Abstract

Robotic systems are increasingly important across modern technological and industrial sectors, yet their nonlinear dynamics and demanding operational requirements continue to challenge conventional control approaches. Linear controllers may not adequately manage such systems, whereas nonlinear controllers are often complex to implement. This study proposes and evaluates a Fractional-Order Proportional–Integral–Derivative (FPID) controller for a two-link planar robot and compares its performance with that of a conventional Proportional–Integral–Derivative (PID) controller. The analytical system model was adapted from Nazif et al. (2023), with frictional disturbance incorporated into the evaluation. Sinusoidal and step-response simulations were conducted using MATLAB/Simulink. Under sinusoidal input, the FPID controller improved tracking accuracy by 5% for Link 1 and 18% for Link 2 relative to the PID controller. Under step input, it reduced overshoot by 44% and 38%, improved settling time by 58% and 67%, and increased accuracy by 23% and 24% for Links 1 and 2, respectively. These results demonstrate that the FPID control scheme provides greater accuracy, faster response, lower overshoot, and more robust performance than the conventional PID scheme. The study establishes FPID control as a suitable approach for improving the dynamic performance of two-link planar robots under frictional disturbance and provides a basis for further controller refinement to achieve additional performance gains.

Abstract

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection remains a major global public health concern, particularly in Nigeria. Interferon gamma (IFN-γ), a critical cytokine in antiviral immunity, may influence disease progression and immune regulation. This study assessed plasma IFN-γ levels among adults with HBV infection and examined their associations with sociodemographic characteristics. A hospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted at Sir Yahaya Memorial Hospital in Birnin Kebbi, involving 400 adults screened for hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg). Plasma IFN-γ concentrations in HBsAg-positive participants were quantified using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), while sociodemographic data were analyzed using SPSS version 23, with statistical significance set at p ≤ 0.05. Of the 400 participants, 170 (42.5%) tested positive for HBsAg. The highest prevalence was observed among participants aged 20–29 years (52.9%) and males (64.8%), while students (26.5%) and civil servants (24.8%) recorded the highest occupational prevalence. Mean plasma IFN-γ levels were slightly higher in females (8.02 ± 2.46 pg/mL) than in males (7.89 ± 2.49 pg/mL), although the difference was not statistically significant (p ≥ 0.05). No significant correlations were found between IFN-γ levels and age or occupation. The findings demonstrate a high prevalence of HBV infection among young adults, particularly males, while plasma IFN-γ concentrations did not vary significantly across the examined sociodemographic groups. This study provides context-specific evidence on HBV prevalence and cytokine profiles in Kebbi State and underscores the need for youth-focused HBV education and vaccination programs.

Abstract

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) remains a major global health concern, with viral genetic diversity playing an important role in immune evasion and disease persistence. Interleukin-35 (IL-35) is a potent immunosuppressive cytokine that may facilitate HBV persistence; however, its relationship with HBV genotypic variation remains insufficiently understood. This study investigated the association between HBV genotypes and serum IL-35 concentrations among patients with HBV infection. A total of 150 participants were enrolled, comprising 60 patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB), 60 inactive HBV carriers, and 30 healthy controls. HBV genotypes were identified using polymerase chain reaction-based methods, while serum IL-35 concentrations were quantified using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Serum IL-35 concentrations were significantly higher among patients with CHB (85.4 ± 12.3 pg/mL) than among healthy controls (p < 0.001). Patients infected with HBV genotype C also exhibited significantly higher IL-35 concentrations than those infected with genotype D (p = 0.021). Furthermore, serum IL-35 concentrations were strongly and positively correlated with HBV DNA viral load. These findings indicate that HBV genotype C is associated with a stronger IL-35-mediated immunosuppressive response, which may contribute to viral chronicity and more severe clinical outcomes. This study provides evidence of genotype-specific immune modulation in HBV infection and highlights the potential relevance of IL-35 in evaluating viral persistence and disease progression.

Abstract

The historiography of architecture and urbanism in Latin America has evolved from an initial emphasis on inventory toward critical interpretation of the complexities underlying regional modernity. This article examines the persistent dialectical tension between the assimilation of exogenous models and the construction of a distinct Latin American identity, with particular attention to the national-modern period (1929–1939), when pavilions at international expositions functioned as prominent instruments of self-representation and avant-garde expression. It critically analyzes how accelerated and disordered urban growth has produced fragmented urbanization and pronounced socio-spatial segregation in emerging peripheries, excluding substantial population groups from the benefits of the formal metropolis. Within this context, intermediate cities emerge as strategic laboratories for adapting external instruments such as strategic urban planning and facilitating a transition from unidirectional social engineering toward participatory governance and paradiplomacy. The analysis further identifies the emergence of collective architecture as a redefinition of professional practice in which architects act as community interpreters and prioritize social management and local materials over the production of physical structures alone. By incorporating the operational category of collective form, the study conceptualizes informal settlements as complex functional systems that challenge conventional planning approaches. It concludes that the preservation and valuation of modern architectural heritage must move beyond the transfer of finished products toward collaborative exchanges of processes. This perspective contributes to critical Latin American architectural historiography and supports urban practices that promote dignity, participation, and citizenship.

Abstract

Petroleum Motor Spirit (PMS) prices in Nigeria exhibit substantial fluctuations that challenge conventional linear forecasting approaches and complicate policy and market planning. This study applies a seventh-order sinusoidal wave-function model to analyze and predict PMS price dynamics in Nigeria. Annual PMS price data were modeled using a sinusoidal framework designed to capture the recurring oscillatory behavior associated with regulated fuel-pricing systems. A logarithmic transformation and the Least Squares Method (LSM) were employed to reduce data dispersion and obtain robust parameter estimates. Model performance was validated through correlation analysis between observed and predicted prices, while pilot testing was conducted to assess the model’s reliability, stability, and predictive relevance. The results demonstrate a high degree of association between actual PMS prices and model estimates, indicating that the sinusoidal structure adequately represents the cyclical behavior of PMS prices during the study period. The findings further suggest that PMS price variations are not explained primarily by linear temporal progression but follow a wave-like pattern consistent with periodic policy adjustments, market interventions, and regulatory decisions. The proposed model therefore provides a useful analytical framework for interpreting PMS price fluctuations and forecasting future price movements within Nigeria’s fuel-pricing regime. This study contributes a nonlinear modeling approach that may support evidence-based fuel-pricing analysis, regulatory planning, and policy decision-making.

Abstract

Paper-based Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) surveys conducted at the neighborhood-unit level can delay data recapitulation, increase transcription risks, and complicate the maintenance of structured village records. This study developed an Android-based survey application to support the RT-level SDGs workflow in Sumbermulyo Village, Jogoroto, Jombang, Indonesia. A Research and Development approach with a Waterfall-oriented design was employed. System requirements were identified through direct observation of the existing survey workflow and a review of relevant regulations and literature. System behavior was modeled using Unified Modeling Language (UML), while the prototype was developed using Framework7 for the mobile interface, Laravel for the REST API, and MySQL for centralized data management. Functional verification was limited to assessing traceability among the observed requirements, design artifacts, and screen-level walkthroughs of the principal user flow. The resulting application provides authentication, dashboard access, RW and RT data management, survey-progress monitoring, structured questionnaire entry, validation support, and centralized data exchange. The available development evidence indicates that the application reduces repeated paper-to-digital recapitulation and provides a more structured mechanism for field data entry. However, the study did not conduct controlled measurements of processing time, error rates, usability, security, or scalability; therefore, the findings support functional feasibility rather than quantified effectiveness. This study contributes a context-specific implementation model that aligns mobile data collection with the local RW–RT administrative hierarchy. Future research should evaluate the application’s usability, accuracy, synchronization reliability, security, and scalability through controlled testing.
