Abstract

This research is based on the students’ problems in writing argumentative essay, especially in developing and organizing ideas, using good grammar and diction, and applying correct writing mechanics, such as the use of capital letter, spelling, and punctuation. The purpose of this research is to solve the students’ problems in writing argumentative essay through collaborative writing strategy. The design employed in this research was classroom action research. The participants involved in this research were 23 students of English Education Department, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, University of Lancang Kuning Pekanbaru, Indonesia. The instruments used in this research were writing test, field note, observation checklist, and interview. Based on the result of the test, the students’ score had reached the criteria of success set, and it was significantly improved from the result before the research conducted. The mean score of the mid-term test was 54.9, and the mean score of the cycle test was 74.3. In addition, based on the data gained from the field note, observation checklist, and interview, it was found that the students were active, creative, and enjoy the learning process. In conclusion, the use of collaborative writing strategy can solve the students’ problems in writing argumentative essay as well.Keywords: writing skill; writing aspects; argumentative essay; collaborative writing strategy;  classroom action research.

Abstract

This research was done because of the students’ problem of pronouncing ending –ed. To solve the problem, the researchers tried to implement the application on learning media in this gadget era. The purpose of the research is to improve the students’ problem by implementing android application in pronouncing of ending –ed and to find the factors influencing the improvement. The method of this research was qualitative method. The research design was classroom action research of second-year-students in 2018/2019 academic year at STIBA (Foreign Language College) Persada Bunda Pekanbaru. The applications used were online and offline application English Pronunciation. The result showed that there is an improvement by implementing the android application of students’ pronunciation of ending –ed. It can be seen that the increasing of the students’ ability in pronouncing of ending –ed were at the level of “fairly good” category become the level of “good” category. Some factors influencing the students’ ability in pronouncing endng –ed were they often practice and listen to the android applications whether online and offline English Pronunciation to obtain the understanding and the information how to pronounce the exact words  of ending –ed. To conclude, the implementation of android application of online and android based can improve the ability of students’ pronunciation of pronouncing sound /t/, /d/, and /ɪd/ of ending –ed.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to describe about PAUD teachers’ speaking skill in Tampan district. The method of this research was survey design, there was no treatment and data manipulating on that research variable, independent variable, its only describe the result of PAUD teachers’ speaking skill in teaching English in Tampan district Pekanbaru. This research data was collected by using a test, speaking. Scientifically, the result of PAUD teachers’ speaking skill has been known. Their speaking skill in teaching English was low. It was 33.5 on poor level. The result showed that the teachers should improve their skill in teaching English. Besides, this research result is expected to be as one of references in deciding the method, media, or resources to be applied in teaching English for early childhood students. In conclusion, PAUD teachers in Tampan district seldom use or practice their English whether with their colleague or students.

Abstract

English as Foreign Language (EFL) learners in Indonesia, especially in English Education Department is strongly expected to have good writing skill. This is because the learners’ achievement in writing can be used as a valuable contribution towards the development of English Language Teaching (ELT) in Indonesia, especially in the teaching of writing skill. Therefore, it needs a writing assessment and evaluation to measure the learners’ writing skill. This study aims at assessing and evaluating the EFL learners’ ability in writing an essay, especially in writing academic or scientific essay. Quantitative method with descriptive quantitative design employed in this study. The writing test and unstructured interview were used in this study as research instrument. This study was conducted on November 2016 at University of Lancang Kuning, Indonesia. There were 80 learners selected as participants in this study. The result of the writing test showed that the learners’ average score was 68.8 and it was categorized into fair level. Moreover, based on the interview the learners said that they felt difficult in developing and organizing idea with correct grammar and diction in a composition. It was basically influenced by limited writing strategy and learning materials. Therefore, appropriate learning materials supported by writing strategy are needed to facilitate and improve the learners’ writing skill. In conclusion, the learners’ writing skill is in fair level of ability.

Abstract

This study aims at investigating EFL learners’ ability in applying writing mechanics in writing an argumentative essay. Quantitative method with descriptive quantitative design was employed in this study. To collect the data, the writing test and unstructured interview were used in this research. This research was conducted on April 2018 at Universitas Lancang Kuning, Pekanbaru. There were 46 learners selected as participants in this research. The result of the writing test showed that the learners’ mean score was 64.6 and it was categorized into fair level of ability. Moreover, based on the interview the learners said that they felt difficult in applying good mechanics in their writing. It was beacuse the leraners had low alertness and carefulness in writing, low motivation to write an essay, low confidence when writing, and seldom to practice writing at leisure time. Therefore, appropriate writing strategy supported by suitable learning materials is needed to facilitate and improve the learners’ ability in applying writing mechanics in their writing. In conclusion, the learners’ ability in applying writing mechanics in an argumentative essay is in fair level of ability.

Abstract

Abstrak Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini didasari dengan adanya permasalahan dan kebutuhan guru-guru bahasa Inggris dan siswa-siswi di SMK Negeri 7 Kota Pekanbaru dalam hal pengetahuan pengucapan/pelafalan (Pronunciation) dan kompetensi komunikasi antar-budaya (Intercultural Communicative Competence). Guru-guru bahasa Inggris dan siswa-siswi di SMK Negeri 7 Kota Pekanbaru ini memiliki pengetahuan yang minim tentang Pronunciation dan Intercultural Communicative Competence. Untuk itu, tim pelaksana memandang perlu untuk melakukan pengabdian masyarakat kepada segenap guru-guru bahasa Inggris dan siswa-siswi di SMK Negeri 7 Kota Pekanbaru dalam bentuk sosialisasi dan pelatihan singkat sebagai bentuk solusi dari permasalahan dan kebutuhan di sekolah tersebut. Pada kegiatan sosialisasi, metode yang dilakukan adalah metode ceramah dan tanya-jawab seputar kompetensi komunikasi antar-budaya. Selanjutnya, dilanjutkan dengan latihan dan pendampingan terhadap penggunaan aplikasi English Pronunciation berbasis Android sebagai upaya untuk mengenalkan kompetensi komunikasi antar-budaya kepada guru dan siswa. Pada kegiatan ini, tim pelaksana juga memberikan angket pada awal kegiatan dan di akhir kegiatan untuk melihat pemahaman guru dan siswa terhadap materi yang disampaikan. Setelah kegiatan ini dilakukan, dapat dilihat bahwa pemahaman guru dan siswa terhadap Intercultural Communicative Competence dan Pronunciation menjadi lebih baik. Hal ini dapat dibuktikan dengan hasil angket yang sudah diisi oleh guru dan siswa pada saat kegiatan berlangsung.

Quantitative method with descriptive quantitative design was employed in this study. To collect the data, the writing test and unstructured interview were used in this research. Abstract

Kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat ini didasari dengan adanya kebutuhan guru-guru Sekolah Menengah Atas (SMA)/Sekolah Menengah Kejuruan (SMK) sederajat di Kota Pekanbaru untuk melakukan kegiatan Penelitian Tindakan Kelas (PTK) dan menuliskannya dalam bentuk usulan penelitian. Berdasarkan fakta tersebut, tim pelaksana merasa perlu untuk melakukan kegiatan ini yang bertujuan untuk memperluas pengetahuan guru tentang rancangan PTK serta meningkatkan kemampuan guru dalam menulis usulan PTK. Kegiatan ini dilakukan dalam 2 sesi. Pada sesi pertama, peserta diberikan materi tentang rancangan PTK. Selanjutnya, pada sesi kedua peserta diberikan pelatihan menulis usulan PTK. Kemudian, kemampuan peserta dalam menulis proposal dianalisis menggunakan rubrik penilaian, dan peserta juga diberikan angket untuk menilai sejauh mana penilaian mereka terhadap kegiatan pengabdian ini. Setelah kegiatan ini dilakukan, dapat ditemukan bahwa kemampuan peserta dalam menuliskan proposal PTK dikategorikan ke dalam kemampuan yang “baik”. Kemudian, berdasarkan hasil angket, dapat dikatakan bahwa peserta mendapatkan wawasan dan pengetahuan yang lebih banyak lagi. Sehingga, dapat disimpulkan bahwa kegiatan ini dapat melatih dan menambah wawasan peserta tentang PTK. Berdasarkan hasil dan kesimpulan tersebut, tim menyarankan peserta agar lebih aktif dan teliti lagi mencari permasalahan/kesulitan belajar yang dihadapi oleh siswa dan mencari solusinya. Kemudian, guru sebaiknya meningkatkan lagi pemahamannya tentang PTK agar bisa melakukannya dengan maksimal.

Abstract

This research was based on the students’ problems in writing descriptive text, especially in terms of organizing the generic structure, determining adjective to describe people or things, and mastering vocabulary. The purposes of this research were to improve the students’ writing skill in descriptive text and to find out the factors influencing the students’ improvement through Attribute Chart strategy at grade 7.2 of SMPIT Al Birru Pekanbaru. The design of this research was Classroom Action Research. The instruments used were the writing test, observation checklist, field note, and interview. The participants involved in this research were the students at grade 7.2 which was consisted of 16 students. The result showed that the students base score was 51.8, and the score in cycle 1 was 70.4. It means the students’ score was improved in cycle 1. Furthermore this improvement was influenced by 4 factors. These factors were obtained based on the result of field note. Moreover, the results of field note were: students’ motivation, students’ interest, students’ exciting with the new topic, and the students’ activeness in the learning process. In conclusion, the use of Attribute Chart strategy in writing descriptive text can improve students’ writing skill at 7.2 grade of SMPIT Al Birru Pekanbaru.

Abstract

Bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa asing bagi pemelajar Indonesia, meskipun bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa asing, mahasiswa bahasa Inggris harus memahami semua mata pelajaran yang diberikan dalam program studi mereka. Ibaratnya TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) merupakan mata kuliah wajib yang harus diperoleh mahasiswa semester 6 di Fakultas Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan (FKIP) Uniersitas Lancang Kuning (UNILAK) sebelum mahasiswa calon guru praktik mengajar di sekolah pada semester 7. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi kemampuan siswa dalam mengajar di mata kuliah TEFL. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode penelitian deskriptif kualitatif. Hasil dari penelitian ini adalah kemampuan siswa dalam keterampilan mengajar dikategorikan baik pada pra pembelajaran yaitu sebesar 29% dapat dikategorikan baik. Pra pembelajaran meliputi cara membuka kelas dengan baik, memberikan salam, memeriksa kehadiran siswa dan memberikan pemanasan. Sedangkan kategori sedang yaitu pada keterampilan menutup yaitu sekitar 23%. Keterampilan penutup meliputi, kemampuan siswa bahasa Inggris dalam menyimpulkan materi, memberikan umpan balik. Sedangkan untuk kegiatan inti sebesar 24% meliputi kemampuan siswa dalam menjelaskan materi, mengelola kegiatan kelas, dan memberikan minat siswa. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa kemampuan siswa dalam keterampilan mengajar dikategorikan baik di semua komponen, siswa bahasa Inggris mampu memahami aktivitas- aktivitas di dalam keterampilan mengajar.
