Abstract

This research examines Bogor Palace as an architectural text that represents a fusion of European and tropical styles through a semiotic approach. Bogor Palace is not only a symbol of Dutch colonial power but also reflects the adaptation of Indonesian culture and tropical environment. This research aims to reveal the meanings and symbols contained in the architectural elements of Bogor Palace, such as symmetrical facades, tall pillars, large windows, cross ventilation, and steep roofs. Using semiotic methods, this research analyzes how these elements function as signs that represent aesthetic, historical and ecological values. The results show that the European architectural style of Bogor Palace, reflected through classical structures such as pillars and decorative ornaments, symbolizes the status of power and the influence of colonial culture. On the other hand, tropical elements such as cross ventilation, spacious terraces, and steep roofs represent adaptation to local environmental conditions, while symbolizing harmony between humans and nature. The symbolism in this design not only serves to fulfill functional needs, but also creates a visual narrative that reflects the dialog between foreign and local cultures. The study concludes that Bogor Palace is an artifact rich in semiotic meaning, where each architectural element contains messages about history, culture and ecological adaptation. This research contributes to the study of colonial architecture, particularly in understanding how historic buildings can be interpreted as sign systems that represent cultural and environmental complexities.

Abstract

This research analyzes the use of Buckingham Palace as a filming location for The Young Victoria using Greimas' semiotic narrative approach and Freud's psychoanalysis. The film represents Queen Victoria's life journey from childhood to her coronation as Queen of England, with a strong narrative point of view. Through semiotic methods, this study explores the relationships between characters in the film and how the role of palace architecture supports the visual narrative and symbolism of monarchical power. In addition, this study explores the historical and architectural value of Buckingham Palace, including design changes over time and their relevance in supporting the atmosphere of a movie set in history. The method used is descriptive qualitative with data sources coming from literature, documentation, and online media interviews. The results show that the presence of historical architecture not only enriches the aesthetics of the movie, but also strengthens the narrative meaning.

The method used is descriptive qualitative with data collection techniques through literature study and observation of several leading tourist attractions, including Kenanga Garden, Royal Sumatra Golf Course, Rajasyah Outbound & Edu Center, and Graha Maria Annai Velangkanni. The results showed that each destination has its own charm in terms of attractions, accessibility, amenities, and ancillary facilities. The existence of adequate facilities and a natural atmosphere are the added value of these destinations. However, some locations still need improvement in terms of infrastructure and promotion. Therefore, collaboration between the government, tourism managers, and the community is needed to support the development of sustainable tourism in Medan Tuntungan Sub-district.

Abstract

Indonesia is a country renowned for its rich natural resources and cultural heritage. The tourism sector, particularly in North Sumatra, includes the Batak Toba culture as one of its highlights. One aspect of Batak Toba culture reflects the potential for cultural tourism in Huta Tinggi, Samosir Regency. To develop and enhance the potential of the tourism sector in Huta Tinggi, and as an effort to preserve cultural heritage, it is necessary to establish a homestay building. A homestay plays an important role in the development of the Huta Tinggi area. The design of the homestay area adopts a local wisdom-based approach using the modern (Neo-Vernacular) Batak Toba architectural style. This is because Neo-Vernacular architecture represents a modern form that still retains the image or distinctive characteristics of the region, with a design that is adapted to contemporary contexts.

Abstract

Household organic waste is one of the largest contributors to municipal solid waste in Indonesia and, if not properly managed, can cause significant environmental pollution. The utilization of organic waste through anaerobic digestion to produce biogas offers an environmentally friendly solution while simultaneously providing a renewable energy source. This study aims to analyze the potential of biogas production from household organic waste and to evaluate the quality of the resulting biogas. The methodology includes collecting household organic waste samples, conducting fermentation in a laboratory-scale digester, and measuring the volume and methane content of the produced biogas. The results indicate that household organic waste, particularly food residues, contains a high level of organic matter, enabling significant biogas generation with methane concentrations suitable for alternative fuel use. The utilization of household organic waste for biogas production not only supports waste reduction efforts but also contributes to the development of clean and sustainable energy.

Abstract

The increase in the population of Medan City has a direct impact on the increasing demand for housing and settlements, which is not always in line with environmental carrying capacity and the fulfillment of livable housing standards. Residential buildings contribute significantly to energy and water consumption, as well as environmental degradation, thus requiring a sustainable design approach. This study aims to formulate criteria and principles for the design of simple, livable houses by applying the concept of green buildings. The research method used is descriptive qualitative with a focus on the design of class 1a residential buildings. The study was conducted through a review of relevant regulations and standards, including the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing's Green Building principles, the GREENSHIP Homes assessment system by the Green Building Council Indonesia, and livable housing indicators from the North Sumatra II Housing Provision Implementation Center. The results of the study show that the application of green building concepts in Small Houses can be realized through proper site management, optimization of natural lighting and ventilation, efficient use of energy and water, sustainable waste and wastewater management, and the selection of environmentally friendly building materials. The application of these principles can produce Small Houses that not only meet livable standards but also contribute to environmental sustainability.

Abstract

Panorama Sileme-Leme is a tourist destination in Humbang Hasundutan Regency, specifically in Huta Sileme-Leme, Parsingguran 2 Village, Pollung District, located at an altitude of approximately 1,600 meters above sea level. The beautiful natural panorama with Lake Toba as its backdrop and surrounded by expansive plantations makes it an ideal recreational spot. However, the supporting facilities in this area are insufficient to accommodate various recreational activities that could potentially be conducted there. Therefore, landscape planning and the provision of tourist facilities are necessary to make the area more attractive to visitors. The initial idea behind this concept is to plan the Sileme-leme Panorama area as an attractive tourism destination equipped with various supporting facilities for tourism activities. However, because it is located in a hilly area prone to landslides, the concept of a pine forest tourism area was implemented. In addition to enhancing aesthetics and visitor comfort, its primary function is to minimize landslides because pine trees are known as effective soil-stabilizing vegetation. In addition, the pine forest tourism landscape can also have interesting spots such as tall, shady pine trees, restaurants or cafes with views of the pine forest, and also play areas for children. This helps enhance the visitor's tourism experience and makes them feel close to nature and the beauty of the pine forest. The planning of the Sileme-leme Panorama Area uses a semi-pine forest concept supplemented with various tourism facilities. The implementation of this concept has been considered through various analyses conducted previously. With the implementation of the semi-pine forest concept, it is hoped that the natural potential will not change significantly, and the preservation of nature in this area will remain intact. This planning is expected to make Panorama Sileme-leme a more developed tourist attraction and more appealing to visitors. Additionally, this planning is anticipated to boost the local community's economy.
