Abstract

This study explores the relationship and interaction between the tourist gaze and local people gaze in the development of Latimojong Tourism Village, Enrekang Regency. With its natural beauty and rich cultural heritage, the village holds significant potential as a community-based tourism destination. However, the primary challenge lies in ensuring harmony between tourist expectations and the needs of the local community. This research adopts a qualitative approach through in-depth interviews, field observations, and literature analysis. The findings reveal that the tourist gaze, which reflects tourists' perceptions of cultural authenticity and unique experiences, often conflicts with the local community’s perspectives, which prioritize environmental preservation, cultural traditions, and community welfare. To address this issue, the Harmony Gaze Framework was developed, encompassing perspective dialogue, collaborative tourism activities, shared value mapping, and participatory evaluation. This concept aims to establish an inclusive, sustainable, and community-based tourism management model. The implementation of this framework is expected to optimize the tourist appeal of Latimojong Village without compromising its local identity while simultaneously providing economic and social benefits for the community. Thus, Latimojong Tourism Village can serve as a model for community-based tourism development that is adaptive to contemporary changes and advancements.

Abstract

Abstract

Sabang City recognized as a national strategic tourism area and cruise port in western Indonesia, has significant potential to develop inclusive and sustainable tourism. However, the current condition of its public spaces remains suboptimal. This study aims to assess the quality of public spaces in Sabang based solely on field observations using ten sustainability-based indicators derived from a literature review: accessibility, safety and comfort, cleanliness and maintenance, visual appeal, diversity of functions and facilities, sociocultural value, visitor behavior patterns, economic integration, stakeholder collaboration, and environmental awareness Field observations were conducted across seven public space locations from December 2 to 14, 2024. The findings reveal that collaboration, diversity of functions, and economic integration scored the lowest, with averages below 1.5 on a 4-point scale, while visual and environmental quality emerged as the only indicator with a consistently high score above 3.5. Most other indicators, such as accessibility and safety, remained below 2.5, indicating critical gaps in inclusivity, functionality, and user comfort. These deficiencies are attributed to limited budget allocations and weak inter-agency coordination, as confirmed through supporting interviews with local government officials. The results underscore the need for improved planning, maintenance, and inter-sectoral collaboration to ensure that public spaces can serve as inclusive, multifunctional, and environmentally responsible infrastructure that supports long-term tourism development. This study provides a replicable indicator-based assessment framework and highlights specific areas for policy intervention to enhance the role of public spaces in Sabang’s sustainable tourism strategy.

Abstract

The Pokland ecotourism area in Haurwangi Village possesses natural potential that has not been optimally harnessed by community economic empowerment. The local community has not yet been able to optimize local ingredients into products with economic value, resulting in limited participation and benefits from the tourism sector. This community service activity aims to empower the community through training in processing locally sourced beverages, creating new business opportunities and increasing economic value. This study employed a mixed-methods approach with a participatory action research design. Fifteen participants participated in the intensive training. Quantitative data were collected through pre- and post-test questionnaires, analyzed using paired sample t-tests. Qualitative data obtained from observations and in-depth interviews were analyzed thematically. The analysis showed a significant increase in participants' knowledge and skills, namely 76,32%. Not only cognitive and psychomotor aspects were affected, but psychological empowerment also occurred in the form of increased self-efficacy and a shift in mindset toward local ingredients. The formation of business groups and the commitment of ecotourism managers to integrate these products are strong indicators of the program's sustainability. Integrated training with the market has proven effective as a sustainable empowerment model. Collaboration between the community as producers and destination managers as distributors is key to the model's success.
