Abstract

Disaster-prone areas face major challenges in maternal and neonatal emergency care, particularly when referral access, electricity, communication, and health facilities are disrupted. Village midwives, as frontline health workers, need adequate capacity to recognize, stabilize, and refer maternal and neonatal emergency cases promptly. This community service activity aimed to improve the knowledge, attitudes, and skills of village midwives in managing maternal and neonatal emergencies in disaster-prone areas. The method was conducted through a hybrid disaster preparedness training module consisting of education, learning videos, waterproof portable handbooks, standard operating procedure posters, field simulations, and strengthening of referral communication networks. Evaluation was carried out using pre-tests, post-tests, skill observation, and emergency response time recording during simulations. The results showed an increase in midwives’ knowledge from 42.5% to 79.3% with p<0.001. Proactive attitude scores increased from 3.0 to 4.5, while practical skills reached 88% success. Strengthening the WhatsApp-based referral network reduced simulation response time by up to 52%. Hybrid disaster preparedness training modules were proven effective in improving village midwives’ capacity and strengthening maternal-neonatal service preparedness in disaster-prone areas.

Abstract

Indonesia is a disaster-prone country due to its location within the Pacific Ring of Fire. This condition requires communities, including school-age children, to have basic preparedness and first aid skills in emergency situations. Elementary school students need to be equipped with knowledge and practical skills in first aid to provide initial assistance before professional help arrives. This community service program aimed to improve the knowledge, preparedness, and practical skills of students at SDN 1 Sawotratap, Gedangan District, Sidoarjo Regency, in integrated disaster management with a focus on first aid. The program was conducted through needs analysis, partner coordination, interactive education, demonstration, integrated disaster simulation, skill observation, and evaluation using pre-test and post-test methods. The results showed an improvement in students’ knowledge of first aid and disaster evacuation procedures. After the intervention, the average knowledge score increased by 80% regarding the recognition of basic medical equipment, wound dressing techniques, and self-evacuation procedures. Students were also able to practice basic first aid techniques through simulation and showed calmer responses when facing disaster scenarios. This program also produced a draft pocket guide on disaster first aid as a sustainable educational medium for the school. Integrated disaster management simulation focusing on first aid is an effective practical education strategy to improve elementary school students’ preparedness. This activity is expected to serve as a school-based empowerment model in developing young generations who are disaster-aware and capable of acting as first responders in school and family environments.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a non-communicable disease whose prevalence is rising among older adults and requires long-term management through pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches. Limited health literacy, suboptimal adoption of healthy behaviors, and the limited capacity of community health volunteers (kader) in chronic-disease assistance were the main problems faced by Yasadharma Elderly Integrated Health Post (Posyandu Lansia), RW 18 Rinjani Mojosongo, Surakarta. This community service program aimed to improve older adults' knowledge, skills, and self-management of diabetes mellitus through health education and acupressure training as a complementary therapy. The program was conducted from 7 to 23 October 2025, involving 49 older adults through educational and participatory approaches consisting of interactive lectures, discussions, demonstrations, hands-on practice, and mentoring by cadres. Evaluation was carried out qualitatively and descriptively through observation, brief interviews, and participant reflection. The results indicated improved participant understanding of diabetes mellitus and healthy lifestyles, along with the ability to independently perform acupressure at ST36 (Zusanli) and SP6 (Sanyinjiao). Cadres also showed enhanced mentoring competence. Evaluation was descriptive, without clinical measurement or statistical testing. The program has the potential to support community-based diabetes management by strengthening the promotive and preventive role of elderly health posts.

Abstract

Regular monitoring of under-five growth and development is essential for early identification of growth faltering, developmental delay, and nutritional problems. Families are the primary observers of children’s daily changes; however, the use of the Maternal and Child Health Handbook, growth charts, and age-appropriate stimulation is not always consistent. This community service activity aimed to strengthen family capacity to monitor the growth and development of children under five in Penfui Timur Village. A participatory empowerment approach was applied through coordination with community health volunteers, interactive education, demonstrations on interpreting growth charts, exercises to identify age-specific developmental milestones, case discussions, and preparation of family follow-up plans. Evaluation was conducted descriptively using attendance records, pre- and post-activity questions, practice observation checklists, and participant reflection. The activity was carried out in March 2026, involved families of children under five and volunteers from Posyandu in Penfui Timur. Participants actively engaged in the sessions, improved their understanding of growth parameters, became more capable of recognizing warning signs, and expressed readiness to conduct regular recording and monitoring at home and at Posyandu. Practice-based family empowerment may strengthen early detection and continuity of child growth and development monitoring.

Abstract

A community service initiative addressing hypertension among adults and the elderly in Gumulan Village was conducted to enhance knowledge and provide acupressure training as a non-pharmacological intervention. Hypertension is a highly relevant public health issue for this initiative in Gumulan Village, Klaten, due to its high disease burden, frequent lack of awareness, and poor control—particularly among more vulnerable socioeconomic groups. The activities included health education, basic health screenings, and acupressure training for hypertension management. Results showed that 80 participants underwent health screenings; the findings revealed a mean systolic blood pressure of 137.26 ± 18.69 mmHg and a mean diastolic blood pressure of 83.00 ± 11.38 mmHg. Mean levels for total cholesterol, uric acid, and blood glucose were 215.85 ± 37.37 mg/dL, 5.98 ± 1.60 mg/dL, and 136.01 ± 51.51 mg/dL, respectively. This initiative increased residents' knowledge and provided safe complementary care. The program was deemed beneficial, and its continuation is recommended.

Abstract

Low health literacy, stigma surrounding HIV/AIDS, and limited access to accurate information often lead adolescents to hold misconceptions regarding HIV transmission and prevention. The service area of the Abepantai Community Health Center (Puskesmas), which includes Biak Village, has a significant adolescent population. As members of the productive age group, adolescents in Biak Village require comprehensive HIV education to understand transmission routes, risk factors, prevention strategies, and the importance of avoiding stigma against People Living with HIV (PLHIV), as well as to become aware of available health services. Evaluations using knowledge questionnaires showed an increase in knowledge scores following the educational sessions; for instance, the average pre-test score rose from 68.5 to 88.7 in the post-test, representing an average increase of 20.2 points. The most significant improvements were observed in the understanding of correct HIV transmission routes and prevention methods, as well as the realization that HIV is not transmitted through social contact such as handshaking, sharing food, or hugging. It is hoped that participants will apply the knowledge gained in their daily lives, avoid high-risk behaviors, and act as agents of change by sharing accurate information about HIV prevention with their peers.

Abstract

Schools are strategic settings for cultivating disaster awareness from an early age, yet school communities often lack adequate knowledge, evacuation skills, and coordination mechanisms. This community service program aimed to strengthen disaster preparedness at SDN 1 Punggul, Sidoarjo, through education, demonstration, simulation, and institutional reinforcement. The program was conducted from 11 March to 2 May 2025 using a participatory approach that included partner coordination, development of communication and educational media, interactive counseling, drop-cover-evacuate practice, basic first aid, drills using evacuation routes and assembly points, and establishment of a School Disaster Preparedness Team. Evaluation used quizzes or question-and-answer sessions, drill observation, and participant feedback. The activities improved understanding of hazards and early warnings, supported more orderly evacuation skills, produced better coordinated collective responses, increased familiarity with emergency facilities, and generated educational media and a clearer division of preparedness roles. This school-based program can support sustained preparedness habits when reinforced through periodic drills and standardized evaluation.
