Abstract

Coastal pollution is an escalating environmental issue driven by human activities, improper waste disposal practices, and the lack of public awareness regarding the importance of preserving coastal ecosystems. This community service activity was implemented as a mitigation effort against coastal pollution through direct action and environmental education approaches. The purpose of this program was to reduce the pollution load at Soiya Beach, enhance community awareness, and promote behavioral change through coordinated beach-cleaning activities and the installation of informational signage. The activity was conducted on 10 October in commemoration of World Habitat Day. The implementation methods included waste collection, shoreline cleaning, and the installation of prohibition signs and educational notices at strategic locations. The integrated efforts—comprising waterflow clearing, beach cleaning, and the placement of warning and educational boards—demonstrated that a combined preventive and curative approach can generate significant impacts in reducing coastal pollution and improving the environmental quality of Soiya Beach.

Abstract

Global warming is a global environmental issue that has a significant impact on archipelagic regions, especially small islands that are vulnerable to sea level rise, coastal erosion, and coastal ecosystem damage. Low environmental literacy among school-age children presents a challenge in building awareness of climate change from an early age. This Community Service activity aims to increase the knowledge and awareness of students at Ur Christian Elementary School, Southeast Mollucas Regency, regarding the impacts of global warming and mitigation efforts. The methods used included interactive outreach through presentations, discussions, questions and answers, and evaluation using pre- and post-tests for 33 students in grades III to V. The results of the activity showed that students' initial knowledge of global warming was still low, but after the material was presented, their understanding increased, demonstrated by their ability to explain the concept, impacts, and simple mitigation steps. This activity demonstrates that environmental education from an early age is effective in increasing climate literacy and fostering environmentally conscious character as a foundation for strengthening the resilience of island communities to climate change.

Abstract

Latuhalat village has abundant fisheries potential, but its utilization is mostly limited to fresh fish sales and some traditional processing. This leads to low added value and fish spoilage during peak catch seasons. This community service aimed to improve the community's knowledge regarding fishery product processing by applying the Blue Economy concept (zero waste production). The implementation method used was the Participatory Learning Method (PLM) through interactive counseling and focused group discussions with 48 participants, consisting of housewives and fishermen. The results showed high participant enthusiasm and an increased understanding of zero-waste marine product diversification. This activity is expected to encourage the growth of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in fish processing that can absorb labor, increase product sales value, and ultimately improve community welfare sustainably.

Abstract

Mud crab (Scylla spp.) is a high-value fisheries commodity in South Sorong Regency. However, its utilization is still constrained by the use of traditional crab traps that lack selectivity and by the limited knowledge of fishers regarding sustainable fishing practices. This Community Service Program aimed to enhance the capacity of the Sayolo Fishers Group through the implementation of selective crab trap technology. The activities were conducted in May 2026 and involved five fishers using a combination of socialization, training, trap modification practice, mentoring, and evaluation through pre-tests, post-tests, observations, and interviews. The technology introduced consisted of modifying traditional crab traps by incorporating an escape gap and a biodegradable panel. The results demonstrated significant improvements in the fishers' knowledge, skills, and awareness of sustainable mud crab harvesting practices. The participants were able to independently modify their crab traps and gained a better understanding of the importance of harvesting legal-sized crabs and protecting berried female crabs. This technology has the potential to support the sustainability of mud crab resources while improving catch quality and enhancing the livelihoods of coastal communities.

Abstract

Abstract Coral reef ecosystems surrounding the East Seram Marine Protected Area are experiencing increasing degradation due to anthropogenic activities and climate change, while the local community of Waru Village has limited technical capacity to conduct standardized coral reef monitoring. This community service program, based on a citizen science approach, aimed to enhance community knowledge and technical skills in coral reef monitoring using the Point Intercept Transect (PIT) method, while establishing a community-based monitoring team to support the management of the marine protected area. The program was implemented through a participatory approach consisting of awareness-raising sessions, theoretical and practical training, and continuous mentoring. A total of 20 participants attended the training sessions, with 10 participants involved in the field practicum. Program effectiveness was evaluated using pre- and post-tests to assess participants' knowledge and observation-based skill checklists to evaluate technical competencies. The results demonstrated a substantial increase in average knowledge scores from 24.62% to 90.38% (an improvement of 65.76 percentage points). Participants' independent technical skills also improved significantly from 25% to 85% between the first and second mentoring cycles. The consistent improvement in both knowledge and technical competencies indicates that the citizen science approach is effective in strengthening the capacity of local communities to independently and sustainably conduct coral reef monitoring, while supporting more participatory and adaptive management of marine protected areas. Keywords: coral reefs; citizen science; community empowerment; participatory monitoring; marine protected areas. Abstract

Bakasang is a traditional fermented fish product originating from Banda, Maluku, Indonesia, which continues to be produced using traditional methods passed down through generations. Besides serving as a local traditional food, bakasang also has significant potential as a distinctive souvenir product for tourists visiting the Banda Islands. However, the development of bakasang remains constrained by several challenges, including inconsistent product quality, limited implementation of hygiene and sanitation practices during production, and insufficient innovation in packaging and product information, which ultimately affect its competitiveness and market expansion. This community engagement program aimed to improve the quality management, hygiene practices, and packaging innovation of bakasang products through a structured mentoring approach with local producers. The program was implemented through several stages, including production condition assessment, quality control mentoring, hygiene and sanitation education, and packaging development. The results demonstrated an improvement in partners’ understanding of quality control principles, the importance of maintaining cleanliness throughout the production process, and the role of attractive packaging in enhancing product value and consumer appeal. This program is expected to contribute to the development of bakasang as a high-quality, competitive, and sustainable local food product that represents the unique culinary identity of the Banda Islands.
