Abstract

This narrative review examines recent methodological developments in Islamic Studies, focusing on how traditional epistemologies intersect with contemporary research practices. The study aims to analyze key innovations and contextual influences shaping the evolution of methodology in education, finance, exegesis, and environmental ethics. Literature was collected from multiple academic databases including Scopus, SpringerLink, Google Scholar, and Web of Science using targeted keywords such as "Methodology in Islamic Studies" and "Interdisciplinary Islamic Research." Selection criteria emphasized peer-reviewed works published in the last 15 years with methodological transparency and relevance to Islamic epistemology. Findings indicate a growing trend toward methodological pluralism, with themes including multicultural integration in Islamic pedagogy, expanded interpretive authority in Qur'anic studies, empirical approaches in Islamic finance, and ethical models addressing global crises. These developments reflect a significant departure from rigid traditionalism and a move toward inclusive, data-informed, and socially engaged Islamic scholarship. The study discusses how socio-cultural contexts and institutional policies influence methodological choices, revealing gaps in digital integration and participatory research. It recommends broader adoption of interdisciplinary, technology-enhanced, and community-rooted approaches. The review concludes that sustainable progress in Islamic Studies will depend on strategic reforms in educational policy, cross-sector collaboration, and an ongoing commitment to methodological innovation.

Abstract

This narrative review examines the evolving landscape of marriage and divorce in Islamic contexts, with a focus on gender equity, legal interpretation, and socio-cultural influences. The study aims to understand the systemic barriers faced by women in initiating divorce and how legal, educational, and institutional reforms can address these challenges. Utilizing sources from Scopus, Google Scholar, JSTOR, and SpringerLink, the review analyzed literature published over the past fifteen years using keywords such as "Islamic marriage," "Islamic divorce," "fiqh," and "gender equity in Islam." The findings reveal that women often face legal and social obstacles in accessing divorce, compounded by economic dependency, limited legal knowledge, and gender-biased interpretations of Islamic law. Studies highlight the impact of educational interventions like fiqh munakahat, feminist legal reinterpretation, and national policy reforms in improving women's rights. Examples from India, Morocco, and Malaysia illustrate how legal innovation and inclusive practices can promote gender justice. The discussion emphasizes the need for systemic reforms that include educational restructuring, economic support, and protective legislation against domestic violence. In conclusion, the review advocates for context-sensitive and justice-centered reforms in Islamic family law. Emphasis is placed on legal empowerment, economic equity, and gender-sensitive interpretation of Sharia to support more equitable marital outcomes. Future research should expand in scope and methodology to ensure broader applicability and sustained social impact.

Abstract

This study presents a comprehensive narrative review of the enduring contributions of Islamic civilization, focusing on intellectual innovation, institutional development, cultural expression, and global influence. The review aims to synthesize literature across disciplines to understand how Islamic heritage continues to shape modern science, governance, education, and intercultural exchange. Methodologically, the review employed purposive literature selection from databases such as Scopus and Google Scholar using key terms like "Islamic Civilization," "Islamic History," and "Muslim Institutions." Inclusion criteria focused on studies offering historical insight, critical analysis, and contemporary relevance. The findings demonstrate that Islamic civilization has profoundly influenced modern scientific thought, educational systems, and administrative models. Institutions like Bait al-Hikmah and Al-Azhar played critical roles in knowledge production and dissemination. The review also identifies the adverse impacts of colonialism, which disrupted traditional Islamic structures, and explores the resurgence of Islamic intellectualism through digital tools and interdisciplinary approaches. Cultural and educational policies in Muslim-majority nations increasingly reflect efforts to reconcile modern governance with Islamic values. This synthesis confirms that Islamic civilization provides foundational frameworks for addressing current global challenges. Emphasizing the revival of traditional knowledge systems and inclusive governance offers pathways to sustainable development and intercultural harmony. The study calls for integrative policy reforms and continued research on digital knowledge dissemination and postcolonial Islamic thought.

Abstract

This narrative review explores the interplay between social, economic, and policy dimensions in fostering adaptive and sustainable Islamic civilizations. Anchored in Islamic ethical principles, the study examines how collective identity, economic development, and value-driven governance shape societal resilience. Utilizing a comprehensive literature review method, the analysis synthesizes empirical, historical, and policy-based findings from various geographical and cultural contexts. Results show that social cohesion, facilitated by family structures and religious values, plays a critical role in enhancing psychological and community resilience. Economically, equitable resource distribution and infrastructural investment emerge as key determinants of public service quality. On the policy front, governance models rooted in Islamic justice significantly enhance accountability and public trust. The discussion highlights that the integration of these dimensions forms a systemic framework for sustainable development. It emphasizes the importance of overcoming institutional inefficiencies, economic disparities, and limited public engagement through contextually adaptive, interdisciplinary policies. The study underscores the urgency of aligning traditional values with modern systems and recommends continuous participatory evaluation as a best practice. These insights contribute to advancing holistic frameworks for Islamic civilization-building and propose directions for further research on context-specific implementations of integrative development strategies.

Abstract

This study presents a narrative review exploring the transformation of Islamic preaching (da'wah) in the digital age. It aims to synthesize contemporary literature addressing how digital platforms have reshaped religious communication, promoting inclusivity, moderation, and interactivity. The methodology involved reviewing peer-reviewed studies from both local and international contexts, focusing on themes such as digital literacy, visual communication, algorithmic engagement, and institutional strategies. The findings reveal a consistent shift from monologic to dialogic communication, highlighting the effectiveness of media such as video, podcasts, and social media in engaging younger audiences. The review underscores the importance of algorithmic transparency, credible content, and leadership adaptability in shaping trust and message reception. Moreover, systemic factors including digital infrastructure, regulatory support, and socio-economic conditions significantly affect the dissemination and impact of digital da'wah. Interdisciplinary strategies that combine religious values, communication theory, and technology innovation are emphasized as essential for sustainable engagement. This study concludes by recommending stronger regulatory frameworks, investments in digital infrastructure, and inclusive educational policies to overcome current barriers. Future research should explore the long-term social effects of digital da'wah and examine how local cultural elements can be integrated with global communication strategies to foster cohesive religious discourse. The results advocate for a more context-sensitive and ethically grounded approach to digital Islamic communication in the 21st century.

Abstract

This study presents a comprehensive narrative review examining the intersection of Islamic education and cultural identity construction in the context of global modernity. The research investigates how Islamic educational institutions navigate the tension between maintaining traditional religious values and adapting to contemporary global demands. Employing a narrative review method, the study synthesizes evidence from diverse empirical studies and theoretical frameworks that explore both structural and pedagogical dimensions of identity formation. Key findings indicate that Islamic identity is not a static entity but a dynamic construct shaped through selective adaptation, where traditional and modern elements coexist. Educational institutions such as pesantren and Islamic universities employ formal curricula alongside hidden curricula, which together shape students' values and beliefs. However, systemic challenges such as bureaucratic rigidity, limited infrastructure, and misaligned policies hinder effective identity development. The discussion integrates postcolonial and interdisciplinary theories to critique Western-centric educational models and advocate for culturally grounded approaches. The study concludes that responsive educational reforms, inclusive stakeholder collaboration, and strategic digital integration are crucial for sustaining Islamic identity in the modern era. This review underscores the need for culturally sensitive policy frameworks and calls for future research to explore hybrid educational models across diverse sociopolitical contexts.

Abstract

This study offers a comprehensive narrative review of the evolving relationship between Islamic philosophy and Western modernity. It aims to explore how Muslim intellectuals respond to the challenges of modern epistemology and secularism by reinterpreting classical Islamic concepts. The review applies a structured methodology involving major academic databases such as Scopus, PubMed, and Google Scholar, employing keywords like "Islamic philosophy," "modernity," and "identity formation." Articles were selected based on peer-reviewed credibility, conceptual relevance, and thematic alignment with the focus on philosophical responses to modernity. Findings reveal that while dominant narratives portray Islam and modernity as dichotomous, contemporary scholars propose integrative models, such as Taha Abderrahman's trusteeship paradigm and reinterpretations of tawḥīd, ʿ aql, and fanā’. These concepts are adapted to address the ethical and epistemological crises brought on by secularism and postcolonial identity fragmentation. The discussion also identifies colonialism, global modernism, and identity crises as systemic barriers that shape the discourse. In response, scholars emphasize educational reform, legal reinterpretation, interfaith and inter-disciplinary dialogue, and the revitalization of traditional epistemologies as critical interventions. This study concludes that dynamic engagement with modernity through the lens of Islamic tradition can foster inclusive intellectual frameworks and social cohesion. It recommends further research on the implementation and impact of these reformist strategies, highlighting the value of integrating classical Islamic values into modern academic and sociopolitical structures.

Abstract

Islamic education has emerged as a critical avenue for supporting mental health through its integration of spiritual values and character formation. This study employed a narrative review method to synthesize findings from scholarly literature on the effectiveness of Islamic educational curricula and spiritual interventions in enhancing students' psychological resilience. Data sources included peer-reviewed articles exploring the impact of spiritual practices, such as dhikr and expressive writing, within formal Islamic schooling and pesantren contexts. Findings reveal that Islamic education frameworks—when designed holistically—contribute significantly to reducing stress, anxiety, and depression symptoms among students. Interventions rooted in Islamic spirituality not only foster emotional well-being but also build internal coping mechanisms, especially when supported by community and family involvement. However, systemic limitations—such as a lack of teacher training, rigid curricula, and policy fragmentation—diminish the scalability of such programs. This review advocates for the integration of faith-based mental health interventions into national education and health policies. It recommends increased investment in teacher training, the development of interdisciplinary teams, and the use of digital platforms for broader outreach. Future research should investigate long-term outcomes and adapt models for minority and urban settings. The synthesis confirms that Islamic education provides a culturally embedded and sustainable model for mental health promotion in Muslim-majority contexts

Abstract

This narrative review explores recent innovations and systemic reforms in assessment practices within Islamic education, focusing on student-centered approaches, digital integration, competency-based evaluation, and the influence of cultural-religious values. The study employs a structured methodology involving database searches (Scopus, ERIC, Google Scholar), Boolean keyword combinations, and rigorous inclusion-exclusion criteria. The review synthesizes empirical findings from peer-reviewed literature, analyzing trends and best practices across global Islamic educational contexts. Key results indicate that authentic and formative assessments enhance student engagement and reflective learning. Digital tools, though unevenly adopted, improve efficiency and access. Competency-based reforms support a holistic appraisal of cognitive, affective, and spiritual dimensions of learning. Meanwhile, diverse interpretations of Islamic values lead to varied assessment practices across regions. Systemic enablers such as government policy, institutional frameworks, and continuous teacher training—especially through models like Lesson Study and self-assessment—are pivotal to successful implementation. Despite these advancements, challenges remain in digital infrastructure, educator readiness, and policy alignment. This review calls for comprehensive, culturally grounded, and scalable reforms, recommending greater investment in capacity-building and adaptive policy design. It underscores that learner-centered and ethically aligned assessments are essential to meet the pedagogical goals of Islamic education in the 21st century.
