Abstract

This study examines common pronunciation errors in English diphthong, specifically /aʊ/ and /aɪ/, among tenth-grade AKL students at SMK PGRI 4 Pasuruan. It analyzes the causes of the mispronunciation errors and strategies to tackle the challenges. The qualitative descriptive method was employed, with data collected through observations from students reading a narrative fable titled Mouse and a semi-structured interview.  The analysis identified frequent errors, including simplifying diphthongs into single vowels or substituting them with incorrect diphthongs, caused by first-language interference and limited exposure to authentic English pronunciation. The intervention was conducted in two sessions. In the first session, students read the fable aloud, and pronunciation errors were identified and addressed through guided practice. The second session involved reviewing recordings of their initial readings, comparing them with native speaker examples, and practicing in groups to improve accuracy. Targeted phonetic interventions significantly improved students' pronunciation accuracy and confidence. The study highlights the importance of structured, phonetic-focused activities in enhancing English pronunciation among non-native learners.

Abstract

This study explores the role of social media in students' writing development, focusing on the platforms they use and their perceptions of its effectiveness. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, data were gathered from thirty eighth-grade students at SMP Islam Srengat through questionnaires and interviews. The findings show that TikTok is the most widely used platform for learning, with 36.7% of students using it, followed by Instagram (30.0%), YouTube (23.3%), Facebook (6.7%), and Twitter (3.3%). While 43.3% of students find social media beneficial for improving their writing skills, 33.3% consider it quite useful, and 20% rate it as very helpful. However, some students remain neutral or disagree, often due to parental restrictions. The study highlights social media's potential as a valuable educational tool, while acknowledging that its impact on writing development varies depending on individual factors, such as student motivation, access to digital tools, and parental control.

Abstract

This study sought to determine whether the Question Answer Relationship (QAR) technique may increase students' reading comprehension of narrative literature. The research design employed in this study is Classroom Action Research (CAR). The research is carried out in a single cycle, which includes planning, acting, observation, and reflection. The participants in this study were ninth-grade students at a state junior high school in Kediri. The researcher collected the data by observation, testing, and documentation. The results of this study showed that the Question Answer Relationship technique improved ninth-grade students' comprehension of narrative written works. The results from the students' mean or average performance on the pre- and post-tests for cycle 1 support this. Cycle 1's average post-test score was 79.44, up from a mean pre-test score of 56.52. The findings of this study indicate that the Question Answer Relationship (QAR) Strategy was helpful in improving students' reading comprehension of narrative content.

Abstract

This study explores effective strategies for teaching maharah qira’ah (reading skills) to non-Arabic speakers, focusing on an analysis of the book Ma’āyīr Mahārāt al-Lughah al-’Arabiyyah lil Ghairi Nāthiqīn bihā. The research aims to identify and analyze various effective strategies in maharah qira’ah instruction. The primary objective is to propose alternative strategies that can enhance students' maharah qira’ah proficiency. This study employs a qualitative method with a descriptive-analytical approach through literature review. The main data source is the book Ma’āyīr Mahārāt al-Lughah al-’Arabiyyah lil Ghairi Nāthiqīn bihā, supplemented by relevant scholarly literature. The findings reveal that effective strategies for maharah qira’ah instruction include the phonetic approach, vocabulary development, contextual comprehension, repeated and rapid reading techniques, and the integration of learning technologies. The study emphasizes the importance of selecting appropriate strategies to address challenges in maharah qira’ah and support successful Arabic language learning.

Abstract

This study examines how combining the SQ5R strategy and poster affects students’ reading comprehension. Since the group for this study is not randomly selected, a quasi-experimental design is used. The research subjects are students from a senior high school in Indonesia. The sample was selected using purposive sampling, in which XI-1 became the experimental class, and XI-2 was the control class. The experimental class consisted of 20 students, and the control class consisted of 25 students. The instrument consisted of two written tests; a pre-test and a post-test. Students’ reading comprehension achievement was the dependent variable, and the combination of the SQ5R strategy and poster was the independent variable. An independent sample test was utilized to analyze the data. The result suggests that the combination of the SQ5R strategy and poster was conducive to significantly higher students’ reading comprehension skills, in which the significant value (0.000) was lower than the alpha value (0.005). It can be concluded that the combination of the SQ5R strategy and poster significantly affects students’ reading comprehension skills.

Abstract

This systematic review examines the multifaceted role of exit exams in higher education, emphasizing their purposes, impacts, and implications for students and educational institutions. Analyzing a diverse range of studies from 2000 to 2024, the review reveals that exit exams serve both as tools for accountability and potential sources of inequity. While these assessments can enhance educational quality and student preparedness, they may disproportionately affect underrepresented students, leading to increased stress and anxiety. The findings indicate that the pressure associated with exit exams can negatively impact student well-being, particularly for those who do not pass. Additionally, the review discusses the importance of aligning exit exams with curricular goals to ensure relevance and effectiveness. The necessity for inclusive assessment practices is highlighted, alongside robust support systems to aid all students in navigating these challenges. Recommendations include fostering collaboration among faculty, ongoing research into the effectiveness of exit exams, and advocating for equitable assessment policies. Ultimately, the review underscores the need for continuous dialogue on the role of exit exams to ensure they fulfill their intended purposes while promoting educational equity.
