Abstract

This study examines the theological thought of Jamaluddin Al-Afghani, focusing on its relevance to contemporary global challenges and sustainable development. Al-Afghani emphasized liberation, independence, and the active role of theology in societal progress, framing it as a solution-oriented discipline beyond mere ritual. Contextualized within the complexities of the modern era, particularly the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), this research employs library research with a descriptive-analytical method and a philosophical-critical approach. Data sources include academic journals, theses, and scholarly works related to theology and Al-Afghani’s contributions. The findings reveal that Al-Afghani’s theological thought extends beyond ritualistic dimensions, offering practical solutions that inspire human agency, scientific advancement, and social justice. His ideas are universally applicable, promoting efforts to empower the marginalized and encourage the pursuit of knowledge for the betterment of society. The study contributes to academic discourse by demonstrating the relevance of Al-Afghani’s thought as a critical framework for addressing contemporary challenges, enriching the intersection of theology and sustainable development in both Muslim and global contexts.

Abstract

This study examines the implications of the supremacy of revelation over reason in the development of Islamic philosophical thought, with a specific focus on Al-Ghazali’s Tahafut al-Falasifah. It seeks to address three key questions: (1) How does Al-Ghazali conceptualize the relationship between reason and revelation in the acquisition of knowledge? (2) What socio-cultural, political, and intellectual factors influenced Al-Ghazali’s critique of rationalist philosophy and his prioritization of revelation? (3) What are the broader implications of his thought for the evolution of Islamic theology and philosophy after the publication of Tahafut al-Falasifah? Using a descriptive-analytical approach, this study explores Al-Ghazali’s arguments within the context of broader Islamic philosophical debates, emphasizing his assertion of revelation as the ultimate epistemological authority. The findings indicate that Al-Ghazali viewed divine revelation as the most reliable and authoritative foundation for knowledge, challenging the dominance of Peripatetic Islamic philosophy, which heavily relied on Greek rationalist traditions. His critique was shaped by the socio-political milieu of his time, marked by the increasing popularity of rationalist philosophy and its perceived threat to Sunni orthodoxy. The study concludes that Al-Ghazali’s prioritization of revelation resulted in a gradual decline in critical reasoning and fostered greater skepticism toward foreign ideas within Islamic intellectual traditions. These developments significantly shaped theological and philosophical trajectories in the post-Tahafut era, highlighting the enduring impact of Al-Ghazali’s thought on Islamic intellectual history.

Abstract

The rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) has sparked questions about the limits and potential of AI in mimicking human cognitive abilities. This research aims to bridge the concept of nafs (soul) in Al-Ghazali’s thought with the development of modern AI. This research uses a comparative method with a qualitative approach. Data were analyzed using content analysis techniques to identify similarities and differences between the concept of nafs nathiqah (reason) according to Al-Ghazali and AI. The focus of the analysis includes the potential, limitations, and ethical implications of the two concepts. Al-Ghazali emphasized the importance of reason in acquiring knowledge and developing technology. However, Al-Ghazali also realized the limitations of human reason, namely its inability to fully understand the nature of reality. AI, although capable of mimicking some aspects of the nafs nathiqah, still has fundamental differences. AI operates based on algorithms and data, while nafs nathiqah involves consciousness, intuition, and the ability to understand meaning. AI has great potential to improve the quality of human life, but it needs to be developed and used ethically and responsibly. Al-Ghazali’s thoughts on nafs can provide insights in understanding the potential and limitations of AI, as well as the ethical implications of its use.

Abstract

Judicial independence is a foundational principle in ensuring the rule of law and public trust in the judiciary. In Indonesia, this principle faces serious challenges due to recurrent judicial corruption, as revealed by multiple bribery sting operations involving judges. This article examines the concept of judicial sequestration—the isolation of judges from external influences during adjudication—as a potential safeguard for judicial impartiality. Drawing upon Al-Ghazali’s ethical framework, the study argues that effective judicial reform must integrate moral virtues such as piety, independence, and resistance to political and personal pressures. The analysis employs a normative-legal and comparative approach, juxtaposing Al-Ghazali’s judicial ethics with sequestration practices in common law systems. The findings suggest that embedding Islamic ethical values within institutional reform frameworks can enhance judicial integrity and accountability. In particular, a culturally contextualized model of judicial sequestration may serve as a viable mechanism for strengthening judicial independence in Indonesia. This study contributes to ongoing discourse on legal reform by offering a synthesis of classical Islamic thought and modern judicial ethics.

Abstract

This article investigates the ideological, identity-based, and geopolitical dynamics of the Salafist movement in Indonesia. Employing qualitative methods through an extensive literature review, the study utilizes Social Identity Theory as its primary analytical framework to examine how Salafi groups construct a distinct collective identity by asserting symbolic and doctrinal boundaries. To complement this framework, the concept of post-Islamism is interpretively applied to capture emerging tendencies within Indonesian Salafism that reveal greater flexibility, pragmatism, and selective engagement with democratic institutions. Findings indicate that while Salafi actors remain committed to doctrinal puritanism, they are simultaneously negotiating their presence in the broader Indonesian Islamic landscape through targeted digital da‘wah strategies and community integration efforts. Internal fragmentation and external socio-political pressures contribute to the development of more contextualized and fluid expressions of Salafism. Rather than a monolithic or static movement, Salafism in Indonesia constitutes a complex, evolving identity shaped by interactions among theology, digital media, state-religion relations, and global ideological currents.

Abstract

This study explores the Qur’anic foundations of moral standards by examining the relationship between belief (ʿaqīdah) and morality as reflected in selected Qur’anic verses. Employing a thematic interpretation (tafsīr maudhū‘ī) through a descriptive-analytical method and inductive reasoning (istiqrā’), this research investigates how ethical conduct is shaped within the Qur'anic worldview. The key finding highlights that, according to the Qur’an, morality is inherently practical and action-oriented. It emphasizes the necessity of righteous deeds as a pathway to human nobility and true happiness. Moral obligations, in this context, are not abstract theories open to speculation, but imperatives that demand immediate implementation. The Qur’an positions revelation—not reason or custom—as the ultimate source of moral authority. Furthermore, the Qur’anic standard of ethical belief is deeply rooted in core theological principles such as tawḥīd (divine oneness), trust in God, sincere intention, and love, which collectively guide the moral conscience of a believer.

Abstract

This study investigates the relationship between God, nature, and humanity through the landscape of Lubuk Hitam Waterfall in Padang, West Sumatra, using Seyyed Hossein Nasr’s eco-philosophy. Historically, the waterfall was regarded as a sacred manifestation of God in nature, fostering a deep spiritual awareness of ecological balance within the local community. Over time, however, its meaning shifted from a sacred entity to a commercial object, reflecting an anthropocentric orientation and leading to environmental degradation. This research employs a qualitative-descriptive method with a philosophical-phenomenological approach to analyze this transformation. The findings reveal that the ecological crisis surrounding the waterfall mirrors a broader spiritual crisis among the community, particularly those managing the site. Restoring the disrupted relationship between God, nature, and humanity requires spiritual education that emphasizes nature as a manifestation of the Divine. Such an approach not only fosters ecological awareness but also encourages the protection and preservation of natural sites from exploitation.

Abstract

This study aims to examine ethical challenges posed by social media practices in the post-truth era through an integrative analysis of Ibn Miskawaih’s virtue ethics and Mohammed Arkoun’s critical Islamic thought. The post-truth condition—marked by the primacy of emotions, personal beliefs, and algorithmic mediation over objective facts—has significantly undermined the authority of truth in digital communication. Phenomena such as ideological echo chambers, disinformation, and uncritical content circulation necessitate a robust ethical framework that extends beyond technical digital literacy. Employing qualitative library research with a philosophical approach, this study conducts conceptual and comparative analyses of Ibn Miskawaih’s Tahdhīb al-Akhlāq and Arkoun’s key writings, supported by contemporary literature on post-truth discourse and digital ethics. The findings reveal that Ibn Miskawaih’s emphasis on moral equilibrium, justice, truthfulness, self-discipline, and wisdom provides a virtue-based foundation for ethical digital behavior. Complementarily, Arkoun’s advocacy of critical reason, epistemic openness, pluralism, and resistance to ideological closure offers essential tools for confronting misinformation and extremism in digital spaces. This study argues that synthesizing these two intellectual traditions yields an ethical model that reinforces critical digital literacy, fosters responsible social media engagement, and contributes to the cultivation of a morally grounded public sphere in the post-truth era.

Abstract

This study explores the relevance of Al-Farabi’s political ethics in the practice of democracy in Indonesia, with a specific focus on regional elections as a manifestation of people’s sovereignty. Indonesia, as a democratic republic, grants its citizens the right to directly elect their leaders, reflecting the principles of political participation. However, in practice, regional elections are often marred by various problems such as money politics, negative campaigning, vote manipulation, and the rise of identity politics, which contradict the ideals of political ethics. Using a qualitative library research method with a philosophical approach, this study examines Al-Farabi’s ideas on political ethics and their application to contemporary democratic practices. The findings reveal that, first, Al-Farabi emphasizes that the foundation of political ethics lies in the ultimate goal of human life, namely happiness; second, political ethics serve as a means to achieve collective happiness as well as a moral compass for leadership; and third, the application of political ethics in Indonesia’s regional elections remains incomplete due to persistent ethical violations. This research underscores the importance of revisiting classical political thought as a normative framework for strengthening democracy and promoting ethical leadership in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study examines the epistemic resilience of the Islamic tafsīr tradition in responding to the philological and historical critiques advanced by the Corpus Coranicum project of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities. By situating the Qur’an within the religious and literary context of Late Antiquity, Corpus Coranicum has significantly influenced contemporary Qur’anic studies while generating epistemological tensions with traditional Islamic scholarship. These tensions arise from differing conceptions of the Qur’an: Western philology treats it as a historical text subject to linguistic analysis, whereas tafsīr understands it as kalām Allāh, the eternal Word of God. Employing qualitative library-based research, this article analyzes selected classical and modern exegetical works through the frameworks of Jan Assmann’s cultural memory and Talal Asad’s discursive tradition. The findings demonstrate that tafsīr is not a static or defensive tradition, but one capable of adaptation, negotiation, and renewal. Three modes of epistemic response are identified—conservative, integrative, and critical-progressive—each reflecting different strategies of engagement with modern scholarship. The study concludes that such epistemic resilience allows tafsīr to maintain theological integrity while constructively engaging contemporary philological approaches, contributing to a paradigm of epistemic coexistence in Qur’anic studies.
