Abstract

Symbolic violence is a gentle, imperceptible, and invisible violence that is often maintained by dominant groups through symbols, languages, cultures, and social norms. This study investigates the manifestation of symbolic violence in The Great Gatsby (2013) using Bourdieu’s theory of symbolic violence, focusing on concepts such as capital, habitus, field, and doxa. With a descriptive qualitative method and a multimodal critical discourse analysis approach, this study focuses on how symbolic violence is conveyed through various semiotic modes in the film, including verbal language, bodily gestures, visuals, and spatial arrangements. This study analyzes selected scenes that represent symbolic violence, focusing on six characters: Gatsby, Tom, Daisy, George, Myrtle, and Nick. The findings reveal that symbolic violence operates subtly through interactions shaped by social position and the unequal distribution of capital. Rather than being exercised by a single dominant character, symbolic violence emerges as a dynamic process where power shifts depending on who possesses dominant capital within specific social fields. These forms of symbolic violence are reinforced through the interplay of verbal, visual, gestural, and spatial elements of the film.

Abstract

This study was Motivated by the researcher's initial findings that the speaking ability of children aged 5-6 at PAUD Dara Bhakti had not yet emerged. This can be seen from 15 students at PAUD Dara Bhakti. Data obtained around 66.7% or as many as 10 children were still included in the category of children who had not developed, then 2 children were said to be starting to develop or around 13.3% while in children who developed according to expectations only around 20% or around 3 students and no children were found with very good development. Seeing this situation is very unfortunate, because children's speaking abilities include correct pronunciation, simple sentence structure, vocabulary, fluency, and good understanding. In order to improve speaking abilities in children aged 5-6 years, researchers plan to use a role-playing method in learning that aims to improve speaking abilities in early childhood at PAUD Dara Bhakti. In this study, the Classroom Action Research (CAR) method was Used using 2 cycles where each cycle was carried out five times with different role-playing themes. The results of the study showed that the role-playing method Can improve speaking abilities by 80%. The increase in the percentage of speaking ability in children aged 5-6 years from before the action from 6.7% to cycle I to 26.7% increased by 20%. Then from cycle I 26.7% to cycle II to 80% increased by 53.3%

Abstract

This research aims to increase the confidence of children aged 5-6 years through the activity of playing giant snakes and ladders in Kober Minhajul Karomah. Self-confidence is an important aspect of children's social-emotional development that needs to be stimulated from an early age so that children are able to express their opinions, dare to try new things, and believe in their own abilities. The research method used is Class Action Research (PTK) which is carried out in two cycles. Each cycle consists of stages of planning, implementation of actions, observation, and reflection. The subjects of this study are 15 children of group B. Data collection techniques use observation, documentation, and field notes. The results of the study showed an increase in children's confidence from pre-action to cycle I and from cycle I to cycle II. This increase can be seen from the indicators of children's courage in speaking their minds, appearing in front of friends, and completing tasks with confidence when playing giant snake and ladder. Based on these results, it can be concluded that the giant snake and ladder play activity is effective in increasing the confidence of children aged 5-6 years in Kober Minhajul Karomah.

Abstract

This study analyzes the phenomenon of slang language use among adolescents in RT 02 Simpang Tiga, Sungai Tebelian District, Sintang Regency. It aims to understand the social dynamics, technological advancements, and identity search reflected in their communication patterns. This descriptive qualitative research employed observation and in-depth interviews with adolescents aged 12-19 years as subjects. The findings reveal that slang serves as a primary communication tool for adolescents in their daily lives, including popular vocabulary such as "anjay," "bucin," "santuy," and "healing." Its use extends from social media to direct interactions with friends and family. Slang acts not only as a means of expression and intimacy but also as a marker of social status, participation in popular culture trends, and a tool for group solidarity. Dominant factors influencing its popularity include social media, peer groups, and popular culture (films, music, games). Interestingly, adolescents demonstrate good contextual awareness, differentiating between slang use in informal situations and formal Indonesian in official contexts. In terms of creativity, slang shows high linguistic innovation through wordplay, acronyms, and adaptations of foreign terms. Nevertheless, the extensive use of slang potentially impacts formal Indonesian language proficiency. Therefore, this study concludes the importance of a balanced understanding between appreciating adolescents' linguistic creativity and efforts to preserve good and correct Indonesian.

Abstract

This research explores the psychological conflict experienced by the main character, M, in the Thai film How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies (2024). This study uses Sigmund Freud's psychoanalytic theory, specifically the concepts of id, ego, and superego, to analyze M's inner transformation. At the beginning of the story, M is driven by a personal desire to inherit from his grandmother. However, as time goes by, he experiences emotional changes that make him face an inner conflict between his ambition and his growing moral awareness, as well as an increasingly strong emotional bond. The cultural value of filial piety in Thai society plays an important role in this process, as it helps shape M's moral awareness and the development of his superego structure. Using qualitative descriptive methods, this study identifies how M's psychological conflict is reflected through his actions, expressions, and developing relationship with his grandmother. The results show that the character's internal conflict undergoes a transition from id to the ego, followed by superego, which is influenced by cultural values. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of character development in Southeast Asian cinema by combining Freud's psychoanalytic theory with the local moral framework of filial piety values.

Abstract

The background of this study is that 11 of the 15 children in Group B at Permata Bunda Preschool have not yet developed patience. An educator must have the desire and ability to teach their students to be good children and be able to change bad traits into good ones. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to increase patience in children at Permata Bunda Preschool. The learning method used to increase children's patience is the Play, Story, and Singing method. Through the Play, Story, and Singing method, the researcher used a Classroom Action Research design, with two cycles of action. The level of children's patience in the initial observation was only 49.25%. Then, actions were taken in cycle I, and the children's patience increased to 64.25%. However, this value did not reach optimal results, therefore, actions were carried out again in cycle II to improve patience. In this study, the researcher used the Classroom Action Research method through two cycles. The results of activities in cycle II showed optimal results of 92%. The results obtained after the second cycle of action indicate that the application of the Play, Story, and Singing method to foster patience in children at Permata Bunda Preschool (PAUD) resulted in optimal improvement and can be reused by teachers as a learning method in the future.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the forms of internal and external conflicts experienced by the main characters in the novel Peter Pan by J.M. Barrie and how these conflicts affect the development of the storyline. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method with an objective approach, which emphasizes the analysis of intrinsic elements such as characters, conflicts, and plots. Data were collected through reading and recording techniques against novel texts, then analyzed with the classification of conflicts and their role in narrative structure. The results of the study show that the main character, Peter Pan, experiences internal conflicts in the form of fear of adulthood, emotional dilemmas, and identity crises, as well as external conflicts involving other characters such as Captain Hook, Wendy, and Tinker Bell. These conflicts prove to be the main drivers of the storyline, influencing character development, and reinforcing the novel's philosophical message about the conflict between childhood freedom and the responsibilities of adulthood. This research enriches the understanding of character dynamics in fiction and shows the importance of conflict as a structural and thematic element in literary works.
