Abstract

The phenomenon of the second language has been widely spread which demands many parents to let their children learn as early as possible. Parents and teachers are the two stakeholders who are able to grant this idea. This study was conducted to present teachers’ and parents’ practices in teaching and/or introducing English as a second language and see whether or not the two perspectives were in line. The phenomenology of the qualitative study was employed in this study by using the interview as the research instrument, and two teachers were chosen as the research participants. Therefore, the data analysis of this research was conducted by transcribing the interview, open-coding, analytical coding, axial coding, and selective coding, and emerging the theme of the coding. In addition, the researcher found several findings related to early second language acquisition through parent-teacher practices such as language exposure, language accuracy, encouragement of parent-child interaction, fun learning to foster motivation of language learning, realia teaching aid, reward presentation, and the use of video after completing the data analysis by coding.

Abstract

Public speaking is the capability to speak in public with learning activities that occur through experiences and speaking practices in front of audiences. Different learning strategies the students apply in improving their speaking ability surely result in diverse speaking mastery and performances. This research aims to discover and explore what kind of learning strategies university students use in a public speaking course. Three students from the same class of public speaking course were selected as the subjects of the study. They are selected based on the score criteria: high-average score, medium-average score, and low-average score students. It was a descriptive qualitative study using questionnaires and interviews as the main instruments. The result shows that three types of students use three kinds of learning strategies: cognitive, socio-affective, and meta-cognitive strategies, but the main differences are in the factors of frequency and consistency of using the strategies. The researcher found that the high-average score student mostly used cognitive strategies to support their mastery of public speaking. The high-achieving student regularly watches and listens to English speeches on YouTube and Instagram, which cover the specific strategy: auditory representation of cognitive strategy aspects. This study concludes that the student with a high-average score employs more cognitive techniques to promote mastery of public speaking. It also recommends more frequent language exposure to improve public speaking skills.

Abstract

The translation Funding Program (TFP) was initiated concerning the Indonesian government agenda to be the guest of honor at the Frankfurt Book Fair (FBF) 2015. As a result, it produced many Indonesian-English literary translations, particularly the two from Yogyakarta. By applying the Bourdieusian approach to cultural production, this study is arranged to unravel the government’s motive and literary taste behind the execution of that program, especially through the production of two literary works, “Pilgrimage in the Land of Java” and “Jatisaba.” This study is directed to figure out the importance of Indonesian-English translation for Indonesian literature and the criteria of literary works to be involved in such a government program. Therefore, the government’s motive and literary taste behind the TFP can be elaborated further. There are two primary techniques for the data collection in this research; 1. Digital library research is utilized to access relevant information about TFP, and 2. Interview the writers to get information about their experience participating in TFP. All collected data are synchronized in the analysis to explain the binding knot among the literary translation production, TFP, and FBF. As a result, the study reveals that there were some motives behind the production of literary translation through the TFP. Those motives were also related to the literary taste influenced by international demand.

Abstract

Only little research has explored how information from alternative assessments especially portfolios might be best utilized in developing second language acquisition processes of a single individual student’s comprehension of simple present tense as one of grammar aspects. To understand these ideas more complete, a greater initial has to be set on a study. In addition, there must be a more prominent center on how teachers can implement alternative assessment especially portfolio assessment and how the information from these assessments can be utilized to inform and direct the learning process. Using mix method design, this study examined the language processing of two students (i.e., a high-ability learner and a low-ability learner) studying at grade seventh at MTsN 4 surabaya. According to the findings, There was difference in the degree to which the high ability student accurately noticed the answers of the questions (the use of s/es in simple present tense), rather than the low ability student. Both low ability and high ability learners could recognize the learning gaps before and after the learning process, and they notice their development system towards the target language. However, the high ability student performed better.

Abstract

This article analyzes Becky Albertalli’s Simon Vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda (2015) through the lens of gender performativity issues. The performativity experiences of a homosexual person are known to question American society's established beliefs about how individuals should perceive, respond to, and experience gender and sexuality. This research illustrates how gender and sexual identity, as well as cultural constructions of gender and attitudes toward specific sexual orientations, are viewed in the novel's notion of performativity. The article's discussion is framed using Judith Butler's idea of gender performativity.  Through the thematic analysis of the work, it was discovered that societal norms governed gender through a series of performativity. The book's main character, Simon, discovers that it is challenging to express his identity as a homosexual because of the pressure from cultural norms that view people by using sexual orientations other than those of commoners as deviants. However, the main character changes the social perspective so that the idea of having a different sexual orientation is accepted through a series of events.

Abstract

As a foreign language, learning English in the classroom often experiences problems. One form of teacher difficulties experienced in the classroom is the silent phase of a student when the learning process takes place. This does not only happen when the teacher explains the material, but also when students are asked to answer questions or practice talking to their friends. This article will discuss the silence that occurs in students when they are asked to speak in English. The method used is qualitative by using data triangulation to strengthen the research results. The subjects of this study were 8th grade students from 3 different provincial schools, they are SMPN 1 Sukahening, Tasikmalaya, West Java; SMPN 2 Tayu, Pati, Central Java and SMPN 4 Muara Teweh, Central Kalimantan. Taking this subject is used to see whether the silence experienced by students in each place has the same meaning or not. The results showed that effect of silence in the classroom on English learners triggering negative thoughts, feelings and emotions. The silence experienced by students was caused by several factors, such as low English mastery, lack of self-confidence and lack of preparation.

Abstract

Time is one of the salient concepts in human life since we live and act in time. Thus, research investigating time is always intriguing yet perplexing. This study aims to describe the collocations of verbs with the most frequent lexical item for temporal concept, i.e., time. The present study also compared the collocations to those in Indonesian counterparts, that is verb + waktu. This is a corpus-driven study using two reference corpora, Corpus of Contemporary American English for English data, and Leipzig Corpus Collection for Indonesian data. The association measure used to identify the verb collocates is Mutual Information (MI) and the results of collocates in both languages were compared. The result of the study shows that there are 15 most frequent verb collocates of time and waktu for both English and Indonesian, e.g., have, spend, take, membutuhkan, memanfaatkan, memerlukan, etc. Of all these collocates, there are some similarities and differences that can be mapped. The similarities are associated with basic mappings of time metaphor, e.g., TIME IS MONEY, TIME IS A RESOURCE, TIME IS A COMMODITY, and TIME IS MOTION. Despite the similarity, some differences are also identified which might be affected by limited number of verb collocates analyzed in the present study (e.g., TIME IS A FLEXIBLE OBJECT, TIME IS A CONTAINER, TIME IS A BEING, TIME IS A VICTIM). The results of the study can be used as a reference for teachers in teaching or designing teaching materials on time expressions or time metaphor.
