Abstract

This research analyzed the derivational morpheme in "Khanh Vy Tran's Speech On TEDx Talk" talk show”. The research’s purpose was to find out the derivational morpheme found in "Khanh Vy Tran's Speech On TEDx Talk" and also describe the lexical changes happened of the derivational morpheme found. The researcher used several theories about the derivational morpheme and the lexical changes to support the research as example from Fromkin, Yule and Katamba. The researcher used the descriptive qualitative method to analyze and to describe the collected data. The researcher used the video of Khanh Vy Tran's speech which was downloaded from YouTube and transcribed into transcript as the core data of the analysis. To support the analysis, the researcher used the Oxford dictionary and articles related to the topic. As the result, the researcher found total of 39 words of derivational morpheme. The derivational morpheme was divided by its suffix based on the lexical changes attached of the words, and it was found that 18 words in verb into noun category, 12 words in adjective into adverb category; 2 words adjective into noun category, 1 word adjective into adjective category, 3 words in noun into adjective category, and 3 words in noun into noun category. It could be concluded that the derivational morpheme in the speech was highly used by Khan Vy Tran.

Abstract

Language registers are significant because they offer several options for language and subject conditioning. This study aimed to explain the use of formal and informal registers used by salesmen and customers in the Muhibbah Tour and Travel Company found in their interaction through WhatsApp. The research method used in this thesis research was a qualitative. The data was collected by taking screenshots of the WhatsApp chats between the salesmen and the customers. The results of this study indicated that there were 59 chats by salesmen and 73 chats by customers. From these results it was found that the use of formal registers referred to several categories, namely: passive voice (salesmen 10%, customers 8%), no abbreviation (salesmen 13%, customers 19%), politeness words (salesmen 20%, customers 15%), facts or references (salesmen 15%, customers 0%), and technical / business vocabularies (salesmen 8%, customers 5%). Meanwhile, the use of informal registers also referred to several categories, including: active voice (salesmen 10%, customers 16%), abbreviation (salesmen 33%, customers 34%), rapport or familiarity speech (salesmen 6%, customers 13%), and expressing opinions (salesmen 6%, customers 6%). For the context of the situation of using registers, the researcher found: field (asking and giving information, ordering, and getting confirmation), tenor (social status, relative status, and social distance), and mode (written mode). The use of formal and informal registers on WhatsApp chats between marketing employees of the Muhibbah Tour and Travel Company was quite balanced, where the chats seemed neither rude nor stiff.

Abstract

Coffee shop is very popular in Indonesia. Coffee shop usually has logo which contain their own characteristic to identify the coffee shop. People usually start the conversation with each other, everyone can meet up with their friends in the coffee shop, people could talk, gathering, and relaxing. This study was to focused learnt about element of the sign and meaning through the coffee shops logos in Pekanbaru. The purpose of this research was to analyze what the elements of the sign and what the interpretant meaning of the sign in coffee shops logos. This research used qualitative method to describe the research about elements and interpretant sign in each coffee shop logo. This research using triadic semiotics theory which created by Charles Sanders Peirce to do analysis. Total data to analyze were 10 coffee shops in Pekanbaru. The result showed that The icon where to focus on the image or could be said the icon such as a half circle, manual coffee grinder handle, coffee bean grow some leaf, letter “D” fill with house and grass, the bridge and plastic up with coffee bean, letter “A” with coffee bean and roof house with letter “O” fill with coffee bean. The index sign was to shown which had the name of their coffee shop. The symbols was to focus on the philosophical meaning of the logo color.

Abstract

Sultan Resto features a particularly Malay character by incorporating architectural embellishments from the Siak Sultanate, which is now popular in Pekanbaru, and serves real Malay home food. The purpose of this research was to find out kind and change of meaning in process of borrowing words that were happened in Food & Beverage Product of Sultan resto. The researcher used some theories about borrowing words to support the research from Baugh, Noam chomsky, and Martin Haspelmath. The researcher used descriptive qualitative method to analyze and describe the data. The researcher used recording for taking the video in Food & Beverage Product of sultan resto as the unit of analysis. To support the analysis, the researcher used cooking dictionary and some english dictionaries. As the result, the researcher found 20 words of borrowing words. The words were divided into three kinds of borrowing words and it was found that there were sixth loan words, ninth loan blend, and fifth loan shift. Then there were two kinds of changes of meaning, it consists of nineth Narrowing of meanings and two Extension of meanings. it could be concluded that the borrowing words from English and France languages especially in Sultan resto’s Food & Beverage Product were quite high.

Abstract

Speaking by mixing two languages currently become a habit in national plus school which used both of English and Bahasa Indonesia in their teching and learning activities. The code mixing in early ages like kindergarten was very unique and interested to be analyzed. The purpose of this research was to identify the type of code mixing used and the factors caused the code mixing of the students’ conversation at the school. The research used descriptive qualitative methods. The data were the transcript of students’s conversation and the parents’ interview. The data were collected by using voice recorder and questionaire through google from. The data were analyzed by using three data analysis theory of data reduction, data display, and drawing conclusion. After analyzing the data, the results showed that there were seven uterances of insertion, eleven utterances of alternative, and seven congruent lexicalization of code mixing occured in students’ conversations. Then, the factors caused the code mixing in students’ conversation were situation and prestige factor bilingual factor which most of students speak both of English and bahasa indonesia not only at school but also at home, the speaker and partner speaking factor, the social community factors, the situation factor, vocabulary factor and prestige factors. Thus, situation factor and prestige factor were the dominants factor that mostly motivated students to mix their conversation in the class discussion and in their daily communication.

Abstract

Narcis Narcisism gained attention and discussion in recent years. This was caused by the rise of social media facilitating self-promotion and self-expression on a massive scale so that narcissistic behaviours can be seen more and more obvious. It could become a problem when they were excessive, inflexible, and maladaptive, leading to harm or distress to individuals or those around them. These extreme traits can be classified as Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD). This study aimed to describe the narcissistic's trait of Elizabeth Halsey in Bad Teacher Movie. Elizabeth Halsey worked as a teacher who should demonstrate empathy by understanding her students' perspectives, needs, and emotions, how she can creates a safe and supportive learning environment where students feel valued and heard but her character as a teacher showed narcissistic  traits that are the opposite of what a teacher should have. This research used a psychoanalysis approach. The method of this research was qualitative method. In collecting the data, the researchers watched the movie, marking  and classifying in what kinds of types of traits that the Elizabeth Halsey had. In analyzing the data, the researchers used descriptive method firstly by identifying all the statements that describe the types of the traits faced by Elizabeth Halsey, and then analyzed the data based on the finding. The results of this study found that there were four of nine traits of narcissistic in Elizabeth Halsey's Character. The first is entitlement trait, she only thought about herself, she did not have any shame on herself, she still asked money from her ex fiance. The second was exploitative traits, in this case, Elizabeth Halsey took advantage on many people, she would do everything without thinking's other feelings and opinion. The third was lack of empathy, she did not showed any empathy for her students who got bullied in front of her, and the last was envy trait, she did  not accept the reality that the wealthy man fell in love with her enemy at school, she arranged everything to make her enemy kicked out from school.

Abstract

Online learning is any learning that uses the internet or web-based. Online learning can be done by using learning applications, one of which is the Edlink platform. This research aims at explaining the perception of English education students on the use of Edlink platform during covid-19 pandemic. This research used descriptive-quantitative research methods. The population of the research was the first, third, and fifth semester student in English department in Universitas Lancang Kuning. The researchers selected a sample of 45 students from the population. In the data collection, researchers used questionnaires. Before being handed out the questionnaire tested its validity and reliability values using Correlation Product Moment in SPSS 17.0. There is a questionnaire of 22 statements that valid because of sig results. (2-tailed)]< significant level (α) 0,05. With cronbach-alpha >970 the result showed that students' perception of the use of the Edlink platform during the covid-19 pandemic that the majority of English education students have a positive and categorized into high perception of the use of the Edlink platform application. Before this application is used students are given socialization and application coordinators to deal with the obstacles experienced. In conclusion students can adapt the Edlink platform to temporarily replace learning during covid-19.

Abstract

Learning difficulties become one of inhibiting factors in the learning process, to produce a good quality of writing, students have various options of writing strategies. This study aims to find out students' perception toward the use of pair work strategy in writing descriptive text at SMA smart Indonesia. The method of this research was descriptive quantitative research with survey design. This research was conducted from December 2021 to January 2022. The instruments used in this research were questionnaire which consisted of 16 items. Data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics in the form of summation of scores, mean, standard deviation and then interpreted descriptively. The result of the findings revealed that the students have high level perception.  It was proved by the mean score, benefit gained 4.23. Learning Improvement gained 4.26, and motivation gained 4.37. Overall, students' perception toward the use of pair work strategy  in writing descriptive text have a positive and categorized into very high average score was 4.27. In  conclusion, pair work strategy in the writing learning process provided more opportunities for students to be more active in the learning process and pair work can develop students' writing skills because pair work provided significant benefits for students, especially in the learning process in SMA Smart Indonesia.

Abstract

A speech act is an action performed when saying something. Without taking into account both the hearers and the speakers, speech acts cannot be properly comprehended. Speech acts are intended for real people, whose capacity for recognition places restrictions on the expressiveness of the lyrics. This research aimed to analyze the speech act classifications and the forms of commissive speech act used in Jermaine Edwards' song "Beautiful Day". This research used a qualitative method. The object of the research was Jermaine Edwards' song "Beautiful Day." The data were collected by using the observational method, followed by listening and note-taking techniques. Then the data were analyzed by using a descriptive approach to describe the types and forms of descriptive speech acts found in the song lyrics. The researcher used the theory of  Searle (1969) to analyze the speech act classifications and the forms of commissive speech acts. After analyzing the data, it was found five types of speech acts: representative, declarative, directive, expressive, and commissive. The forms of commissive speech act in the song "Beautiful Day" by Jermaine Edwards were promise, warn, and threat.

Abstract

Myths can shape society and influence people’s behaviour. They play a very important role in society, as a genre of folklore. In advertising, the meaning process occurs at two stages, namely denotative and connotative. Advertisers often use this mythical level to appeal to consumers' emotions and associate them with their products. Based on explanation above, this research purpose to identify the denotation, connotation, and myth of beauty concept contained in three skincare advertisements there are Avoskin, Oasea, and NPure, taken from each official Instagram brand. In this research, researcher used semiotic theory to explore the meaning of signs in each advertisement scene from Roland Barthes. The research method used descriptive qualitative research, it means research that focuses on describing and interpreting the data analysis process. The data collection technique is documentation, by means of screenshots in each scene that appears in the advertisement. The results and conclusions of this research is the researcher identify several meanings of denotation, connotation and beauty myths in each scene in the advertisement. The most common beauty myth found in these three advertisements is symbolized by attitudes, behaviour, human facial expressions, and natural conditions. It can be concluded that beauty is not only based on the physical but can be symbolized in different forms.
