Abstract

Direct relation model has been known as an analytical model to measure the relationship between economic sectors. However, there has not been known an analysis to measure the catalyst sector. Generally, the analytical model of relations of economic activities is an aggregative model which neglects the function of catalyst sector. Possibly, this will ignore its influence, when sometimes it is important to know the acceleration this influence for planning purposes. This paper uses analytical model of catalyst sectors of nine sectors in North Sulawesi Province with 56 causality combinations in each of the cataiyst sector. The result shows that nine important economy sectors in North Sulawesi Province are induced by three economy catalyst sectors. First, strong catalyst sector consists of transport and communication sector, manufacturing industry sector, and trade, hotel and restaurants sector. Second, medium catalyst sector; consists of agriculture sector, finance, real estate and business services sector, and electricity, gas and water supply sector. Third, weak catalyst sector: consists of construction sector, services sector, and mining and quarrying sector.

Abstract

The economic growth of the country is inseparable from the development of its financial sector. Therefore, this research attempted to prove the existence of causality between financial sector and economic growth in Indonesia using data between Ql of 1996 to Q4 of 2006. The variables used as proxy for financial sector are monetization, private credit, total deposits, stock market capitalism, and stock market value traded-while the real GDP is used as a proxy for economic growth. This research aims to determine which variable is the most dominant influence in the shock given in causality result. This research methodology used Vector Error Correction Model (VECM) and Granger causality. VECM is used to find out the dominant variable that gave shock, while Granger causality is used to detect the causality between variables. Granger causality test shows the existence of one way causality between real GDP and private credit, total deposit, and stock market value traded. These causalities come from three sources. First, from real GDP to private credit; second, from real GDP to stock market value traded; and the last, from total deposit to real GDP. Meanwhile, VECM test shows the result that the economic growth can be a boosting factor for Indonesian financial sector growth. Moreover, the dominant variable in creating shock on economic growth is stock market value traded. The Granger causality estimation shows that there are one-way causalities between real GDP and private credit, total deposit, and stock market value traded.

Abstract

This paper presents an analysis of the effect of fiscal policy in Indonesia based on a VAR apĀ proach. Fiscal policy shocks are identified as a structural residuals related to unexpected government expenditures and tax revenues. Impulse responses are then used to simulate the dynamic response of key macroeconomics variables of shocks. The analysis shows that GDP responses negatively to tax shocks, and positively to expenditure shock. Moreover, disposable income and private consumption react negatively to taxation and positively to government expenditures. Altogether the results are consistent with that of Keynesian models.

Abstract

Using the non-parametric method of Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and the parametric method of Stochastic Frontier Approach (SFA). this study investigates the efficiency of the Islamic Banking recent operations in Indonesia over the period 2005 to 2007. In specifying input-output variables of Islamic banks, the intermediation approach is selected as it is in line with the principle of Islamic financial system. The attributions of technical efficiency (utilization of capacity) and scale efficiency (optimality of scale achieved) are identified. The principal findings for the period under study indicated that technical and scale efficiency scores are improving but n'bt 100 percent optimal during research period. According to SFA approach, closer to100 percent meansa bank actsefficiently. Overall, the result shows that Islamic banks suffer slight inefficiencies during the period 2005-2007, and tend to be increasing. The study has several important policy implications to offer, one of which is that it could be taken as a guideline for the Indonesian government to chart a policy on banking deregulation and mergers. Moreover, the study provides some information and identifies the source of inefficiency, which could, in turn, be used to assist banks' managements to overcome the problems of inefficiency.

Abstract

The impacts of exchange rate to an economy both domestically and internationally are an interesting discussion. One of the examples for discussion is exchange rate pass-through (ERPT). ERPT is defined as the rate of change of prices (domestic, imported or exported) as a result of change in exchange rate. Consumer price index (CPI) is one of the most frequent indicators used for measuring domestic price. This paper analyzes the impacts of exchange rate change (ERPT) to seven group of CPI in Indonesia. The Cholesky Decomposition is employed to identify structural shock of Structural Vector Autoregression (SVAR) which then combined with Vector Error Correction Model (VECM) for 48 time series units. The result shows that for the entire period there is an incomplete pass-through for the seven group of CPI. The largest effect occurs in the transportation and communication sector and food and beverages sector in which 35 percent of their changes in CPI are affected by change in exchange rate.

Abstract

As the result of global financial liberalization there is a tendency for increasing number of portfolio investment which in turn dominates the domestic financial market. This study aims to elaborate the effect of short- term portfolio investment flows to the exchange rate. Using the method of Vector Auto Regressive (VAR), this study employs quarterly data from 1997 to 2007. The result shows that both real and nominal exchange rates are affected by the short-term portfolio investment flows dominantly. In particular the short-term portfolio investment inflows strengthen the local currency. Secondly, in other direction short-term portfolio investment flows also affected by both real and nominal exchange rate. Thirdly, the impact of short- term portfolio investment flows to change of nominal exchange rate is temporarily due to adjustment toward equilibrium, but not for real exchange rate.

Abstract

The economy of Jakarta which vastly grows has changed its area into a complex and highly dense urbanized area, indicated almost all covered by office blocks, manufacturing activities, and residential area while left relatively small for non-urban activity area. Furthermore, in the last decade, the economy of Jakarta has not only influenced in its administrative area, but also has moved across its surrounding area, such as Bogor, Depok, Tangerang and Bekasi. As a consequence, it has changed the allocation of land using in those areas, from the exertion of rice field using to office, manufacturing and residential activities in such a way that going to show a city face. This process is often called urban sprawl. According to the urban economics theory, there are 3 sectors that can change a region as a new urbanized area which are office, manufacturing, and residential activities. This research try to find how those sectors of the economy of Jakarta influence the land allocation process of its surrounding area. Furthermore, this research will show the sprawling direction from those sectors. For instance, it is found that the office sector sprawls to nowhere.
