Journal of Environment and Sustainability Education (JOEASE) publishes original, double-blind peer-reviewed articles from throughout the world in the fields of science education and environmental education. The main aim is to give experts in these fields the opportunity to publishing and disseminating their original scholarly works and ideas for the benefit of academics, researchers, institutions, educators, and learners. It is hoped that the journal will establish a strong basis for disseminating high-quality research that will lead to more effective practices. Primarily literature reviews (systematic, meta-analysis), empirical and theoretical studies are welcomed. JOEASE also accepts essays, critical commentary, case studies, and reviews of various publications which can advance scholarly understandings of environmental and science education. Abstract

Understanding physics relies heavily on mastering mathematical formulas, essential for problem-solving, critical thinking, reasoning, and communication. Yet, students struggle due to uninspiring explanations, leading to lost focus during learning. One such topic that involves mathematical formulas in physics is velocity and acceleration. This study aims to assist physics students from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Putrajaya Presint 16(1), Malaysia who have difficulties in solving velocity and acceleration drill questions by using the Walkmeter application for learning. This approach also aims to improve and enhance the teaching practices of the teacher and increase students' interest and achievement in solving velocity and acceleration questions. Initial observations during the teaching and learning process showed that there were students who were unclear and took a long time to master the velocity and acceleration drill exercises. Initial surveys through observations, document analysis, and questionnaires indicated that students easily lose focus. The difficulty in remembering formulas and the conventional methods that are not suitable caused students to take a long time to solve drill questions. An action plan was devised by developing the WalkMeter application outside the classroom. Information gathered from observations and questionnaires showed an improvement in students' interest, attitudes, and achievements after using the WalkMeter application. Overall, this study has successfully enhanced the quality of teaching by teachers and the learning experiences of students in solving velocity and acceleration drill questions more easily and effectively. This has made the out-of-classroom teaching and learning process more meaningful.

Abstract

This article is motivated by the Sirius School for High School Teachers (ESPEM) and the lack of texts on synchrotron light and its application in basic education. It is aimed at high school teachers of Natural Sciences (Physics, Chemistry and Biology) and aims to present an introduction to the concept of synchrotron radiation, in the largest scientific enterprise in Latin America, the National Center for Research in Energy and Materials (CNPEM), where the newest Brazilian synchrotron light source is located, in a particle accelerator called Sirius. After introducing the reader to the development of Brazilian science, the present work's methodology is to address the conceptual definition and history of synchrotron light, for its understanding in a qualitative way and to generate results that are in dialogue with the application of modern and contemporary physics in basic education, and concluding with the presentation of ideas that dialogue with the content present in school curricula on how to approach these concepts in basic education, which dialogues with the application of Modern and Contemporary Physics in High School.

Abstract

This paper examines the efficacy of two modes of digital learning object package on students’ achievement and interest in rocket and satellite in post covid’19 Era. The study adopted Quasi-Experimental research design. A sample of 132 SS3 physics students selected using purposive sampling technique. The instruments used for data collection were Rocket and Satellite Achievement Test (RSAT) and Students Interest Questionnaire (SIQ) developed by the researchers. The reliability coefficient indices of 0.88 and 0.83 for RSAT and SIQ were obtained using Kuder-Richardson 20 (KR-20) formula and Cronbach Alpha. The data obtained were analyzed using mean and standard deviation to answer the research questions and analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) to test the Null hypotheses. Findings revealed that DLO with tutor-led instructional model significantly promotes students’ achievement and interest in rocket and satellite compared to DLO self-paced instructional model. Gender had some influence on physics students’ achievement and interest in Rocket and Satellite but not statistically significant. Based on the findings it was recommended amongst others that: Physics teachers should adopt the use of DLO with Online teaching packages (especially using, tutor-led instructional model) to enhance students’ achievement and interest in the Rocket and Satellite.

Abstract

One of the problems in learning physics is the weak ability of students to solve problems. Therefore, this study aims to conduct a preliminary study to recommend appropriate learning models. The type of research used is survey research. As many as 23 students were involved as primary data sources to determine the need for problem-solving skills. Respondents came from class XI of one of the state high schools in Yogyakarta. Problem-solving ability data was collected using 16 survey items formatted in the Google Form. Data analysis was performed using Rasch modeling. The analysis results show that there are limitations in students' problem-solving skills or abilities. Based on the survey results, it is recommended that the Problem base learning or guided inquiry model can be an alternative to optimizing students' problem-solving abilities.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the needs of fourth-grade students of SDN 5 Pandesari who tend to be passive and have low learning motivation, thus affecting the achievement of IPAS learning. The purpose of this study is to describe the development process, determine the validity, practicality, and effectiveness of PjBL-based interactive media using the Lumi Education application. This type of research is Research and Development (R&D) which uses the ADDIE development model as the basis for product development. The results in this study indicate that PjBL-based interactive media using the Lumi Education application: 1) valid for use in IPAS learning with a percentage of 96% from media experts with the category "Very valid", 92% from material experts with the category "Very valid", and 88% from linguists with the category "Very valid". 2) practical, with the acquisition of a percentage from teachers of 89% with the category "Very Practical", a limited trial of 86% with the category "Very Practical", and a broad trial of 87% with the category "Very Practical". 3) effective, with an N-gain score of 0.62 with a treatment effectiveness category of "Moderate". Based on these results, it can be concluded that this PjBL-based interactive media using the Lumi Education application is valid and practical for use in learning IPAS grade IV.

Abstract

The main purpose of this study is to explore students’ misconceptions of science concepts in secondary school biology in Gusau, Zamfara State. Three research questions and one null hypothesis guided the study. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. 1750 senior secondary school three (SS3) biology students of 2020/2021 session in all the 25 public secondary schools in Gusau, Zamfara State, formed the population for the study. The sample size of 220 senior secondary three (SS3) students was used for the study. Simple random sampling and proportionate stratified random sampling techniques were used in composing the sample. Questionnaire on the source of students’ misconception of science and biology concepts (QSSMSCB) and Students’ Conception Test (SCT) having 20 objective items developed by the researchers to measure students’ conception in biology. Frequency and percentage were used to answer all the research questions, and Chi-square was used in testing the null hypothesis of the study. The study found that: the heart, photosynthesis, fertilization, peristalsis, and gamete were the common misconceptions among secondary school biology students in Gusau; biology textbooks, teachers, and traditional/religious beliefs were sources of misconceptions of science concepts among secondary schools in Gusau; and finally, the influence of gender on secondary school students’ conception of biology in Gusau is not statistically significant. Based on the findings, the following recommendations were made, among others: biology teachers should learn how to probe into students’ conceptions in a bit to help them grasp the correct/clear explanation (i.e., conceptual understanding) of to-be-learnt concepts for better understanding.

Abstract

This article is the third in a trilogy, in which experimental activities involving classic symmetrical resistive circuits are proposed, where we draw attention to the fact that the use of halogen-incandescent lamps as resistors promotes an excellent visualization of symmetries or non-existences, through the comparison of the brightness of the lights, making the experimental activity a more playful and attractive practice for the student. This work aims to contribute to the small number of pedagogical experimental works involving symmetrical resistive electrical circuits, a proposal that approaches the subject in a playful and light way. Our methods use low-cost and easily accessible material. In the present paper, one focuses on the tetrahedral and octahedral cases. Both the theoretical development and the experimental analysis are presented and compared. The main implications are the importance of using arguments of symmetry as a pedagogical tool in solving problems (in the specific case, simplification-analysis of resistive electrical circuits) was evidenced in the analysis of the arrangements.

Abstract

This research investigates the connection between Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) practices and the value of firms within the Indian automobile sector. By conducting a thorough quantitative examination of ESG scores alongside financial performance metrics, it was discovered that robust ESG performance, especially in the realms of environmental sustainability and social accountability, is linked to improved financial results. Firms pouring resources into electric vehicles, minimising emissions, and prioritising employee well-being experienced enhanced market capitalisation and stock performance. The research highlights that the incorporation of ESG principles not only meets moral responsibilities but also boosts financial outcomes in a fiercely competitive international marketplace. The results indicate that Indian automobile firms can achieve considerable benefits by emphasising ESG considerations, and it is essential for policymakers to encourage these practices to foster enduring growth and sustainability.

Abstract

This paper presents a literature review on the difficulties faced by students in Mechanics, carried out by consulting articles in journals, dissertations, and theses that address the subject. The research method used is a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) and the research focuses on publications in physics education, covering the first records on the subject, at the end of the 1970s, with a main emphasis on studies carried out in the last ten years and excluding the rarely cited older articles. The works found were selected because they were: highly cited articles, review articles, and recent articles in the main journals in the area (last ten years) and organized into four categories: i) spontaneous conceptions, ii) conceptual resources used by students, iii) constructivist methods and iv) engagement methods. In the works identified, it was found, for example, that there is a significant amount of publications that explore the subject, but a consolidated solution has not yet been observed. Furthermore, it is clear that the traditional methods of teaching physics contribute little to the understanding of basic concepts and that there is a shortage of studies that propose practical solutions to the problems experienced by physics teachers working in high schools. The research concentration is with higher education students, without a progressive development to address this problem from high school onwards.

Abstract

Student teachers and cooperating teachers are mandated to teach and impart to students the needed skills for them to become environmentally conscious citizens upholding sustainable and ecomonical practices. With that, the present study compares the green skills integration practices of student teachers and their cooperating teachers among secondary schools in a province in the Philippines as a basis for an enhanced instructional plan. The study utilizes the comparative design of quantitative research, wherein a questionnaire is used to gather data from 100 respondents (50 student teachers and 50 cooperating teachers) who voluntarily participated in the study. The study is implemented among public secondary schools in a province in the Philippines where the student teachers are deployed. As partners in the internship program, the cooperating teachers of the student teachers are included to compare their integration practices. A questionnaire is used to measure the green skills integration in the teaching practices. Descriptive statistics (mean and standard deviation) and inferential statistics (independent samples t-test) are used to analyze and identify significant differences in their integration practices. Findings reveal that cooperating teachers are more engaged in integrating green skills than student teachers, highlighting the need for enhanced training and support. A comprehensive learning plan, including targeted training and curriculum integration, is recommended to promote sustainable practices in education.
