Abstract

ChatGPT has become increasingly popular in recent times due to its utilization of AI technology, surpassing Google in terms of effectiveness. It is also widely used by students as a valuable learning tool. When learning English, ChatGPT can aid in translating passages and evaluating students' writing. This study aimed to assess the impact of ChatGPT on students' writing skills. The results demonstrated that students were able to identify their writing mistakes through the use of ChatGPT. Not only did ChatGPT provide corrections, but it also offered comments on their writing, facilitating easy revision. Furthermore, students exhibited improved writing when compared to using Google Translate. While Google Translate merely translates the text, ChatGPT provides suggestions for enhancing the writing, resulting in more cohesive compositions. However, students argued that Google Translate was more convenient because it allowed for automatic translation by simply taking a picture of their writing. In contrast, ChatGPT requires manual typing of the text. It is worth noting that although Google Translate offers convenience, ChatGPT provides valuable guidance for better writing. In conclusion, ChatGPT can serve as an alternative for teaching writing. Teachers can encourage students to utilize ChatGPT to evaluate their writing, ensuring that they do not overly rely on it and make progress in learning English. By striking a balance between independent writing skills and the assistance of ChatGPT, students can enhance their overall language proficiency.

Abstract

For most students, learning to read exposition text is not easy. When reading expository material, students often struggle to understand the purpose of reading, identify key concepts, and locate specific details in the text. These problems cause EFL (English as a Foreign Language) learners to find reading expository texts a challenging task. Since almost all students have difficulty understanding expository texts, teachers need strategies to facilitate their comprehension of such texts. One potential strategy is to incorporate CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages)-based digital reading resources into the EFL classroom. The use of these digital reading resources provides an opportunity for students to improve their English language skills and critical thinking. This study aims to identify the characteristics of CEFR-based expository digital reading resources in the EFL classroom. This study used an R&D (research and development) design with a qualitative approach. A needs analysis was conducted through interviews with two teachers who provided insights into what students need when learning using the internet. The results showed that digital resources are needed to help students learn expositional texts. These digital resources not only help in understanding expository texts but also play an important role in the development of students' overall English language skills and critical thinking skills.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the English language training program applied to hotel and resort staff in Pagaralam, South Sumatra. English language proficiency is critical in the hospitality and tourism industry, allowing Staff to provide high-quality services to international guests. This study uses a qualitative case study approach. Data were collected through questionnaires, in-depth interviews, and observations of 50 staff participating in the three-month training program. The results showed a significant improvement in the English language skills of Staff after participating in the training program, with the average score increasing by 30%. Interactive learning methods and the use of language learning apps have proven to be effective in improving English language skills. While there are limited time constraints for Staff to participate in training, using technology helps to overcome this problem. Staff with better English skills can communicate more effectively with international guests, which positively impacts guest satisfaction and the hotel's reputation. This study concludes that structured and relevant English language training programs are very effective in improving the English language skills of hotel and resort staff in Pagaralam. Management support and investment in continuous training are essential to maintain and enhance employee competencies. This finding has significant implications for developing human resources and the attractiveness of tourist destinations in Pagaralam. Practical recommendations include increased flexibility of training schedules and collaboration with educational institutions for more comprehensive training programs.

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the Nearpod application in enhancing students' vocabulary. Utilizing a quasi-experimental design, quantitative methods were employed, and data were collected through pre-tests and post-tests. The findings revealed a significant improvement in vocabulary scores among students using Nearpod. The experimental group showed an increase in average scores from 51.13 (pre-test) to 75.97 (post-test), with a maximum score of 90 and a minimum score of 60. In contrast, the control group's scores increased from 52.03 to 72.22, with a maximum score of 85 and a minimum score of 55. The T-test results indicated a higher post-test score in the experimental group compared to the control group. The standard deviation for the experimental group was 8.604, and for the control group, it was 7.763. The average standard error was 1.587 for the experimental group and 1.265 for the control group. The independent sample t-test showed t (df=56) = 2003 with a p-value of 0.945, leading to the rejection of the null hypothesis (Ho) and acceptance of the alternative hypothesis (Ha). These results suggest that the Nearpod application is effective in improving students' vocabulary achievement.
