Abstract

This research aims to develop a model that integrates green building concepts into a sustainable maintenance system, ultimately enhancing the life cycle value of Modest Houses (RTS) in Indonesia. The rationale for this study stems from the building sector's high energy consumption and emissions, coupled with current maintenance practices for modest houses that remain conventional, reactive, and focused on initial costs—thereby neglecting long-term efficiency. Utilizing a Research and Development (R&D) mixed-methods approach, this study maps the gap between GBCI GREEN HOMES principles and existing maintenance practices. It identifies relevant green building criteria during the operation and maintenance phases to design a practical and applicable maintenance model. The proposed model is tested and validated on selected RTS units through observations, interviews, and simple simulations to evaluate its economic and environmental impacts, as well as its effect on occupant comfort. The output of this research is a sustainable maintenance guideline designed to reduce operational costs, minimize environmental impacts, and extend the lifespan of modest houses. Simultaneously, it supports the broader sustainable development agenda and the transition toward healthier, more energy-efficient residential buildings.

Abstract

Medan City is one of the cities in Indonesia that cannot be separated from the problem of population growth. The problem of increasing population growth causes the need for residential areas to expand. Based on this, the arrangement of residential areas with limited land is starting to be directed towards vertical housing by utilizing limited land, maximizing open space, and providing public facilities. This design method uses field observations, literature studies, interviews and documentation. Data collection techniques were carried out by compiling site data, building data, analysis and vertical village design concepts in accordance with the tropical architecture approach. Therefore, Vertical Village Design with a Tropical Architecture approach aims to produce residential areas that are livable, which emphasizes site analysis, environmentally friendly and energy efficient to create termal security in buildings.

Abstract

The Kampung Aur settlement is one of the slum settlements located on the banks of the Deli River in Medan City. This area frequently faces flooding and inadequate sanitation issues owing to land scarcity. Horizontal settlement upgrading is no longer feasible without eviction. This study aims to implement the vertical kampung concept as a solution to address land scarcity while preserving the local community’s socio-cultural aspects. The research method used is a qualitative method through field observation, literature studie, interview and documentation. Data collection techniques were carried out by compiling building data, analysis and vertical village design concepts. The results show that implementing a vertical kampung in Kampung Aur requires a design approach that is adaptive to flooding, as well as the vertical integration of communal spaces to adapt kampung style socializing habits.

Abstract

Kampung Aur, situated along the banks of the Deli River in Medan, is a densely populated informal settlement characterized by environmental degradation and urban blight. To mitigate slum expansion, this study proposes a habitable vertical housing design that preserves local socio-cultural values through the ‘vertical kampung’ concept. Integrating green open spaces and efficient wastewater treatment system, this vertical model rejuvenates the urban fabric while maintaining community social cohesion. This research employs survey methods, field observations, literature reviews, and site analyses, utilizing a tropical architecture framework to address high-density residential challenges along the Deli River basin.

Abstract

The rapid urban development in Bandar Lampung has led to significant reductions in Green Open Spaces (RTH), contributing to environmental issues and diminished public well-being. ITERA Botanical Gardens (Kebun Raya ITERA) presents an opportunity to address these concerns by serving as a multifunctional green space for conservation, education, and recreation. This study aims to explore the activity patterns of visitors to Kebun Raya ITERA and their impact on enhancing community happiness and emotional well-being. Employing qualitative descriptive methods, data were collected through field observations, interviews, and literature reviews, focusing on visitor interactions with green spaces and their perceived benefits. Results indicate that activities such as passive recreation, active sports, educational pursuits, and social interactions significantly contribute to reducing stress and improving psychological health. Recommendations include enhancing facilities, accessibility, and educational initiatives to maximize the garden's potential as a sustainable urban green space. This research highlights the critical role of green open spaces in fostering community happiness, contributing to both individual well-being and broader societal benefits.

Abstract

Natural tourist attractions are natural resources that have potential and have an attraction for visitors both in their natural state and after cultivation efforts, while Green Open Space [RTH] is an elongated area/path and/or cluster, whose use is more open, a place to grow. plants, both those that grow naturally and those that are deliberately planted. The method used is a documentary descriptive method using primary data and secondary data. Through the identification of Gajah Mada Park in Medan City, it is hoped that it can reveal the role of the park in supporting tourist destinations and supporting an increase in the percentage of open green space in Medan City and it is hoped that it can become a proposal for designing Green Open Space. The method used is a documentary descriptive method using primary data and secondary data.
