Abstract

Socialism and Islam, or Islamic socialism, are two streams of thought that have continued to develop in Middle Eastern and North African societies for centuries. These two streams frequently reinforce each other. This article examines the debate and practical implementation of Islamic socialism in the thought of contemporary Muslim philosophers such as Jamal al-Dīn al-Afghanī, Salamah Mūsa, Muṣṭafa al-Sibaʽī, and ‘Ali Sharī‘atī. This study used a comparative approach by exploring primary sources from contemporary Muslim thinkers who are the subject of the study. The findings showed that socialist Islamic thinkers have creative and original thought patterns. They intensively and comprehensively explored Islamic teachings and traditions to explain and build a complete ‘Islamic Socialism’, not just a patchwork between ‘Socialism’ and ‘Islam’. In addition, some intellectuals from the modern Muslim world created theoretical ideas and showed how Islamic socialism was implemented and realized in the form of institutions.

Abstract

This article discusses the phenomenon of philosophical recitation at the Jenderal Sudirman Mosque, Yogyakarta. This research starts from the public's assumption that studying philosophy is complex; studying philosophy makes people not believe in the existence of God, and then it starts from the assumption that mosques are usually used as places of worship, carrying out religious rituals. However, it is different from the Jenderal Sudirman Mosque in Yogyakarta. This research is qualitative and field-based with an Edmund Husserl phenomenological approach. The results of this research show that the participants who took part in the Philosophy Qur’an were not only students or Muslims but also non-Muslims, and some participants were transgender. Not only that, the participants also came from various social backgrounds. The activity of reciting the philosophical Qur’an is also popular because of the presence of Fahruddin Faiz as an icon of the Qur’an of philosophy at the Jenderal Sudirman Mosque. This reciting of philosophy can change the participants' perspective on error and distance them from God because studying philosophy can make people closer to God.

Abstract

The polemic in discussing the concept of the caliphate has always been a never-ending debate. The Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia group is one of the leading forces that continuously promotes the caliphate, a system that some Islamic groups claim is the only solution to the problem of civilization, in which Muslim society is considered the main force in the glorious history of Islam. This qualitative literature study discusses the discourse of thought and criticism of understanding the Khilāfah a la Hizbut Tahrir concept. This study shows Ulil Abshar Abdalla's criticism of Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia's interpretation of leaders who must take conventional actions or allegiance; according to him, matters that are no longer relevant because matters of leadership are not regulated in detail in religion but social laws that apply depending on the conditions of society. Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia's understanding is a bad idea because it is considered an act of manipulating arguments and claims on things considered wrong. Their concept has a bad influence, triggering a wider internal conflict and the decline of the people, on the other hand. Islam does not want the existence of a state because, basically, Islam only regulates fundamental values in society.

Abstract

This article examines Muhammad Abduh's criticism of Gabriel Hanotaux's thoughts, as stated in his book Islam Bainal Ilmi Wal Madaniyah. The type of research used is literature, with a figure study approach. The results showed that Abduh disagreed with Hanotaux in 6 cases. First, regarding progress, only the European Christian Aryan ethnic group possessed it. According to Abduh, the advancement of the rights of all ethnicities and the attribution of Aryan ethnicity to Christianity is not appropriate. Second, Hanotaux wrongly considers Islam a fatalist religion and Christianity a religion that has free will in its destiny. Third, regarding the social reality of Muslims, Abduh has the same views as Hanotaux and is self-critical of the situation of Muslims. Fourth, on the theme of colonial politics, Abduh criticized Hanotaux, who argued that this was purely out of religious interests. Fifth, in the theme of secularization, Hanotaux mixes state political affairs with religion to completely separate them, while Abduh believes that the two can't be separated; all that can be done is to divide tasks and areas of authority between politics and religion.

Abstract

This research was library research with overthinking as its material object and the Stoicism of Marcus Aurelius as a formal object. The main problem in this study is how Marcus Aurelius' Stoicism becomes a solution to overthinking. This research used critical analysis and heuristics methods. The data source in this research refers to the book or personal record of Marcus Aurelius, namely Meditations, which is supported by other sources that are closely related to the problems of Stoicism and overthinking. There are some critical points as the solution to the overthinking of Marcus Aurelius' Stoicism, namely, first, living in harmony with nature, where things beyond human control are on the scale of nature. Second, regarding the treatment of others, the actions and words of others are beyond human control, and what should be controlled is their perception. Third, self-restraint is in of control of humans. Everything that comes from out of control will not affect and interfere if in of control can be managed with the argumentation that humans as a whole are human beings that have a ratio; then this is the core of Marcus Aurelius' Stoicism.

Abstract

This study explores the dynamics of tolerance within interfaith families, focusing on how these families navigate religious differences and their impact on household harmony and the religious upbringing of their children. Conducted in Jorong Taratak Baru, Solok Selatan, West Sumatra, this research employs a qualitative methodology, utilizing fieldwork through observations, in-depth interviews, and document analysis. Primary data were collected directly from interfaith families in the area, while secondary sources, including scholarly articles, theses, and books on tolerance, provided contextual insights. The research aims to understand how tolerance is cultivated and sustained within interfaith households. Findings reveal that despite societal perceptions of interfaith marriages as fraught with challenges, these families demonstrate remarkable resilience and adaptability. They establish harmonious domestic environments, comparable to those of single-faith households, by fostering mutual respect and embracing diversity. The study highlights that the success of interfaith households hinges on the families’ conscious efforts to nurture tolerance, ensuring that differences are not perceived as barriers but as opportunities for mutual enrichment. This research contributes to the broader discourse on interfaith relations, emphasizing the potential of tolerance to bridge divides in increasingly pluralistic societies. By showcasing how interfaith families thrive despite challenges, this study underscores the importance of fostering understanding and acceptance in multicultural contexts.

Abstract

This article examines the concept of the Islamic Left in Hassan Hanafi’s thought and its relevance to the liberation of oppressed societies. Hanafi introduces the Islamic Left as a transformative intellectual framework aimed at addressing the multifaceted crises—political, economic, and social—faced by marginalized societies. He envisions this paradigm as a critical tool for dismantling systemic oppression and fostering societal emancipation. Using a critical literature review of Hanafi’s major works, this study examines the core tenets of the Islamic Left and assesses its applicability in contemporary contexts. Hanafi’s approach emphasizes liberation as a central goal of prophetic religious teachings, aligning social justice with the ethical and spiritual imperatives of Islam. His critique of societal structures highlights the need to challenge economic exploitation, political subjugation, and cultural hegemony. Furthermore, his vision advocates a significant paradigm shift in Islamic thought, urging a move from a theocentric worldview—centered on divine transcendence—to an anthropocentric perspective, which places human agency and dignity at the forefront of social and civilizational struggles. This article contributes to the broader discourse on religion and social justice by demonstrating the relevance of Hanafi’s Islamic Left in contemporary efforts to combat inequality and foster progressive social change. It highlights the enduring significance of liberation theology within modern Islamic intellectual traditions.

Abstract

This study explores the seminal thoughts of Kyai Haji Abdurrahman Wahid, widely known as Gus Dur, a distinguished advocate of pluralism in Indonesia. Gus Dur regarded diversity as an inherent and invaluable aspect of human existence, deserving of respect and preservation. Indonesia, celebrated for its cultural and religious diversity, simultaneously faces significant challenges in sustaining societal harmony amidst its pluralistic landscape. The research aims to critically analyze Gus Dur's perspectives on human values, tolerance, and pluralism, offering them as a conceptual framework for fostering a harmonious and inclusive society in Indonesia. Employing a qualitative methodology with a literature review approach, this study draws upon primary sources including Gus Dur's writings, speeches, and related scholarly works. The findings reveal Gus Dur's strong emphasis on intercultural dialogue, the promotion of social justice, and the safeguarding of religious freedom as foundational elements of pluralism. Moreover, he advocated for educational reforms to cultivate values of tolerance, pluralism, and the internalization of Pancasila as the ideological bedrock of national unity. By synthesizing Gus Dur's pluralistic vision, this study makes a significant contribution to academic discourse, providing actionable insights into strategies for enhancing social cohesion, embracing diversity, and building an inclusive and harmonious society, particularly within the context of Indonesia’s multiculturalism.
