Abstract

This research title is The Investigating Students’ Stress Model of the Cognitive Load in Undergraduate English Thesis Writing. The purpose of this research is to explore how final-year students who write their English theses while working part-time experience stress in relation to intrinsic, extraneous, and germane cognitive loads, using three stress model approaches: stimulus, response, and transactional stress models. This research uses a qualitative method with a case study approach. The subjects of this study were four English Education students of Universitas Muhammadiyah Muara Bungo who work part-time. Data were obtained through in-depth interviews and analyzed thematically using Maxqda. The results showed that the students experienced stress related to three types of cognitive load: intrinsic cognitive load, such as difficulty understanding theory, limited vocabulary, sentence structure, and translation; extranouse cognitive load, such as confusing lecturer revisions, family pressure, workload, and limited resources; and germane load, which although stressful, encourages motivation, development of coping strategies, and deeper academic understanding. These three load are experienced through stimulus (external pressure), response (emotional and physical reactions), and transactional (individual judgment and adaptive strategies) stress models that vary from student to student.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the grammar proficiency of eleventh-grade students at SMAN 1 Batipuh, West Sumatra, using a gamification approach. The experimental design used was a single-group pre-test and post-test. The Snakes and Ladders game combines gamification elements such as points, leaderboards, challenge-based progression, and peer collaboration to improve engagement and grammar learning outcomes. Data were collected from 33 students of grade XI F1 SMAN 1 Batipuh. The results showed a statistically significant increase; the pretest and posttest scores were normally distributed, as indicated by the results of the data normality test, with a sig. pretest value of 0.390 and a sig. posttest value of 0.083, each exceeding α (0.05). With a negative value of -21.082 below and -13.766 above, the first hypothesis test showed an effect. If the sig. (2-tailed) value shows a figure of 0.001, which means less than 0.05, then Ho is rejected and Ha is accepted. The results show that grade XI students of SMAN 1 Batipuh, West Sumatra, can improve their grammar skills through gamification-based snakes and ladders games. This study highlights the potential of gamification as an effective pedagogical tool in English language teaching, making grammar teaching more interactive and enjoyable. The findings suggest incorporating structured game mechanisms into learning activities can improve academic performance and student engagement.

Abstract

Anxiety in speaking English is a common problem experienced by students, especially at the junior high school level, and can hinder their language learning process. Therefore, it is important to identify the underlying factors that underlie the appearance of students' anxiety in speaking English. This study aims to explore and analyze the factors that cause anxiety in English speaking in grade VIII students at SMP Negeri 3 Pelepat Ilir. This study uses a qualitative research design with data collection techniques in the form of interviews and observations. Using the Interview Guideline and Observation Sheet instruments. The study participants consisted of five students who were selected purposively based on criteria such as low academic achievement and lack of confidence. The analysis technique is based on Miles and Huberman 1994, with thematic analysis based on Braun and Clarke 2006. The results of the study show that there are four main factors that cause students' anxiety, namely fear of making mistakes, lack of confidence, nervousness, and low motivation. These findings confirm the importance of creating a supportive learning environment and a positive teaching approach to help students overcome anxiety in speaking English. It was found that there was a dominant factor that had the most influence on students. One of them is the factor of lack of internal trust where there is an external cause. All four students have explained the reasons why they feel less confident. Namely lack of understanding of the material, fear of being the center of attention in class, and feeling insecure. This lack of confidence is also shown on the pitch. This factor becomes dominant because almost all students feel anxious, causing students to become less confident when trying to speak English in front of the class.
