Abstract

‘Islamic moderation’ has received a great deal of academic and media attention both in the West and in the East. Yet, the denotation of the very term still remains abundantly paradoxical as different regions and contexts provide different sheds of meanings. In the western scholarship, Islamic moderation is concerned with liberal social norms, hermeneutics, political pluralism, democratic process, organizational affinities, and views of state legitimacy over the monopoly of violence, some kind of adaptation, willingness to cooperate or compromise. However, it is by no means exhaustive as its definition in Islamic scholarship provides some unlike constituents. To define moderation, Muslim scholars, firstly explores to lexical meanings of its Arabic substitute “wasatiyyah”. Secondly, they explore the textual meanings of the word “wasatiyyah” used in the orthodox text i.e the Quran and traditions (Sunnah) of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). According to them, moderation is a best suited, justly balanced or middle position between two extremes i.e. extremism and laxity. Their use of the term, is contextualized in terms of counter-extremism, modest socio-religious behaviour and temperate legal position. This research finds out a considerable textual and contextual difference in the use of the term ‘Islamic moderation’ between the East and the West. Hence, this study aims to explore the lack of integration between both scholarships in this issue.

Abstract

As the most beautiful gift as well as the mandate of Allah SWT. as well as considering the child's position in family, community and state life, children must get the best protection in their development process, including through granting children's rights to a living. Several laws and regulations in Indonesia define a living as meeting the material needs of children. Such a definition raises various problems in the pattern of child protection and the formation of the benefit of families in Indonesia. This study aims to describe the redefinition of livelihoods in child protection efforts and the formation of the benefit of families in Indonesia. This research method uses normative legal research with a philosophical and statutory approach and uses a prescriptive analytic method. The results show that in the pattern of child protection and the formation of family welfare in Indonesia, children's livelihoods must be defined as meeting children's material needs so that children can survive and as fulfilling children's immaterial needs so that children can improve their quality of life.

This study explores the extensive roles and contributions of Ulama (Islamic scholars) in the Malay Archipelago, with a focus on their impact in the fields of Islamic economics, sciences, and mathematics. The research aims to illuminate how Ulama have shaped various aspects of Islamic culture, education, and intellectual thought in the region. A comprehensive literature review was conducted, examining historical texts, manuscripts, and scholarly works related to the Ulama. The study employed qualitative analytical approaches to assess the contributions of Ulama in the Malay Archipelago. Findings indicate that Ulama significantly influenced Islamic economics by aligning economic practices with Sharia principles, emphasizing justice and ethical compliance. In scientific and mathematical fields, Ulama integrated complex mathematical concepts with Islamic teachings, contributing to the advancement of these disciplines. The educational impact of Ulama, particularly through the pondok system, promoted self-reliance and entrepreneurship, while their cultural synthesis effectively combined Islamic knowledge with local traditions. The Ulama’s roles extended beyond religious instruction, encompassing broader societal, economic, and intellectual domains. Their contributions not only facilitated the spread of Islam but also respected and preserved local customs. The study underscores the Ulama’s enduring influence in shaping the educational and intellectual landscape of the Malay Archipelago.

Abstract

This paper tries to discuss about Market, Market Mechanism and Price Levels in Islamic Microeconomics Perspective. In contrast to the conventional economy which frees the formation of price levels only on the market mechanism, determining the price level through market mechanisms in Islamic economics is based on the principles of justice in order to achieve mutual benefit (al-Mashlahah). Therefore, when inequality is detrimental to one party in a market, the role of the government in creating justice for both parties is a solution that is legitimate. This in microeconomic terminology is known as market intervention, which is carried out by the government as a step to stabilize the price level so that it does not harm one party in the market. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze the market and price levels in Islamic microeconomics with a philosophical approach. The methodology used in this study used qualitative research based on literature study. The result showed that there were some fundamental things that distinguished Islamic microeconomics from conventional in determining the price level in the Islamic market mechanism.

Abstract

This research aims to comprehensively explore the following aspects: (1) the conceptual frameworks employed by Persis scholars in their understanding of polygamy from the perspective of Persis women; (2) the subjective interpretations and meanings of polygamy among Persis women; and (3) the empirical realities and experiences of religious practice among Persis women regarding polygamy. The study adopts a qualitative research approach, utilizing socio-phenomenological methods, specifically drawing upon symbolic interactionism theory and social construction theory within the Bergerian sociology of knowledge, as the analytical framework. The research findings reveal significant variations in the perspectives of Persis scholars regarding the doctrine of polygamy. These divergences can be attributed to differences in educational backgrounds among Persis scholars (asatidz). Central to the debates are interpretations of justice within the context of polygamy, the criteria for engaging in polygamous marriages, the understanding of the permissible number of wives, and the interpretations of scriptural verses related to polygamy, whether regarded as mutasyabihat (ambiguous) or muhkamat (clear). In terms of the understanding of polygamy among Persis women, socio-cultural factors play a significant role, resulting in a context where Persis women in Garut perceive themselves as equal to men. Consequently, they assert their personal rejection of polygamy, while simultaneously recognizing its permissibility within the framework of Islamic teachings. In practice, instances of polygamous marriages among Persis women are rare, primarily due to the perception that the requirements for polygamy are nearly unattainable (suprahumanization of polygamy
