Abstract

Background: Artisanal and small-scale gold mining, has caused river pollution, deforestation, and ecological disruption while weakening the transmission of Moronene ecological knowledge across generations. This study addresses that gap by examining how SEPAKAT’s (a local youth organization) Moronene-based ecological literacy campaign was designed, implemented, and experienced in improving ecological knowledge, strengthening youth-mediated intergenerational knowledge transfer, and identifying its enabling factors, constraints, and practical implications in a post-ASGM context. Methods: This study examined a youth-led ecological literacy campaign developed by SEPAKAT using participatory action research and an embedded mixed-methods design. The proposed model was validated through contextual/content validation with local stakeholders, process validation through triangulation of interviews, focus group discussions, observations, campaign documents, and participation records, and outcome validation using a one-group pretest–posttest design involving 50 participants . Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and paired-sample t-tests, while qualitative data were analyzed thematically and integrated through triangulation. Findings: The findings show that the campaign was implemented in four sequential phases, with the largest proportion of time allocated to the Story Space and workshops (34%), indicating the central role of intergenerational dialogue and collaborative learning. Ecological knowledge improved significantly across all domains, with overall scores increasing from 2.67 ± 0.61 to 4.05 ± 0.49 (mean difference = 1.38; 51.7%; t = 9.57; p < 0.001). Youth mediation also improved significantly, particularly in translating Moronene ecological knowledge into educational media (mean difference = 1.58; 59.8%; t = 10.08; p < 0.001). The intervention was most strongly enabled by the cultural legitimacy of Moronene values (4.42 ± 0.51; 88%) and SEPAKAT’s leadership (4.28 ± 0.56; 84%), but was constrained by limited resources and logistical challenges. Conclusion: The study concludes that youth-led, culturally grounded ecological literacy can support ecological recovery, environmental learning, and intergenerational continuity in post-ASGM communities. Novelty/Originality of this article: The novelty of this article lies in demonstrating how youth-led intergenerational co-production operationalizes indigenous ecological knowledge within a structured ecological literacy model in a post-extractive setting.

Abstract

Background: This study examines how a Livelihood Restoration Program embedded in a community engagement framework contributes to livelihood recovery among households affected by land acquisition for a geothermal power plant in a mountainous district of West Sumatra, where energy transition, climate vulnerability, and resource‑dependent livelihoods intersect. Using the Sustainable Livelihoods Framework, the study explores changes in the livelihood assets and experiences of equity, empowerment, and engagement of citizens. Methods: A convergent mixed methods design was applied, combining a census survey of 52 project-affected households with in-depth interviews with 12 informants, including PAP beneficiaries and key stakeholders, followed by separate quantitative and qualitative analyses and integrated interpretation. Findings: Quantitative results showed a positive and statistically significant, but modest, effect of program participation on livelihood assets, explaining approximately 10% of the observed variation., while climate, price, and market vulnerabilities are reflected in the remainder. Qualitative data indicate that human, social, financial, physical, and natural capital improvements are strongly linked to recovery motivation, adaptive abilities, knowledge and skills, productive capital support, and sustained mentoring. Conclusion: The Livelihood Restoration Program acts as a catalyst for capacity building and asset strengthening, but its integration with more meaningful community engagement and cross-sectoral institutional reforms in geothermal and regional development policy is critical for durable livelihood resilience and social justice. Novelty/Originality of this article: This study contributes by integrating quantitative and qualitative evidence to explain how community engagement influences livelihood restoration and sustainable livelihood outcomes in geothermal development.

Abstract

Background: Indonesia has significant solar energy potential due to its equatorial location, but its use remains suboptimal. This study aims to examine the installation of a pilot solar panel system in Kedungrong Village, Yogyakarta, as part of long-term plan in building an energy independent village. Methods: This study used a quantitative descriptive approach, with primary data in the form of field observations and system testing and secondary data in the form of solar irradiation data. The study location was in the Kedungrong Energy Independent Village, Yogyakarta, where 53 houses were identified as having the potential for rooftop PV installation. One sample was selected for system design using a 300 Wp solar panel integrated with supporting components. Results: The average solar irradiation reached 4.80 kWh/m²/day. The PV system produced a stable and reliable output voltage of 223.7 V AC for household needs. From an economic perspective, the investment cost of IDR 3,859,500 is considered affordable. Furthermore, observation results revealed that multi-stakeholder engagement involving academics, government, the community, and industry play a crucial role in supporting the program's implementation and sustainability. Each stakeholder contributed to the planning, implementation, coordination, and system use of the project to enhance its sustainability. Conclusion: The rooftop solar PV system is technically, economically, and socially feasible for household implementation and can support community-based sustainable energy development. Novelty/Originality of this article: The novelty of this research lies in the integration of technical and economic analysis with a multi-stakeholder collaborative approach can a viable and sustainable community-based rooftop solar PV system.

Abstract

Background: Groundwater serves as a fundamental resource for drinking, agriculture, and industrial processes, yet anthropogenic activities and environmental changes increasingly threaten its sustainability. This study, conducted in the Limboto Alluvial Plain, Indonesia, aimed to identify and map groundwater vulnerability by enhancing the traditional DRASTIC framework through the integration of the Multi-Influencing Factor (MIF) method. The implementation of the MIF method is proposed to improve the accuracy of the weighing system in evaluating the groundwater vulnerability. Methods: Seven thematic layers—depth to water, net recharge, aquifer media, soil media, topography, impact of the vadose zone, and hydraulic conductivity—were generated and integrated using Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The research replaced the conventional static weighting system with a dynamic MIF approach to systematically evaluate the interdependencies between hydrogeological parameters. The model's accuracy was empirically validated using nitrate concentration proxies to correlate high-risk zones with actual contamination levels. Findings: The study revealed three distinct vulnerability classes: low, moderate, and high. High-vulnerability zones were primarily identified in the central and southern regions, characterized by shallow water tables and highly permeable media. Validation results showed a strong correlation between these delineated high-risk zones and elevated nitrate concentrations, confirming the model's reliability in predicting sensitive areas. Conclusion: The study strongly recommends adopting this enhanced MIF-DRASTIC framework as a robust tool for sustainable groundwater management and land-use planning. It provides policymakers with a precise tool for mitigating contamination in alluvial contexts, though further longitudinal data could refine the model's temporal accuracy. Novelty/Originality of this article: This research is novel because it systematically addresses the inherent limitations of the static DRASTIC model by introducing dynamic weighting through the MIF approach. It uniquely integrates hydrogeological interdependencies within the Limboto Alluvial Plain, offering a more site-specific and refined methodology for groundwater protection that is more adaptable than traditional frameworks.

Abstract

Background: This study was conducted at Lombongo Nature Tourism Destination, Bone Bolango Regency, Gorontalo Province, Indonesia. This study developed a sustainable management strategy for Lombongo Nature Tourism Destination to overcome the fragmented tourism management and the poor integration among the 4A components (attraction, accessibility, amenities and ancillary services). This study aimed to examine how these components interact within a structured system to support destination performance. Methods: A mixed-method explanatory approach was applied, involving 47 stakeholders through questionnaires, interviews, and focus group discussions. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Interpretive Structural Modeling (ISM) to identify hierarchical relationships among key sustainability elements. Findings: 9 key elements formed a hierarchical system. Sustainable policy , institutional capacity, community participation, and green infrastructure serve as the foundation. Linkage elements, such as technology, environmental education, and biodiversity conservation, act as adaptive connectors. Dependent elements of green funding and the circular economy emerge as system outcomes. This confirms that sustainability depends on integrated and structured governance rather than isolated components. Conclusion: To achieve long-term effectiveness, sustainable tourism management in Lombongo requires a hierarchical and system-based approach that prioritizes governance, integration, and ecological conservation. Novelty/Originality of this article: This study uses ISM to transform the 4A framework into an integrated, system-based management model, moving beyond descriptive analysis toward structural and governance-oriented tourism modeling. The proposed model provides a practical governance framework that can assist policymakers and destination managers in prioritizing sustainable tourism interventions through integrated institutional, environmental, and community-based strategies.
