Abstract

Anemia among adolescent girls remains a major public health problem in Indonesia, with a prevalence of more than 30%. This condition affects learning concentration, productivity, and reproductive health in the future. Orphanages represent one of the vulnerable environments since adolescent girls are at risk of inadequate nutritional intake. This community service activity aimed to improve knowledge of adolescent girls regarding anemia prevention and reproductive health, and to obtain an overview of anemia status through hemoglobin (Hb) examination. The methods included a pre-test, interactive counseling and discussion, Hb measurement, and a post-test involving 35 adolescent girls at Muhammadiyah Girls’ Orphanage in Martapura. The results showed an increase in knowledge scores from an average of 46% at pre-test to 79% at post-test. Hb examination revealed that 62.9% of participants had normal Hb levels, while 37.1% were anemic, ranging from mild to moderate. This activity proved effective in increasing participants’ knowledge and provided objective data on their health condition. These findings highlight the importance of continuous educational programs and regular health monitoring for adolescent girls, especially in orphanage settings, to reduce anemia prevalence and support reproductive health.

Abstract

Community service on postpartum mother assistance using Oketani and oxytocin massage techniques was carried out in Awang Bangkal Barat Village, Karang Intan 2 Public Health Center area, Banjar Regency. This activity was based on the limited knowledge of postpartum mothers regarding massage techniques that can increase breast milk production, whereas the success of exclusive breastfeeding is crucial for infant growth and the prevention of stunting. The program was conducted through counseling, discussions, Q&A sessions, and massage practice facilitated by lecturers, midwifery students, and midwives from the public health center. Knowledge evaluation was performed using pre-test and post-test assessments. The results showed a significant increase in knowledge: the “good” category improved from 40% to 80%, while the “poor” category decreased from 30% to 0%. Beyond improved knowledge, Oketani and oxytocin massage techniques were proven effective in supporting smooth breast milk production through neuroendocrine mechanisms and improved breast tissue function. These findings emphasize that education and assistance with massage techniques for postpartum mothers serve as simple, safe, and beneficial non-pharmacological interventions to support breastfeeding success. Thus, this activity contributes to reducing the risk of exclusive breastfeeding failure and plays an important role in stunting prevention in the local community.

Abstract

Children with intellectual disabilities are often subjected to violence because their intellectual limitations prevent them from realizing that they have undergone physical changes, so they do not mind when other people touch them. The results of a needs assessment conducted by Rutgers WPF Indonesia together with the Directorate of PKLK Development of the Ministry of Education and Culture in 2017 in three provinces in Indonesia showed that adolescents with intellectual disabilities have low knowledge about the concepts of women and men, puberty, pregnancy, healthy relationships, and protection from sexual violence. Sexual violence against persons with disabilities is a serious problem in Indonesia, including in Banjar Regency. The purpose of this community service is to provide an understanding of reproductive health using magnetic crossword puzzle boards and Flip Chat at SLB N 2 Martapura. With increased knowledge and understanding, children with disabilities can identify actions that should not be done to them by others. The results of this community service program indicate that improving reproductive education for children with intellectual disabilities through the pre-test and post-test method is effective in enhancing their knowledge. The pre-test results showed that only 4 respondents (13%) had good knowledge, while in the post-test, this number increased to 20 respondents (67%). This improvement helps the children understand how to behave and act assertively to protect themselves, as well as encourages them to seek help immediately if they encounter any indication of a crime directed at them.
