Abstract

This study explores the portrayal of attitudes towards religious multiculturalism in the animated series Upin & Ipin, focusing on episodes centered around Hari Raya, Deepavali, and Gong Xi Fa Cai. Given the rich diversity present in human societies, understanding how media representations handle multicultural interactions is crucial. Utilizing a qualitative approach, this research conducts a library-based analysis of historical and philosophical concepts related to multiculturalism. The investigation aims to examine and interpret the series' depiction of attitudes towards religious diversity and their practical implications for multicultural interactions. The findings reveal four key attitudes promoted within the series: tolerance, harmony, fairness, and respect. These attitudes are not only depicted within the series but also reflect practices that can be applied to real-world multicultural contexts. The study concludes that these attitudes are not merely fictional portrayals but reflect practical approaches that can be applied in real-world multicultural settings. Upin & Ipin serves as a model for fostering positive intercultural relationships by illustrating how empathetic and respectful interactions can contribute to a more harmonious society. The series provides an effective framework for addressing and navigating religious diversity, offering valuable lessons for both individuals and communities striving to cultivate inclusive and supportive environments.

Abstract

This study investigates the evolving nature of knowledge in addressing contemporary issues that arise with rapid societal changes. Motivated by the need for adaptive solutions beyond traditional monodisciplinary approaches, this research examines the new paradigm introduced by Amin Abdullah in his seminal work, "MIT" (Multidisciplinary, Interdisciplinary, and Transdisciplinary). Employing a qualitative methodology with a library research approach, the study analyzes primary and secondary sources related to Abdullah's framework. Content and historical analysis techniques were utilized to interpret the data. The findings reveal that Abdullah’s paradigm integrates three clusters of knowledge—Naql (Revelation), Aql (Reason), and Qalb (Intuition)—through a trialogue involving subjective (religion), objective (science), and intersubjective (conscience) aspects. This approach promotes a comprehensive framework for addressing contemporary complexities by merging hadarah al-nas (religion), hadarah al-falsafah (philosophy), and hadarah al-‘ilm (science). Abdullah advocates for dialogical and integrative values, emphasizing semipermeable boundaries, intersubjective testability, and creative imagination as tools for effective problem-solving in a multifaceted world. This paradigm offers a significant shift from stagnant scientific approaches, proposing a dynamic model that fosters adaptability and holistic understanding.

Abstract

This article presents a comprehensive examination of Seyyed Hossein Nasr's evaluation model within the context of perennial philosophy. Nasr’s model advocates for the revival of perennial wisdom—a traditional Islamic perspective that he believes offers a remedy to the contemporary crises plaguing modern civilization. According to Nasr, both Western and Islamic civilizations have faltered in achieving their fundamental objectives, leading to deteriorating human relations and widespread spiritual disillusionment, which in turn adversely impacts the environment. This paper employs a library research methodology, synthesizing data from a variety of sources including books, academic journals, and other relevant media. Through the lens of Nasr’s concepts, the study explores how his ideas might serve as a conduit for re-aligning contemporary society with the core principles of Islam and addressing the spiritual and existential challenges of modernity. Additionally, the paper discusses the potential reapplication of Sufism as a strategic approach to mitigate the crisis induced by rapid technological advancements and societal changes. By reintroducing and integrating these traditional insights, the study aims to offer solutions to the multifaceted problems faced by contemporary human societies.

Abstract

This study investigates Sujiwo Tejo's literary works Republik #Jancukers and Tuhan Maha Asyik through the lens of social-religious commentary, utilizing Gadamer's hermeneutics as the analytical framework. These works are examined for their implicit messages regarding socio-religious concepts, reflecting the author's broader intention to contribute to sociological understanding through literature. Employing a qualitative research methodology with a hermeneutic approach, this library-based research focuses on the integration of social and religious thought within the texts. The analysis applies Gadamer's concepts of historical context and fusion of horizons to explore the depiction of religious social interactions, categorizing them into vertical (individual or group interactions with the divine) and horizontal (interactions among believers). The findings reveal that Tejo's works intricately weave socio-religious themes into their narrative fabric, offering a nuanced exploration of religious interactions. Through Republik #Jancukers and Tuhan Maha Asyik, Tejo presents a multifaceted view of vertical interactions, where individual and collective engagements with the divine are depicted as dynamic and often critical. In contrast, horizontal interactions are portrayed as reflective of the complexities and tensions within religious communities.

Abstract

This study explores the dynamics of tolerance within interfaith families, focusing on how these families navigate religious differences and their impact on household harmony and the religious upbringing of their children. Conducted in Jorong Taratak Baru, Solok Selatan, West Sumatra, this research employs a qualitative methodology, utilizing fieldwork through observations, in-depth interviews, and document analysis. Primary data were collected directly from interfaith families in the area, while secondary sources, including scholarly articles, theses, and books on tolerance, provided contextual insights. The research aims to understand how tolerance is cultivated and sustained within interfaith households. Findings reveal that despite societal perceptions of interfaith marriages as fraught with challenges, these families demonstrate remarkable resilience and adaptability. They establish harmonious domestic environments, comparable to those of single-faith households, by fostering mutual respect and embracing diversity. The study highlights that the success of interfaith households hinges on the families’ conscious efforts to nurture tolerance, ensuring that differences are not perceived as barriers but as opportunities for mutual enrichment. This research contributes to the broader discourse on interfaith relations, emphasizing the potential of tolerance to bridge divides in increasingly pluralistic societies. By showcasing how interfaith families thrive despite challenges, this study underscores the importance of fostering understanding and acceptance in multicultural contexts.

Abstract

This study explores Farid Esack’s hermeneutical approach to the contextualization of religious texts and its relevance in addressing social inequality. The research aims to analyze how Esack’s interpretive framework integrates liberation theology with Qur’anic exegesis to construct a socially engaged understanding of Islam. By adopting a qualitative library research design combined with conceptual analysis, this study examines Esack’s core principles, including his emphasis on historical consciousness, ethical responsibility, and the progressive nature of revelation. The analysis identifies three main components of Esack’s hermeneutics: the prioritization of marginalized voices in interpretation, the call for theological discourse to transcend metaphysical speculation and engage with concrete socio-political realities, and the insistence on praxis as an inseparable dimension of faith. The findings indicate that Esack advocates a liberationist reading of scripture, positioning theology as a normative framework for ethical action and structural transformation within pluralistic societies. These insights underscore the potential of Esack’s hermeneutics as a critical response to contemporary issues of justice and inequality. This study contributes to the broader discourse on Islamic hermeneutics, social ethics, and liberation theology by offering a conceptual model that bridges scriptural interpretation with commitments to social justice and human dignity.

Abstract

This article examines the concept of the Islamic Left in Hassan Hanafi’s thought and its relevance to the liberation of oppressed societies. Hanafi introduces the Islamic Left as a transformative intellectual framework aimed at addressing the multifaceted crises—political, economic, and social—faced by marginalized societies. He envisions this paradigm as a critical tool for dismantling systemic oppression and fostering societal emancipation. Using a critical literature review of Hanafi’s major works, this study examines the core tenets of the Islamic Left and assesses its applicability in contemporary contexts. Hanafi’s approach emphasizes liberation as a central goal of prophetic religious teachings, aligning social justice with the ethical and spiritual imperatives of Islam. His critique of societal structures highlights the need to challenge economic exploitation, political subjugation, and cultural hegemony. Furthermore, his vision advocates a significant paradigm shift in Islamic thought, urging a move from a theocentric worldview—centered on divine transcendence—to an anthropocentric perspective, which places human agency and dignity at the forefront of social and civilizational struggles. This article contributes to the broader discourse on religion and social justice by demonstrating the relevance of Hanafi’s Islamic Left in contemporary efforts to combat inequality and foster progressive social change. It highlights the enduring significance of liberation theology within modern Islamic intellectual traditions.

Abstract

This article examines Wahhabism as an Islamic ideological movement that developed from a local religious renewal movement in Najd into a global geopolitical force through the support of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The purpose of the study is to explore the impact of the spread of Wahhabism on the dynamics of politics, society, and foreign policy in various countries, especially in the context of bilateral relations between Saudi Arabia and the countries that are the targets of the spread of the ideology. The study uses a qualitative approach with a literature study method through analysis of primary and secondary sources, including books, journal articles, and policy reports related to Wahhabism and Islamic geopolitics. The results of the study show that the spread of Wahhabism is supported by Saudi Arabia's economic power through oil diplomacy and funding of transnational religious institutions. The main findings reveal that Wahhabism has created complex dynamics in countries, including the emergence of Islamic conservation groups, tensions with moderate local Islamic traditions, and challenges to socio-political integration. Although Saudi Arabia is trying to reform the image of Wahhabism under vision 2030, this ideology remains an important instrument in Saudi foreign policy and shapes the global Islamic geopolitical landscape.
