Abstract

The interaction between the Peripheral Nervous System (PNS) and the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) plays a crucial role in maintaining the body's homeostasis. This study aims to analyze the cooperative mechanisms between the PNS and ANS in responding to physiological changes such as blood pressure, body temperature, and digestive processes, as well as to evaluate the clinical implications and pathophysiology resulting from dysfunctions in these nervous systems. The research method employed is a qualitative descriptive approach using library research techniques. Data were collected from various scientific literatures, medical textbooks, and indexed articles in databases such as PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar. The analysis was conducted using content analysis and source triangulation to ensure data validity. The findings show that the coordination between the PNS and ANS is essential for effectively integrating sensory and motor impulses with the body’s autonomic responses. Disorders such as peripheral neuropathy, autonomic dysreflexia, and dysfunctions due to diabetes mellitus significantly affect an individual's physiological stability. Accurate diagnosis through technologies such as electromyography (EMG) and autonomic function tests is vital for the early management of these conditions. Furthermore, therapeutic approaches involving pharmacological combinations, neurofunctional rehabilitation, and other supportive therapies yield significant outcomes in nerve function recovery. This study concludes that a deep understanding of the interaction between the PNS and ANS is a fundamental basis for developing holistic clinical strategies to maintain neural health and enhance the overall quality of life for patients.

Abstract

Hardcore smokers represent a critical subgroup in the tobacco epidemic due to their high nicotine dependence and low motivation to quit, making them difficult to reach through conventional cessation strategies. This study aims to analyze the association between individual characteristics and anti-smoking policies with hardcore smoking behavior in Indonesia. A cross-sectional design was employed using secondary data from the Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS) Indonesia 2021. A total of 2,837 current smokers who met the inclusion criteria were included in the analysis. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regression were used to examine the determinants of hardcore smoking. The prevalence of hardcore smokers was 7.47%. Significant predictors of hardcore smoking included early smoking initiation before age 15 (AOR = 5.9; p < 0.001) and between ages 15–24 (AOR = 4.83; p = 0.001), employment status (AOR = 4.39; p = 0.032), poor knowledge of tobacco-related health risks (AOR = 2.51; p < 0.001), and living in households without smoke-free home policies (AOR = 2.33; p = 0.011). These findings highlight the need for integrated interventions to prevent early initiation, improve tobacco-related health literacy, and strengthen smoke-free home policies. This study provides population-based evidence to support more targeted and effective tobacco control strategies, particularly for high-risk groups.

Abstract

Difficulties in quitting smoking among adolescents represent an increasingly complex public health challenge, particularly in countries with a high prevalence of tobacco use such as Indonesia. This study aims to analyze the determinants of smoking cessation difficulty among junior and senior high school students using data from the 2019 Indonesia Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS). The study employed bivariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses, incorporating survey weights, stratification, and cluster effects. The findings indicate that 79.58% of adolescent smokers experience difficulty quitting. Significant factors associated with increased likelihood of cessation difficulty include having smoking parents (OR 1.31), being offered cigarettes by peers (OR 1.32), being female (OR 2.17), older age (OR 1.68–2.07), and exposure to smoking at school (OR 1.18). Conversely, exposure to smoking at home was not significantly associated with cessation difficulty. These results emphasize the need for comprehensive adolescent smoking cessation efforts that integrate family involvement, smoke-free school environments, and social-support–based interventions. Understanding the factors that hinder adolescents’ ability to quit smoking enables the development of more effective tobacco control strategies to protect youth from long-term addiction risks.

Abstract

Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR) remains a significant public health concern in Indonesia, with most maternal deaths caused by pregnancy-related complications that are largely preventable through continuous midwifery care. The women center care approach places women at the center of care and represents an essential strategy for pregnancy planning beginning in the preconception period. Although digital applications have been implemented in premarital and preconception health services, their utilization has not yet fully reflected the principles of women-centered care. This study aimed to identify the need for application-based women-centered care among prospective brides planning pregnancy. A qualitative study with a phenomenological approach was conducted. Participants were selected purposively and included primary health care center heads, coordinating midwives responsible for maternal and child health services, and prospective brides who utilized premarital health services. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and analyzed using the PIECES framework (Performance, Information, Economy, Control and Security, Efficiency, and Services). The findings indicated that the currently used applications—ELSIMIL, Puscatin, and ILP—primarily focus on pregnancy eligibility screening and stunting prevention and do not comprehensively address broader preconception care needs. Limitations were identified in information provision, efficiency, continuity of care, follow-up mechanisms, and data control and security. Furthermore, no application currently supports continuous care and women’s empowerment in accordance with women-centered care principles. This study concludes that the development of an integrated, sustainable, and women-centered preconception application is critically needed to support healthy and safe pregnancy planning.
