopus, Google Scholar, and DOAJ, relevant literature was selected based on thematic keywords and inclusion criteria focusing on empirical studies and policy-oriented analysis. Key findings indicate that Islamic financial literacy strongly influences investment behavior among Muslim investors by reducing perceived risk and aligning investment choices with ethical values. Shariah governance, particularly the role of Supervisory Boards, is pivotal but faces implementation disparities across countries. Product innovation in markets like Malaysia and Indonesia exemplifies the sector's responsiveness to financial modernization while adhering to Shariah principles. Moreover, Islamic finance aligns with sustainable development goals through instruments such as green sukuk and zakat, offering ethical alternatives for environmental and social financing. Systemic challenges persist, including inconsistent regulatory environments, limited public understanding, and fragmented interpretations of Shariah law. To address these, the study recommends enhancing regulatory alignment, promoting public education, and strengthening institutional collaboration. These findings underscore the transformative potential of Islamic finance in achieving inclusive and sustainable economic outcomes.

Abstract

This study presents a narrative review on Islamic feminism, examining how gender justice is conceptualized and practiced in Muslim-majority societies and diaspora communities. The review aims to identify key themes, challenges, and transformative strategies that define the Islamic feminist discourse. Methodologically, the study employed a systematic literature search across databases including Scopus, Google Scholar, and JSTOR, using targeted keywords and inclusion criteria to identify peer-reviewed articles relevant to feminist hermeneutics, activism, legal reform, and gender dynamics in Islam. The analysis revealed five central themes: feminist reinterpretation of religious texts, women's socio-political activism, intersections between national identity and feminism, cultural-religious negotiations, and internal tensions within Islamic feminist movements. Empirical data from various contexts demonstrated that systemic barriers—including patriarchal state structures, conservative religious narratives, cultural norms, and legal discrimination—significantly hinder the progress of gender equality. Comparative findings across Malaysia, Indonesia, Iran, and South Africa highlighted the contextual specificity and universality of these challenges. The discussion underscored the need for legal reform, inclusive education, and community-based advocacy to dismantle patriarchal systems. It also emphasized gaps in the literature, including limited attention to LGBTQ+ voices, digital activism, and ecofeminism. The study concludes that Islamic feminism requires an integrated strategy rooted in education, cultural engagement, and inclusive theology to create equitable societies.
