Abstract

This article examines the role of Bale-bale in the socio-historical landscape of various rural communities in Indonesia. Beyond its basic function as a place of rest, this traditional pavilion is discussed through a sociological paradigm in the context of public spaces that played a vital role in the dialectic of communal life in the past. This study uses qualitative methods through historical and ethnographic literature reviews, which aim to reveal the dynamics of the Bale-bale as a multifunctional space. The results show that historically, the Bale-bale facilitated daily social interactions, served as a vehicle for information and deliberation, was a center of economic activity, and was a space for cultural practices such as the transmission of local knowledge and values. Its open and accessible architectural design represents the principles of togetherness, mutual cooperation, and transparency. Learning from the past, the role of the social institution known as Bale-bale can be reflected upon in the modern era to provide a perspective on the value of conceptualizing participatory and sustainable public spaceshome

Abstract

Abstract This study examines the role of make-up as a social strategy through which women construct and negotiate the beauty premium within contemporary professional settings. Using a literature review approach, this research aims to analyze how make-up contributes to the formation of the beauty premium and to explain how it functions as symbolic capital within Bourdieu’s theoretical framework. The findings indicate that aesthetic attributes can acquire social legitimacy, serve as a basis for competency attribution, and facilitate access to professional networks, informal workplace interactions, and promotion opportunities. Make-up also emerges as a convertible form of capital that can generate economic returns, including higher income, sales performance, and client-driven compensation. Overall, this study demonstrates that make-up functions as a strategic instrument that strengthens women’s positionality within competitive labor environments, while simultaneously revealing the persistence of gendered biases in professional evaluation. The beauty premium thus illustrates how bodily aesthetics remain a key arena of symbolic negotiation that shapes women’s social and economic mobility in modern workplaces.

Abstract

One interesting urban phenomenon is urbanization and its resulting impacts, often neglecting the function of public space for the sake of motorized vehicles. This results in reduced social interaction and local economic opportunities. Therefore, the Car Free Day program exists as a form of tactical urbanism to reclaim temporary street space by transforming it from a transportation corridor into a public space filled with activity. This article analyzes the practices of social interaction and economic activity that occur in this area, as well as the perceptions of visitors and business owners regarding the meaning of this public space. Data collection techniques were carried out through observation, interviews, and documentation. The results of the study indicate that the practice of utilizing space on the Boulevard highway has created a new socio-economic ecosystem in Makassar City. This government program also motivates the restoration of the social function of the road and forms a form of local economic empowerment. The findings of this study can even serve as recommendations for the city government for sustainable public space planning oriented towards fulfilling the social rights of city residents.

Abstract

The increasing frequency and impact of flooding in urban areas has created an urgent need for a rapid, accurate, and participatory information and mitigation coordination system. Amidst these conditions, social media has emerged as a potential tool to accelerate the dissemination of disaster information, raise public awareness, and support real-time response coordination. This study aims to assess the level of social media utilization by the public and government in Makassar City and to assess its effectiveness in disseminating information and coordinating flood mitigation. The study used a qualitative approach with a case study method. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and observations. The results indicate that social media utilization in Makassar is relatively high, with platforms such as Facebook and Instagram serving as primary channels for disaster communication. Policymakers actively use official accounts to disseminate early warnings, mitigation guidance, aid post locations, and maps of affected areas, ensuring official information reaches the public before traditional media dissemination. Meanwhile, residents use social media to report flood locations, road and organizational conditions, logistical needs, and emergency situations, enabling a more rapid community and institutional response. The speed of information dissemination through social media has been proven to be higher than conventional media, and the level of public engagement is an indicator that mitigation and warning messages resonate and are widely disseminated.

Abstract

This research was conducted in the Pengkasalu community in Kaili Village, West Suli District, Luwu, South Sulawesi. The Pengkasalu community is a transitional mountain community. It is called a transitional mountain community because the Pengkasalu area is located at the foot of a mountain, and transitional because its people are touched by modern culture but still bound by traditional values. This research employed a qualitative, descriptive approach. The results indicate that the Pengkasalu community is located at the foot of a mountain, isolated from outside activity centers. Its livelihood is farming. However, along with social changes, the community has experienced social problems (secularism, a pragmatic life orientation, and a distance from traditional and religious values) that have long been inherent in the local cultural heritage.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the concept of Pancasila-based character education as a pillar of national identity, strategies for implementing Pancasila-based character education, challenges in implementing character education in the global era, as well as solutions and steps to strengthen national identity. The research method used is descriptive research with a literature review (library research). The research activities were carried out by collecting information and data with the help of various available materials. The results of the study show that Pancasila-based character education is very relevant in a multicultural context. The values of tolerance, unity, and deliberation taught in Pancasila can be used as a foundation for maintaining diversity. Indonesian national identity is not only determined by one culture, but by a mutual agreement to live based on Pancasila values. Within this framework, character education can be directed towards fostering a sense of pride in diversity while strengthening a sense of unity. Thus, national identity is not only understood symbolically, but also manifested in everyday attitudes and behaviors in society. The strategy for implementing Pancasila-based character education is curriculum integration, whereby Pancasila values must be incorporated into subjects and everyday educational practices.
