Abstract

Hypertension is a prevalent health issue among the elderly, contributing to severe cardiovascular complications. Indonesia’s 2018 Basic Health Research (Riskesdas) reported that hypertension affects more than 50% of older adults aged 65–74 years. This community service program aimed to improve elderly knowledge and skills in hypertension prevention through Banjar language-based education and the use of cucumber infused water as a complementary approach. A participatory method was applied, involving lecturers, students, and 30 elderly residents at Uma Kandung Social Nursing Home, Banjarmasin. Activities included blood pressure measurement, health education in Banjar language, cucumber infused water preparation, blood pressure monitoring practice, and evaluation with pre- and post-tests. Findings indicated improved knowledge from 40% to 83% and a reduction in systolic blood pressure by 8–10 mmHg and diastolic by 5–7 mmHg. Participants also showed higher motivation for routine monitoring and healthier lifestyles. In conclusion, integrating culturally based education with cucumber infused water is effective in enhancing health literacy and promoting hypertension control behaviors among the elderly.

Abstract

Background: Adolescents are a vulnerable group to smoking behavior, while their knowledge about the dangers of smoking remains low. Objective: This community service activity aimed to strengthen adolescents’ knowledge about the dangers of smoking through digital counseling using PowerPoint. Methods: The counseling was delivered directly using PowerPoint media containing visual and informative materials, accompanied by discussion sessions and pre- and post-counseling knowledge evaluations. Results: Wilcoxon analysis showed a significant increase in knowledge between pre-test and post-test (p = 0.000), with 26 participants improving, 4 participants unchanged, and none declining. Conclusion: Digital counseling using PowerPoint is effective as a health education medium in community service activities because it systematically improves adolescents’ knowledge about the dangers of smoking in an engaging and easily understood manner.

Abstract

Stroke is a primary cause of mortality and disability, significantly impacting Indonesia's healthcare burden. Delays in symptom recognition often stem from low public awareness, necessitating community-based early detection. Community Health Workers (CHWs) play a strategic role in initial screening and accelerating stroke referrals. This study aims to enhance CHW capacity in early stroke detection using the Siriraj Stroke Score (SSS) and Allen Stroke Score (ASS) in Sungai Alat Village, Astambul District. A comparative descriptive design with an observational approach was employed, involving 10 CHWs. The intervention included education, practical training on SSS and ASS application, case simulations, and skill evaluations focusing on classification accuracy, assessment duration, and diagnostic precision. All participants (100%) consistently applied both methods with identical classifications. Assessment durations ranged from 10–20 minutes, with diagnostic determination achieved within 15–40 minutes. Education and hands-on training effectively improve CHW competence in community-level stroke detection, facilitating timely and accurate case referrals.

Abstract

Elderly individuals in Kuin Cerucuk are susceptible to chronic diseases, particularly hypertension and diabetes mellitus, which are exacerbated by suboptimal health management and cultural dietary habits. This community service aimed to improve elderly independence in chronic disease management through a participatory education program. The implementation method involved a community-based approach consisting of three stages: assessment, educational intervention, and evaluation. The program utilized "Lansia Beriman" (Healthy Body, Devout Worship) interactive sessions, demonstrating local Banjar diet modifications, non-pharmacological pain management (warm compresses and deep breathing exercises), and family empowerment as medication supervisors. The results showed a significant increase in health literacy, with 100% of the elderly demonstrating improved understanding of medication adherence and diet control. Furthermore, elderly participants successfully mastered independent pain management techniques, reducing their reliance on chemical analgesics. Family involvement as medication supervisors effectively ensured therapy continuity. In conclusion, the participatory education approach, integrated with cultural values, significantly enhanced the independence and functional quality of life of the elderly in Kuin Cerucuk. Continuous periodic monitoring by community health centers is recommended to sustain these health improvements.

Abstract

The decline in intrinsic capacity among older adults may affect physical and mental functions and increase the risk of dependency in daily activities. One of the early detection efforts that can be implemented in the community is through Simple Elderly Screening (SKILAS). This community service activity aimed to implement elderly health screening using the SKILAS instrument as an early detection method for intrinsic capacity decline. The activity was conducted at Uma Kandung Elderly Home, Banjarmasin, involving 25 older adults aged over 60 years. The examinations included intrinsic capacity screening using SKILAS, blood pressure measurement, body weight assessment, random blood glucose testing, and uric acid examination. The screening results showed that all older adults experienced intrinsic capacity decline with various conditions, including cognitive decline (36%), mobility limitation (28%), malnutrition (32%), visual impairment (72%), hearing impairment (8%), and depressive symptoms (28%). In addition, 40% of the participants had abnormal blood pressure and 68% had abnormal uric acid levels. The implementation of SKILAS can support early detection of health conditions among older adults and assist in planning appropriate interventions and continuous health monitoring in the community.
